Harley Quinn is one of the most important characters in Batman’s mythos, a rare occasion where an important character in the mythos of an A-list superhero was created outside of comic books. A creation of Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, Harley Quinn would go on to become one of the most popular characters in the Batman franchise, and headline multiple series of her own, in animation and in comic books.

Over the years, Colin Farrell has starred in many kinds of projects. Range is one of his greatest specialties, as he can go from playing complex emotional characters to action heroes and even The Penguin in The Batman. In 2012, he starred in the reboot of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s classic film, Total Recall. While the film did not do exceptionally well, there was one aspect during filming that made it especially difficult for Farrell.

Colin Farrell reprises his role as The Penguin, and it’s now confirmed that Sky will broadcast the series in the UK.
Spoilers for The Batman lie ahead.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman was among the top ten highest grossing films of 2022, the superhero epic expanding on the darker tone previously established in the Christopher Nolan trilogy while sticking more closely to the comics. One of its most striking performances was a near unrecognisable Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
It wasn’t long before HBO Max began developing a spin-off centering around the character, which will also serve as a bridge between The Batman and the upcoming sequel, which is currently scheduled to begin filming in 2025 for release in 2026.
Little is known about the plot of the series, although Farrell recently called it “incredibly violent“. The story will follow Oswald Copplebolt (aka The Penguin) and his rise to power. Farrell said...

When Colin Farrell was cast as Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, many fans were skeptical as they did not know what to expect from the interpretation. Farrell definitely did not look the part, but the costume design crew did an amazing job and Farrell delivered a brilliant villain who was so good that HBO ordered a standalone spin-off series focusing on The Penguin. The series, which will be titled The Penguin, is set to be released later this year and we have just today received some interesting casting rumors!
Namely, we know that Farrell is reprising his role and that the series will focus on Penguin taking over Gotham’s criminal underworld after the death of Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro in the film) at the hands of the Riddler.

Sometimes, a Bat Signal is a searchlight that sends a signal of hope capable of piercing even Gotham City’s darkest night. Sometimes, it’s a YouTube video on a channel devoted to getting sponsorship from Hot Topic, asking any artists if they’re down to collaborate. Vera Drew opted for the latter.
Her film, “The People’s Joker,” is not only one of the most impressive and subversive stretches of fair use law ever put to film, taking the characters and mythology of the Batman universe (as well as Lorne Michaels) to tell a trans coming-of-age story that DC Comics would never touch on its own. It is also an impressive, successful example of how crowdsourcing can elevate a project and bring out the radical queer politics at its heart.

We all know that The Penguin and Mr. Freeze appeared together at this year’s Oscars ceremony and that they faced their former nemesis, Batman, who challenged them to come at him. Michael Keaton recalls the initial reaction that comic book fans had when he was chosen to portray Batman in the 1989 Tim Burton-directed film.
Until then, Batman had been a character on a campy television series. However, Batman would mark a before and after for the superhero movie genre.
“When they said ‘We’re thinking of doing Batman,’ I said, ‘Wait, you’re thinking of making a movie about Batman?’,” Keaton said in an interview with GQ.
He continued, “The fact that Tim said ‘That guy, I want that guy’… the fact that people cared one way or another so much is still baffling. But that was a ballsy move on his part. We also had a nice working relationship from Beetlejuice, so he felt that he and I could get along and would work well together.”

The Batman was a refreshing change in the turbulent DC Extended Universe. Taking a different approach from earlier DC and Batman movies, this 2022 flick starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayn is essentially a noir-style mystery that highlights the superhero’s detective abilities in addition to his physical prowess.
Not only did it create a bleak new Gotham City, but it also featured some of the best performances from Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), and of course, Pattinson (Batman).
However, the film was met with some skepticism following Christopher Wozniak, a screenwriter and former freelance artist for DC Comics, filing a lawsuit against Warner Bros. for allegedly stealing the story from his script, The Ultimate Riddle.

Colin Farrell as The Penguin was one of the most terrifying characters in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The way he walked, talked, and acted was enough for many to be convinced that he was truly the best Penguin that DC fans had ever seen. While his acting is to be praised, it is truly the makeup that helped him transform into the notorious crime lord.

Yet, some fans expressed why the production would hire Farrell and transform him into somebody unrecognizable instead of hiring a talented actor with similar looks as Oswald Cobblepot. A pretty viable point, but once fans see the BTS video of Farrell’s transformation, they will certainly appreciate not only the actor but also Matt Reeves’s vision.

While The Joker may be the most iconic and memorable comic book antagonist in the world today, the depiction of Oswald Cobblepot in the 2022 masterpiece The Batman by Collin Farrell pushed the character’s popularity to the next level.
Thus, seeing just how revered the character became with his introduction in the film, Warner Bros. decided that he deserved his spin-off series to further explore him.

And thankfully this time, the star was granted his wish to smoke cigars on set and screen for The Penguin, something that the star wasn’t allowed to do when he was working with filmmaker Matt Reeves on the movie since WB had a no-smoking policy in place.
The reason why Farrell wanted to smoke was to bring his character closer to the comic-accurate recreation of Cobblepot, who is always seen with a cigar in his mouth.

The sequel to the 2022 superhero hit “The Batman” may have been pushed to 2026, but fans of Matt Reeves’ take on Gotham City will have “The Penguin” to tide them over later this year.
On Friday, Max released a new trailer for the DC Studios limited series starring Colin Farrell as mobster Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin. Farrell’s Penguin was a supporting character in “The Batman” (and one of its best parts), but he gets center stage here as he tries to grab power in Gotham’s underworld after the death of his boss, Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), in “The Batman.”
With Farrell again unrecognizable under layers of prosthetic makeup, Cobb tells a story about Rex Calabrese, a gangster who ran his neighborhood when he was a kid. Calabrese earned people’s respect by helping them out, and when he died, the neighborhood threw a parade in his honor. “Can you imagine,...

The DC universe is in an exciting place, because of how nebulous the future is. The old universe is dead and gone, but James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe hasn't started yet. We don't know how the new takes on classic characters will go, whether a brand new Batman and Robin will work in live-action, whether Gunn will actually deliver on his big galoot Superman, or whether we'll get more than one project before the entire studio is sold yet again.
Before all that happens, we still have Matt Reeves' "The Batman," which was a huge surprise and one of the best Batman movies ever. We don't know what place this take on the character will have in Gunn's universe, but at least for now, Reeves is not going anywhere. While we wait for "The Batman 2," we have our first look at the first spin-off of Reeves' universe — "The Penguin" TV series.

The Penguin is ready to take the big seat. Colin Farrell is back as The Penguin in the new trailer for his Max series, which spins out of the world of the 2022 DC film The Batman.
In the events of the film, The Penguin served as a lieutenant to crime boss Carmine Falcone, who meets an untimely end. Now, The Penguin is stepping up to lead crime in Gotham City in a series that looks like DC’s answer to The Sopranos.
The series hails from DC Studios, the Warner Bros. division run by James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are plotting out their own shared universe of movies and TV shows. Both The Batman and The Penguin are considered separate from those plans, and take place in their own universe under the Elseworlds banner — a nod to alternate universe stories in the DC Comics.

Though many critics thought another Batman reboot would be overkill, filmmaker Matt Reeves largely silenced early detractors with his moody and atmospheric “The Batman” (2022), which starred Robert Pattinson. As we eagerly await “The Batman—Part II,” Reeves will flesh out his vision for Gotham City with “The Batman” spinoff series “The Penguin.” Focusing on the crime villain Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin (played by Colin Farrell), the series is set in the aftermath of a power vacuum in the crime-ridden megalopolis of Gotham created by the death of crime boss Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro in Reeves’ first film).

Michael Keaton is regarded as one of the finest actors in the entertainment industry who gained worldwide recognition when he starred as Bruce Wayne a.k.a., Batman in 1989’s Batman and later 1992’s Batman Returns. Directed by Tim Burton, the DC superhero movie was only given a green signal after Burton’s 1988 Beetlejuice was a success.
Keaton’s casting was considered a controversy at the time since the actor had been pigeonholed as a comic actor and fans along with critics weren’t sure if he could portray a serious character like Batman. The actor’s performance was highly lauded by the audience and the critics after the movie was released. The actor recently reprised the character for 2023’s The Flash and was later asked about the future of his Batman in Dcu.

Danny DeVito’s portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot / The Penguin in the 1992 film ‘Batman Returns’ is considered one of his most memorable performances. He underwent a significant physical transformation for the role and demonstrated a strong commitment to the character. DeVito brought both menace and humor to the character, earning him critical acclaim and recognition as one of the standout performances in the movie. Alongside Michael Keaton, who reprised his role as Batman in the 2023 film ‘The Flash,’ DeVito’s performance stood out.
Despite ‘Batman Returns’ being a commercial and critical disappointment, Keaton’s return to the role received widespread praise, sparking speculation about DeVito potentially reprising his role as well, this time within the DC Extended Universe (Dceu). In an interview with Screenrant, DeVito expressed his willingness to return to the role under one condition: if Tim Burton were to direct the film.

Danny DeVito’s portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot / The Penguin in 1992 ‘Batman Returns’ is definitely one of his most iconic roles. He went through a major physical transformation to play it as well as showed remarkable dedication to the character. He was menacing but also managed to convey as certain dose of humor through the role. It earned him critical acclaim and is often cited as one of the best performances in the movie. Michael Keaton is sharing how his Batman appearance at the Oscars 2024 came to be.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the actor-director explained that either Jimmy Kimmel or Oscars producer Molly McNearney reached out to him about the bit ahead of the awards show, and he thought it would be fun.
The bit saw Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito take the stage on Sunday night to present the award for best visual effects, which went to Godzilla: Minus One. But apparently, they weren’t reuniting as Twins co-stars but as Batman villains, with Keaton’s Dark Knight in the audience. (Schwarzenegger portrayed Mr. Frieze in Batman & Robin, which starred George Clooney’s Batman, and DeVito took on the role of The Penguin in Batman Returns.)
When Kimmel asked about his menacing look at the men onstage, Keaton joked that he could take on both of their villains any time.

Touring the riot scene, gravely assessing the devastation, patiently awaiting to play Oswald Cobblepot again. That’s the word from Danny DeVito, who says that if he can get Tim Burton on board, he would absolutely play The Penguin once more.

I had a good time. It’s operatic. I like every once in a while going big, and so I’d do that in a second. We had a ball doing that.” And we’d have a ball watching it, as DeVito chews up every scene he’s in – and nose stuck in his business.

The 96th Academy Awards saw Oppenheimer taking home the most awards of the night, a fine selection of memorable speeches and even a dog in the audience. But some of the funniest moments of the Oscars came in between all of these. For us, the highlight was undoubtedly a showdown for the ages between Michael Keaton and two foes of Batman: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito.
One presenter — well, pair of presenters — that got big laughs was the duo of Schwarzenegger and DeVito, who gave out the Oscars for Best Visual Effects and Best Editing. Now we all know that the two headlined Twins (which Oppenheimer editor Jennifer Lame was cool enough to shout out), but what they really wanted to focus on was taking down Batman, as Mr. Freeze and The Penguin were both discarded by the Caped Crusader in Batman & Robin and Batman Returns, respectively. One presenter — well, pair of presenters — that got big laughs was the duo of Schwarzenegger and DeVito, who gave out the Oscars for Best Visual Effects and Best Editing. Two of Batman‘s most iconic foes took the stage during the 2024 Academy Awards on Sunday (March 10), and they called out the Caped Crusader in the audience.
Arnold Schwarzenegger (who played Mr. Freeze in 1997′s Batman & Robin) and Danny DeVito (who played The Penguin in 1992′s Batman Returns) joined forces to present the Oscars for Best Visual Effects and Best Film Editing.
While up there, they took aim at Batman actor Michael Keaton.

After walking onstage at the Dolby Theatre, Danny said that they were paired up as presenters “for very obvious reasons.” Why was that? Arnold explained: “We both tried to kill Batman.”
The pair reflected on their battles with the iconic hero before realizing that Michael, who played Batman in Batman and Batman Returns before ceding the role to George Clooney for Batman & Robin, was in the audience.

Colin Farrell headlines detective drama Sugar for Apple TV+, and the first trailer has landed: more on it here.
Colin Farrell hasn’t been on our screens for a couple of years, after a barnstorming 2022 saw him reunite with Brendan Gleeson and writer and director Michael McDonagh for bleak comedy The Banshees Of Inisherin, don prosthetics to become unrecognizable as The Penguin opposite Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and star alongside Viggo Mortensen and Joel Edgerton in Ron Howard’s survival drama Thirteen Lives.
He now takes a rare television role, leading the cast of Sugar, a detective drama, for Apple TV+. The synopsis reads as follows:
Sugar is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Oscar nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels...

Typically, saying you're more excited about something other than the new Lady Gaga project is fair grounds for having your queer card taken away, but an exception can be made in the case of "The People's Joker." Indeed, as intrigued as I am to watch Gaga's Harley Quinn sing and dance her way through a toxic romance with Joaquin Phoenix's Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" (a sentence I couldn't have imagined writing after watching Phillips' original Scorsesean DC drama for the first time back in 2019), it's Vera Drew's trans-coming-of-age DC Comics superhero parody that has my current attention.
Drew, similar to her fellow trans comedienne Harper Steele (the subject of Will Ferrell's acclaimed upcoming Netflix documentary "Will & Harper"), has quietly worked on some of the more memorable and daring comedic offerings of the past decade. In addition to editing Scott Aukerman...
