Indian director-producer Karan Johar wrapped up the conference section of the first Cinevesture International Film Festival with a lively conversation that ranged from working with the right people and Bollywood’s shifting gender politics, to letting slip a few new projects from his Dharma Productions slate.
Johar, who’s having a busy year as a producer with Love Storiyaan on Prime Video and Showtime on Disney+ Hotstar, started the session by talking about how he surrounds himself with people “who know all facets of cinema, not just the mainstream” – even if they’ve been outspoken critics of his work in the past.
He used the example of indie maverick Anurag Kashyap, and producer Somen Mishra, now head of content at Dharma and its Ott division Dharmatic Entertainment, who used to slate him on the popular ‘Passion of Cinema’ blog.

The Israeli show ‘Magpie’, which is a crime drama, is set to be adapted into Hindi. The working title for the same is ‘Kan Khajura’, which means centipede. The original show tells the story of Asa Katz, a man serving 17 years in prison for murder who gets released early on the condition that he cooperates with the police as their informant — a role (known as a magpie) that he also had in jail. Asa returns to his old neighbourhood and his older brother, David, who has little regard for his younger sibling.
Asa constantly tries to resolve this, but numerous conflicting interests put him in precarious situations, and he finds himself torn between his life of crime and his work with the police, while skilfully navigating both worlds to his advantage.

Exclusive: HBO content, including tentpoles such as House of The Dragon and Succession, is on the verge of moving from Indian platform Disney+ Hotstar, where it has been streaming since 2016, according to local industry sources.
The move seems to be in line with Disney CEO Bob Iger’s announcement of a restructuring and cost-cutting at the company. While HBO content, in particular Game Of Thrones, helped Disney+ Hotstar build its subscriber base when it first launched a pay tier, English-language content is still considered a niche market in India.
At the same time, the Disney-owned platform is under pressure to reverse its subscriptions decline with more mass market content. Although it remains India’s biggest streamer, Disney+ Hotstar’s subscription base dropped by 6 to 57.5 million during the quarter ended December 31, 2022. The decline is partly attributed to the loss of the Indian Premier League cricket tournament, which was bagged by Viacom18...

Streamers are keeping India’s more story-driven filmmakers busy, but are also taking their attention away from indie films.
The Knowledge Series at India’s Film Bazaar Online, which wrapped today, mapped out some of the realities for Indian filmmakers in a Covid-hit world. While some themes are familiar in film industries all over the world – rising production costs, shuttered cinemas and a shift to streaming – others were uniquely Indian.
On a ‘Future of Film Distribution’ panel, producer Guneet Monga explained how shooting restarted in India last October with Covid safety measures, including social distancing, zoning of film sets and regular testing.
