Mary Pat Bentel makes anything possible. Sure, sometimes she’ll give you, the director, an experienced smirk that says “Are you serious?” But then, just like that, before you can even blink, your dream actor has agreed to meet with you for coffee, she’s found a financier who wants only to give money to the subject matter of the film you happen to be directing, and that helicopter shot you timidly asked for gets scheduled for next week. While I know this first-hand because Mary Pat produced a documentary feature of mine years ago, I also know it from that good […]...

Joshua Leonard should look familiar to you by now. Not only was he one of the gang that helped revolutionize no-budget filmmaking with The Blair Witch Project, but he’s also become a go-to character actor over the last few years, including his acclaimed turn in Lynn Shelton’s Humpday. This week, Leonard releases his first feature as a writer-director, a dark drama-comedy titled The Lie, also featuring Jess Weixler (Teeth) and Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World), which Leonard stars in as Lonnie, an unsatisfied family man and would-be musician who tells his employers that his newborn daughter has died in order to get out of work. I spoke with Leonard over the phone about his career move, the process of making the film, and the industry as a whole.

#56. The Lie - Joshua Leonard From The Blair Witch Project to The Freebie, actor Joshua Leonard has been a much appreciated presence in Park City. There is no other place on the fest circuit where we could imagine seeing him unveil his feature narrative directorial debut. With filming having been completed almost one year to the date, and populated with Sundance folk in Jess Weixler, Mark Webber, Kelli Garner and Jane Adams, I expect Leonard had ample time to prep The Lie for a fest premiere. Life hasn't turned out as planned for Lonnie (Leonard) and Clover (Jess Weixler). When they fell in love during college, they were young and idealistic…she, politically progressive and he, progressively artistic. However, after an unplanned pregnancy during Clover’s second year of law school, they were forced to flip the script. Lonnie put his music on hold and got a shitty job. As our film begins,...
