Director Shawn C. Phillips is back with Desert Fiends, a new indie horror movie that’s packed with familiar faces and bloody carnage candy.
You can watch the official trailer for Desert Fiends below, which runs over 3-minutes long and plays out like a highlight reel of the old school practical effects you can expect in this one.
Fans of Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes will probably want to check this one out, as well as anyone who has an affinity for practical gore effects and wild monster makeups.
In Desert Fiends, “Six friends break down in the middle of nowhere on the way to a concert and encounter a deranged family that lives in the desert killing anyone they come across.”
The impressive cast includes Spencer Breslin, Lorelei Linklater, Eric Roberts, Scout Taylor Compton, Tom Arnold, Michael Pare, Bai Ling, Robert Lasardo, William McNamara, Lisa Wilcox, Eileen Dietz,...

There's ambition and then there's Richard Linklater shooting "Boyhood" with the same core cast from 2002 to 2013.
The "Before" trilogy director's Oscar-winning 2014 drama follows Texan boy Mason Evans Jr. (Ellar Coltrane) as he goes from age six to 18. It's a journey that takes Mason and his family from the highs of camping trips and the midnight release of a new "Harry Potter" book to the lows of having an abusive, alcoholic stepfather and experiencing romantic heartbreak for the first time. Call it "boring" all you want, but Linklater's film makes for a fascinating cinematic time capsule of life in the 2000s. One could even argue it embodies what the legendary film theorist André Bazin was talking about when he asserted that photography "embalms time, rescuing it simply from its proper corruption."
Linklater, in comparison, was perfectly humble when discussing his intentions for the movie during an interview with The Guardian to...

I’m never quite sure with Haunted House attractions movies. The attractions themselves have never really interested me despite being a huge horror fan, so maybe that’s part of the reason. But they also always seem so formulaic, so I am happy to report that Autumn Road at least tries to do things a bit different with the idea.
The disappearance of a young girl effects the local town and in particular two twins who run a, you’ve guessed it, haunted house attraction, and an aspiring actress who soon becomes friends with them. The story isn’t centred on the haunted house attraction and that’s definitely a good thing, as when it does show up properly it’s towards the end of the movie and it feels like something fresh. If...

Being young and just starting out can be a rough time. It’s also prime source material for young filmmakers to tell their stories. One film in particular, the just getting released Anywhere With You, is mining just that territory. Is it old hat, especially in independent cinema? Of course it is. Is it still vertical ground? Very much so. The key is just to either depict it in a unique way or give it some feeling of verisimilitude. This project does a bit of the former, but really does well when it comes to the latter. That sets it it apart and ultimate is what makes it worth seeing and searching out. The film is a look at the first day in the rest of the lives of a young couple in love. Amanda (Morgan Saylor) and Jake (McCaul Lombardi) have backed all their worldly goods and are excited...

"My entire life people tried to rattle my cage, to force me to explode from the inside out." Gravitas Ventures has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled Bomb City, based on a true story of a punk rock hate crime in Amarillo, Texas in 1997. The title Bomb City refers to the name of a rundown venue where a guy known as Brian Deneke hosts punk shows. After losing a football game, high school jocks from a group known as the "white-hatters" start a big street fight with the punks. Dave Davis stars as Brian, and the cast includes Glenn Morshower, Logan Huffman, Lorelei Linklater, Eddie Hassell, Henry Knotts, Maemae Renfrow, Dominic Ryan Gabriel, Luke Shelton, Cody Cates, with Marilyn Manson. This looks like a damn good film, with what seems to be a stellar performance from Dave Davis. Worth a watch. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jameson (Jamie) Brooks' Bomb City,...

"Are you sure you want to do this?" A24 has revealed the first official trailer for a psychological drama starring Kirsten Dunst titled Woodshock. This is the "exquisite feature film debut of visionary fashion designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy" of Rodarte. Kirsten Dunst stars as a woman suffering from a "profound loss", who falls deeper into paranoia after taking a potent drug. The full cast includes Joe Cole, Lorelei Linklater, Steph DuVall, and Pilou Asbæk (from Ghost in the Shell). This looks like much more than a stoner film, with some seriously trippy, experimental visuals. I'm not sure I'm into this, seems more like an art piece that belongs in museums than anything that belongs in cinemas. But I haven't seen it. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Kate & Laura Mulleavy's Woodshock, direct from YouTube: Woodshock is a hypnotic exploration of isolation, paranoia, and grief...

The first trailer has debuted for the upcoming drama Woodshock, the new film from A24, and you can view the beautiful first look in the player below.
Following in the footsteps of fellow fashion icon Tom Ford (A Single Man, Nocturnal Animals) into directing, sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy are heading behind the camera for their debut film. And while the first trailer looks stunning, they have also managed to secure the talents of Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man, Melancholia, The Beguiled) to star in the film, who incidentally is a friend of the duo.
The film sees Dunst play a young woman who’s real and fantasy world begin to blur under the influence of drugs after she suffers a terrible loss. Dunst has been on something of a hot streak in recent years: having been nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the second season of Fargo,...

The first decade and a half of the 21st century has brought a lot of changes to the landscape of film. The advancement and sophistication of computers has made realistic computer generated effects a mainstay in both big-budget and small-budget films. The internet and streaming technologies have given big Hollywood new competition in films produced independently and by non-traditional means. We went from purchasing films on yards of tape to plastic disks, and now we can simply upload them to the cloud. Advertisements for films have reached a higher, more ruthless level where generating hype through trailers and teasers is crucial for a film’s commercial success. At the beginning of (and throughout) every month, Showtime adds new movies and TV shows to its streaming library, available through Showtime Anytime and in partnership with other streaming services like Hulu. For more comprehensive coverage of the best titles available across streaming services, check out Vulture’s Streaming Hub, which is updated throughout the month.I don’t wanna be your hero: Boyhood (2014) Richard Linklater’s latest begins with six-year-old Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and his older sister (Lorelei Linklater) dealing with the separation of their parents (Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke), and expands across 12 years' worth of trauma and love alike, as they all grow up. 'Father of the Bride': Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams. Top Five Father's Day Movies? From giant Gregory Peck to tyrant John Gielgud What would be the Top Five Father's Day movies ever made? Well, there have been countless films about fathers and/or featuring fathers of various sizes, shapes, and inclinations. In terms of quality, these range from the amusing – e.g., the 1950 version of Cheaper by the Dozen; the Oscar-nominated The Grandfather – to the nauseating – e.g., the 1950 version of Father of the Bride; its atrocious sequel, Father's Little Dividend. Although I'm unable to come up with the absolute Top Five Father's Day Movies – or rather, just plain Father Movies – ever made, below are the first five (actually six, including a remake) "quality" patriarch-centered films that come to mind. Now, the fathers portrayed in these films aren't all heroic, loving, and/or saintly paternal figures. Several are...

Last night it was Birdman that took home Best Picture at the 87th Academy Awards. The film from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is certainly deserving of praise and reward, but there's part of me that thinks Boyhood will be the film that stands the test of time a little better. Even though Richard Linklater went home empty-handed last night, he delivered a film that already means a lot to many people. It's a touching story, and a grand achievement in filmmaking. And editor Joel Walden wanted to pay tribute to Linklater and his whole filmography, which includes Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise and more. Watch it! Here's the career retrospective Richard Linklater - The Works by Joel Walden (via The Playlist): Filmed from 2002 to 2013, Boyhood covers 12 years in the life of a family. Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and his older sister, Samantha (Lorelei Linklater), learn to face the realities of growing up,...

Last year I had quite a bit to say about the Oscar show itself. This yearc Eh, not so much. The show wasn't very good in my opinion, but at the same time I don't really blame that on Neil Patrick Harris, most anyone would have suffered with the material he was given. Granted, the overall night made it seem like Harris contributed far less to the show than Ellen DeGeneres did last year, or perhaps he just can't deliver comedy as well as DeGeneres. Many of Harris's jokes fell dreadfully flat. His opening monologue played more like a eulogy to the Oscars and the industry as a whole rather than the comedic roasting it was meant to deliver, and it wasn't only Harris. Jack Black's addition to the opening musical number was not only great, it was spot on. Liam Neeson even continued the trend as he introduced...

The Oscars are only days away, and host Neil Patrick Harris is warming up his pipes, dry-cleaning his tux, and getting ready.
But what about you? Are you ready for the 87th Academy Awards? Have you watched all the Best Director nominees: Birdman, Foxcatcher, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, and Boyhood? If you haven’t, we’ve got the lowdown on everything “Oscar” with this handy breakdown of all the nominees – with bonus interviews!
Best Director Alejandro GONZÁLEZ IÑÁRRITU, Birdman
Colleagues told Alejandro González Iñárritu he was insane to shoot a film composed of super-long takes meant to simulate one continuous shot. Thank goodness the Mexican director didn’t listen and gifted us with his technically audacious, gleefully absurd study of a movie actor (Michael Keaton) desperate to reinvent himself on stage.
Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher
Bennett Miller (Capote, Moneyball) is the consummate actor’s director, drawing amazing performances from his stars.

Believe it or not, we’re only about 72 hours away now away from the Academy Award ceremony folks. Like I said earlier this week, by now we all know that it’s basically a final sprint to the finish between Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman and Richard Linklater’s Boyhood. As such, this week I decided to look at the Oscar cases for and against both films, finishing up today with Boyhood. The movie also has taken a rather unique road to the finish line, so it’s an interesting case that can be made for Linklater’s work, no matter what the outcome on Sunday night is. Come with me once more now as we wrap up this final series and look at what’s working for and against a big Oscar night for Boyhood this weekend. I don’t think any of you are in the dark about...

If you're betting on "Boyhood" to win big at the upcoming Academy Awards, think again! Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" was deemed to be the big Oscar frontrunner but a double-dose of guild awards over the weekend tamed those prospects down. First, the Producers Guild of America gave their top honor to Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," and the Screen Actors Guild followed suit!
"Birdman" took home the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award! But, since the movie is about acting, this award is just fitting.
My biggest surprise, and it'a welcome surprise indeed, was "The Theory of Everything's" Eddie Redmayne taking home the Outstanding Male Actor trophy. Sorry Michael Keaton! I think Redmayne truly gave the Performance of the Year award!
The usual suspects took home the movie acting awards with wins for Julianne Moore for Best Actress in "Still Alice," J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash,...

Well, everyone can't be a red carpet winner! And the 2015 SAG Awards red carpet gave us—unfortunately—more than enough lackluster looks to choose from. Sarah Hyland took to the red carpet in a custom Vera Wang confection that left us a little cold. Why, you ask? While we love the jewel-embellished bodice, the bottom of the gown is where it all went wrong: The tulle overlay isn't flattering, and the fit could be a bit more snug on the Modern Family star's trim figure. Meanwhile, Lorelei Linklater's look was, er, nun-meets-punk gone wrong. The billowing sleeves and bright-blue pony tail did little to help that odd fit of the gown. Lo Bosworth's nude midi wasn't the most flattering...

I'm betting it continues to be a big weekend for Birdman on account of actors playing actors in a movie about acting (not to mention that the ensemble Is truly worthy) but I could be wrong. The temptation to wield your guild's top award as a defacto Best Picture prize -- even though none of the guilds are meant to be awarding that but their own craft instead -- has often proven a strong lure. Boyhood is easier to love so perhaps they'll hand the prize to just four people: Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, Ellar Coltrane and Lorelei Linklater. Otherwise I feel little fear in predicting Keaton, Moore, Arquette and Simmons as the winners. Same as it ever was. That said if Eddie Redmayne is the viable Oscar threat I think he is, things could shift here in Best Actor to put him firmly in first place. After all SAG...

The actress, 20, who had a role in her father, Richard Linklater's buzzy, SAG-nominated film, celebrated Boyhood's big night in a Honor dress with old-school details, including bell sleeves so large they completely obscured her arms from the elbow down! White lace, both on the back of [...]...

Most people grow up with a small amount of their lives being documented. Photos from birthdays and vacations, framed portraits of the family, and holiday camcorder sessions are usually the norm. But, with Ellar Coltrane, anyone willing to pay the price of admission to "Boyhood" can see him grow up in a matter of hours. "It was very emotional," Coltrane remarked at a recent Q&A in New York. "I think everyone wonders how you change from day-to-day much less over the period of a decade or more than a decade. Seeing how I looked at this age and seeing how I looked at this age -- there's something about it moving and talking and to have that kind of put in my face, it was intense." The story follows Mason (Coltrane) over 12 years as he maneuvers his way through childhood and beyond. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as...

Richard Linklater created something unique and memorable with “Boyhood,” fresh off a three-win night at the Golden Globe Sunday. The coming-of-age movie, filmed over a 12-year period took home honors for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette.
Written and directed by Linklater, who lovingly steered his film for more than a decade, “Boyhood” succeeds by keeping its focus on all those everyday little things that make up life.
In TheWrap’s exclusive behind-the-scenes video, Linklater talked about his inspiration for his saga of a young boy growing from six-years old into young adulthood.

The little movie that could took one step closer to the ultimate prize on Sunday night in Beverly Hills, when Richard Linklater‘s “Boyhood” was named the best drama of the year at the 72nd annual Golden Globe Awards.
The victory doesn’t secure the film’s status as an Oscar frontrunner, given the vast difference between the 6,000-plus members of the Academy and the 81 eligible voters of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But it reinforces the adventurous family drama’s status as the 2014 film that is receiving the most across-the-board support heading into the crucial three weeks of awards season,...

On Jan. 5, director Richard Linklater and actors Patricia Arquette, Ellar Coltrane, and Ethan Hawke gathered at the New School in New York City to discuss their 12-year project, “Boyhood.” Moderated by Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News, the SAG Foundation talk touched on several aspects of the film following Mason (Coltrane), his sister (Lorelei Linklater), and his parents (Arquette and Hawke) as they navigate childhood and parenthood in suburban Texas. Technically, “Boyhood” is unlike anything that’s come before. Aside from its 12-year shoot, the actors didn’t rehearse tirelessly, spend countless hours getting into character, or shoot out of sequence. Linklater noted that many people have asked him what he and the actors did to reacquaint themselves with the characters, to which he said, “We never even talked about it. “It was like a friendship where you run into the friend every year and just pick up right where you left off.

Chicago – I remember when Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” was just a rare credit on IMDb, a project listed as “in production” for many years, while the director’s other completed work passed through. The curiosity of Linklater’s unparalleled experiment was certainly fulfilled by its release, which comes full circle today as it hits home video, an award season epilogue in sight.
Filming the development of a boy’s life over the course of twelve years, “Boyhood” uniquely captures the wonder of how a person blossoms from the origins of a simple human being. The life of young non-actor Ellar Coltrane, and the character he plays, vividly expresses the way in which we are influenced by the lives of people around us through the gradual passage of time.
Rating: 4.5/5.0

Boyhood is a blur. That’s intentional. The film is awe-inspiringly massive in scope, and the unceasing motor that drives it forward is forceful enough to flatten. Shot over 12 years, with director Richard Linklater filming scenes with the same young actor (Ellar Coltrane, sublime) for a few weeks annually, capturing a boy named Mason as he transforms from bright-eyed six-year-old into wearier but still hopeful 18-year-old, Boyhood is a singular masterpiece. Technically, it’s an astonishing feat, and narratively, it’s a daring experiment on which only one filmmaker would ever have taken a chance. It’s also a sprawling mess, a film in which scenes smash and splinter into other scenes, like magnificent waves crashing down one after another. Months or years pass in the blink of an eye.
Again, that’s intentional. The inner motor I spoke of earlier is time, constant, inexorable, unavoidable, and the cruel but...

The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
