Comic creator Frank Miller has struck a unique publishing deal with Abrams ComicArts.
The acclaimed graphic novel arm of art and illustration-centric Abrams will now be the book publisher of select titles from Miller’s independent and self-published book company, Frank Miller Presents. Miller, the creator behind The Dark Knight Returns, 300 and Sin City, becomes the latest big comic name to work with the company, which already works with comics author Brian Michael Bendis and comics painter Alex Ross, and is known for such titles as My Friend Dahmer and The Superhero’s Journey.
The first titles to be released under the partnership will hit in fall 2024 and include Ronin Rising, Miller’s sequel to his acclaimed and influential 1983 miniseries Ronin; and the young adult fantasy Pandora. Ronin Rising will be available in two formats, a collector’s edition and a manga edition, via Abrams’s new Kana imprint.

The Universal Monsters are one of the fundamental building blocks of the horror genre in Hollywood as we know it, where just about every horror film ever made can be related back to one of their many creep shows. Sometimes this connective tissue is thematic, but often it's an overt homage to the monstrous titular character.

Comicbook artist and writer Frank Miller, the man behind classics “300,” “Sin City” and “Daredevil,” is working on his new projects through Frank Miller Presents, the publishing banner he launched last year.
Miller, speaking at Lucca Comics & Games this week, told Variety what drove him to embark on this new creative venture. “I’d say I was driven by restlessness. I wanted to take advantage of my experience and my reputation, and to recognize that now it’s time to be an adult.”
Being aware that “the industry has been running down a certain path for a very long time,” Miller felt ready to explore new avenues and to work with undiscovered talents.
Frank Miller Presents is currently focusing its efforts on two main projects. The first is “Ronin,” whose new volumes are in the works. A sequel to the 1983-1984 limited series, the cyberpunk tale is based on Miller...

Oscar winner Taika Waititi has signed on to direct the first feature adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky and Mœbius’ bestselling graphic novel, The Incal, for Humanoids and Primer Entertainment.
Waititi will also co-write the script for the project, marking Humanoids’ first foray into film, with his frequent collaborator Jemaine Clement and Peter Warren.
The Incal is an epic space opera centered on shabby P.I. John Difool, who happens upon a mystical artifact known as the Incal—an object of great power coveted by many factions across the galaxy. As Difool learns of the Incal’s powers and purpose, he—along with a ragtag crew of unlikely cohorts—reluctantly embarks on what begins as an improbable mission to save the universe, and slowly becomes a spiritual journey examining the duality and meaning of existence.

As Corpse Club listeners know, we're big fans of all things Alien here on Daily Dead, and like a lot of fans, we're fascinated by the production behind one of the more divisive entries in the franchise, Alien 3. In the ’80s, author William Gibson was approached to write a screenplay for the third film, and while his story never came to fruition on screen, Gibson's version will soon come to life on the paneled page in a five-issue comic book series from Johnnie Christmas and Dark Horse:
Press Release: Milwaukie, Ore.,—An Alien blockbuster is coming to a comic shop near you when Dark Horse Comics brings William Gibson’s original, unproduced Alien 3 script to life with the help of writer and artist Johnnie Christmas. While Gibson was a contributor in the early phase of the writing for Alien 3, ultimately most of his concepts never made it into the final film.

Sebastian Lelio’s “Disobedience” is a quiet, understated drama with one of the buzziest sex scenes of any movie this year. One a few high-profile acquisition titles at the Toronto International Film Festival, “Disobedience” quickly became known as “the movie where Rachel Weisz spits in Rachel McAdams’ mouth” shortly after its premiere. And while that scene doesn’t convey the strong performances and measured emotional journey at the movie’s core, it certainly leaves an impression.

Last month a J. Scott Campbell variant cover for Marvel's Invincible Iron Man featuring Riri Williams caused a tremendous amount of discussion around how women are portrayed in comics. In this particular case, a Black teenager. But what it also did was highlight how reactions to critiques can say quite a lot. The variant cover was a Midtown Comics exclusive for the upcoming comic from creative team Brian Michael Bendis and Stefano Caselli. Marvel and Midtown Comics decided jointly to pull the cover, and while Campbell's reaction to critics wasn't great at first, it seems he was taking what fans were saying to heart. You may recall he did explain later his illustration was rushed: Sometimes these covers, like this one, are drawn in haste to meet a deadline and you have fly by the seat of your pants and fall back a bit on instinct rather than ultra-careful thought.

Last week fellow ComicMix columnist Molly Jackson wrote about the sexual harassment of cosplayer Mindy Marzac at the most recent Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California. Separately, Frank Cho drew a riff of the “infamous” Milo Manara cover and all hell broke loose.
Separately, country music icon Tim McGraw decided to do a benefit concert for the Sandy Hook Promise charity and suddenly he became persona non grata to the gun lobby while others call for his records to be banned.
Separately, political hack Peter Schweizer was a consultant for Sarah Palin when she was John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 Presidential election, and we’re supposed to take seriously his allegations that Hillary Clinton, as Secretary of State, okayed the sale of Uranium One, a Canadian company with uranium mining claims in the U.S., to Rosatom, a Russian atomic energy agency.

Fair warning: this one is long and a bit sappy. I would, however consider it a personal favor if you would give it a read and send me a hug.

Ok, another version of this article will be appearing on Bleeding Cool but this is the Mike Gold special edition, chock full of what’s not in the BC article.
A week or so ago I was writing the fuck you article to beat all fuck you articles. You would think with the year I’m having, I’d be ranting away all the time but somehow that’s not been my aspiration. Nope. Some how I’ve avoided ranting anywhere but on Facebook. I don’t have a lot of Facebook friends as I choose to police my page like Ferguson P.D. so anyone I don’t know, I shoot down their friend request like a unarmed black kid.

This has been quite the year for comic books. It’s seen no end of scandals and controversies, as every year does: Marvel continue to refuse to give proper credit (never mind royalties) to its creators and do stupid things like that one porny Milo Manara Spider-Woman cover, and DC has a whole laundry list of mistakes, the biggest being the time it “accidentally” poisoned the water supply for half of Ohio whilst printing lenticular covers.
They’ve continued their dominance over the box office, too, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians Of The Galaxy being the summer’s biggest blockbuster smashes, and DC’s plans to retake the cinema screen with Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice and Suicide Squad all falling into place. But enough of the doom and gloom and the adaptations, because there’s plenty good going on in the funnybooks themselves.

On Friday afternoon at Baltimore Comic Con, there was a panel of various comics creators to discuss the line between characters being sexy or attractive people, or being seen as sexualized objects. With the recent outcry over Italian erotic comics artist Milo Manara’s variant cover for the upcoming Spider-Woman series, this is and will be an important topic of discussion among comics fans and creators with people straddling all areas of the divide. The “Sexy or Sexualized” panel, which was moderated by former DC Comics publisher Paul Levitz, included a wide variety of creators, both old and new, including Gail Simone (Batgirl, Red Sonja), Marguerite Bennett (Lois Lane, Batgirl), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Secret Service), Adam Hughes (Catwoman, Wonder Woman), Christina Blanch (The Damnation of Charlie Wormwood), and Thom Zahler (Love and Capes). The variety of backgrounds and points of views allowed for a lively discussion, which included audience participation as well.

The rabbis of the Talmudic period debated two contradictory versions of Creation related in the Book of Genesis (Bereisheet in Hebrew). The first version of Creation actually referred to Adam’s first wife, Lilith, who was made at the same time as Adam from the dust of the Earth. But Lilith believed herself to be equal to Adam because God had shaped her from the dust of the Earth and had blown the Holy Spirit – the soul – into her form at the same He made Adam. This displeased Adam, so God replaced her with Eve, who was made from one of Adam’s ribs while he slept, so that she would always be dependent and subservient to him.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that women in possession of disposable income must be dissuaded from buying superhero comic books.
Okay, that’s not how literature works. It’s not even supposed to be how capitalism works. According to the economic theories I understand, under capitalism, the market determines what products are offered for sale. This is not a comment on the quality of the products, but rather what the public wants. So Coca-Cola and McDonalds make a lot of money, because the public wants cheap sugar, salt and fat.
However, the least common denominator is not the only way to be a successful capitalist. There is a lot of money to be made in niche markets. For example, there are enough people who don’t like Coke for a company like Jones Soda to be successful. There is probably a restaurant in your area that isn’t a burger joint like McDonalds,...

It's a web-sling and a miss for Marvel.
Marvel is debuting a new comic book starring Spider-Woman, and while that is exciting and amazing (girl power!), a special cover for Spider-Woman #1 seems to be less about reintroducing the classic character named Jessica Drew, and more about putting her... assets on display.
Pics: Everything Nicki Minaj Wore (Or Didn’t Wear) in 'Anaconda'
The special cover was drawn by Milo Manara, who is known for more provocative illustrations (Warning: some Nsfw images), and if you think that Spider-Woman is depicted more like an extra in Nicki Minaj's 'Anaconda' video than a crimefighter, you aren't alone. Nicki Minaj herself actually posted this shot to her Instagram.
Yep. It's the photoshopped mashup we should've seen coming, and it doesn't even seem like it was all that hard to accomplish.

The brand-new “Spider-Woman #1” is earning cheers for giving a female superhero a prominent place in the Marvel Universe, and jeers for the prominence of her butt. It was only last month that Marvel was being lauded by fans for its announcement that Thor would be replaced by a woman in November. This week, however, the House of Ideas has faced a significantly different response to a cover for its new Spider-Woman series — one that's been condemned as sexist and offensive to its intended female audience. The variant cover to Spider-Woman No. 1 is by Milo Manara, an Italian artist perhaps best known for his pornographic comics Click, Butterscotch and Hidden Camera. Good news: Marvel has a new comic book starring a female character! Better news: That female character is Spider-Woman, a.k.a. Jessica Drew, a severely underrated B-lister who hasn’t had a solo non-limited series since the late ’70s. Best news: Spider-Woman will team up Jessica with Silk, another female superhero, therefore all-but-assuring that Spider-Woman will be passing the Bechdel Test all over the place.

Lawyer. Avenger. Hero. Friend. Jennifer Walters has been called many things – but to most, she’s known only as the She-Hulk! Here’s your first look at She-Hulk #1, the all-new ongoing series written by Charles Soule and drawn by artist Javier Pulido.
Savior of the world on more than one occasion, Jennifer Walters is embarking on a brand new, and no less dangerous mission – opening a new law practice! But juggling her caseload and kicking bad guy butt might be a bit more complicated than she imagines. Not to mention the growing number of supervillains she’s making personal enemies of. Sure she can knock The Thing out in one punch, but this time she may have bit off more than she can chew! And that’s just the start of it. Don’t miss a new beginning for the jade champion of justice when She-hulk #1 smashes into comic shops this February!
