After an 18-day enforced break, Newcastle returned to action at the Britannia Stadium knowing that any points put on the board would lift them out of the relegation zone following Tuesday night’s results.
With Fabricio Coloccini ruled out, Jonjo Shelvey was handed the captain’s armband – just as he was in La Manga – but it was the same old story for the Magpies as we lost yet again away from home.
On a night in which the blustery conditions played their part, we hardly looked like threatening Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland – who had produced a masterclass in the reverse fixture at St James’ Park.
After a pretty tame 80 minutes in which the home side had dominated the play without really creating any chances, Xherdan Shaqiri unleashed a piledriver from just outside the box which rifled into Rob Elliot’s net. Although the ‘keeper could...

Newcastle are planning a surprise move to bring David Ospina to Tyneside in the summer, according to Football Insider.
Providing we keep our Premier League status next year, there is likely to be an overhaul of the current squad and no-one’s position in the squad is safe.
While Tim Krul has been a long-term absentee, Rob Elliot has proved to be a more than adequate replacement – saving us on many occasions – but Karl Darlow has looked suspect in the few appearances he has made so far. With that in mind, the club’s transfer committee appear to be looking elsewhere and have the Arsenal deputy in their sights.
The Colombian has seen his game time severely limited since Petr Cech’s arrival at the Emirates in the summer and he is thought to be considering his options. Whether he’d want to make the move...

Jonjo Shelvey produced a sensational debut display as Newcastle United held on to defeat West Ham.
A lovely bending strike from Ayoze Perez after a free-flowing Magpies move put the home side into the lead, before a ridiculous 60-yard drilled ball from Shelvey set Daryl Janmaat clear down the right. The Dutchman centred for Georginio Wijnaldum who finished from close range for 2-0.
The home side let The Hammers back into the game in the opening minutes of the second half as a sloppy Chancel Mbemba back pass allowed Nikica Jelavic in to round Rob Elliot and make it 2-1. Newcastle held on which means they have picked up four valuable Premier League points in five days.
But it was Shelvey who stole the show. The £12 million-man lived up to his hefty price tag in a display that proved he is everything Newcastle have lacked in...

If there’s one thing we can gleam from Steve McClaren inexplicably fielding the same 11 on Monday just two days after a gruelling 90 minutes against Everton, it’s that he doesn’t believe he has an actual squad of players at Newcastle United he can trust.
The game after the boxing day fixtures is historically the match where you would usually rotate but it saw the likes of Florian Thauvin, Siem De Jong, Cheick Tiote and Yoan Gouffran stationary on the bench at the first whistle, and you just have to wonder if McClaren has given up on anyone outside his first 11-13 men.
Against Arsenal today, the safe bet would once again be on Newcastle being unchanged though McClaren is forced into one move with a hamstring injury seeing Vurnon Anita sidelined, with Tiote expected to be his replacement. Rob Elliott is also a huge...

Newcastle United won a game of football. Steve McClaren saved his job for another week.
That’s all that matters.
Georginio Wijnaldum’s cross-cum-shot that deflected off Martin Skrtel and into the roof of the Liverpool net, and sumptuous chip with what as almost the last kick of the game, was the difference on an ugly afternoon at St James’ Park.
With just two wins in the Barclays Premier League so far this season, Steve McClaren was desperate for a victory against Liverpool to silence the boo boys at St James’ Park.
Last weekend’s 5-1 humiliation away at former manager Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace meant Magpies headed into the game second bottom of the league. Bournemouth’s shock win away at reigning Champions Chelsea last night meant this encounter had more than a whiff of must win – or perhaps must not lose – about it.

Did that really just happen? A free-flowing Newcastle United scored six on a glorious afternoon at St James’ Park.
Four goals from Georginio Wijnaldum, and one a piece from Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic saw Newcastle romp home after Norwich gave them a couple of nervous moments in the first half.
United started on the front foot early on with Moussa Sissoko – who has been made to look ever so slightly delusional by his Champions League related comments in recent times – was at the forefront of all things good for Steve McClaren’s men. He was tireless and popped up all over the shop, dragging his teammates up the park on numerous occasions. Norwich were restricted to a couple of dangerous set pieces, which Rob Elliot dealt with easily, and a 30-yard Robbie Brady strike.

Newcastle United are not yet finished in the transfer window with five players set to leave on loan, according to the Northern Echo.
Steve McClaren has five players currently on the loan list including, Mike Williamson, Yoan Gouffran, Gael Bigirimana, Rob Elliot and Curtis Good who could all leave for Championship clubs.
The Football League loan window is due to open on September 9th and will shut on November 25th. This gives team in the lower leagues a chance to strengthen their sides if they have injury problems.
Williamson was rumoured to be on his way out of Tyneside on transfer deadline day but despite interest from Brighton a deal did not materialise. It’s likely that he will be offered to Chris Hughton’s side again as part of a loan deal.
Yoan Gouffran is wanted by Hull City and McClaren will also look to offload Elliot,...

Steve McClaren has said that Florian Thauvin will start against Northampton Town tonight as Newcastle embark on their Capital One Cup campaign.
The Magpies’ boss also hinted that Siem de Jong could be named in the first team and said that he “should be chomping at the bit to play.”
Fringe players Mike Williamson and Cheick Tiote will also start the game with either Karl Darlow or Rob Elliot playing in goal.
McClaren is set to hand Thauvin his first start for Newcastle after the midfielder made his competitive debut against Manchester United at the weekend where he came on as a substitute.
The Magpies’ boss also mentioned that Paul Dummett could be on the bench for tonight’s game after making good progress on his hamstring injury.
The Toon boss said:
“It will be nice if Thauvin can come in and have a game, Cheicky hasn’t played this season.

The opposition may have been different but Newcastle United were very much the same as they have been defensively all throughout the pre-season campaign – woeful.
New signing Aleksandar Mitrovic may have made his Magpies debut at Bootham Crescent, but it was one to forget as the Magpies succumbed to their third pre-season loss in six matches in front of 2,048 travelling supporters – and that despite birthday boy Ayoze Perez grabbing his first goal of pre-season.
Strikes from Anthony Straker and trialist Reece Thompson were enough to hand York City a 2-1 victory and leave Steve McClaren scratching his head and continuing to search for a formula to resolve the defensive deficiencies that are still all too prevalent in his side.

Alan Pardew has been linked to yet another of his former charges at Newcastle United – and this time it is young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.
The Chronicle claim that both Crystal Palace and Southampton are eyeing up a move for the 18-year-old, who has also been tracked by Arsenal and who is wanted on loan by Oxford United.
Oxford are hoping to take the 18-year-old stopper on a season-long loan deal during the forthcoming campaign, with Woodman keen to gain first-team experience having failed to make an appearance during a one-month temporary switch to Hartlepool United in 2014-15 – and the goalkeeper has impressed in a couple of pre-season appearances for the Magpies.

The son of Newcastle goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman, who Pardew also reportedly wants to take with him to Selhurst Park, the shot-stopper is rated as one of the most-promising youngsters at Newcastle.

Newcastle United have been linked with a whole host of incomings this summer but three of their French-speaking contingent appear to be on their way out of the club after reportedly being placed on the transfer list.
Yoan Gouffran, Mehdi Abeid and Gabriel Obertan have been deemed surplus to requirement at the Magpies and have been put up for sale, according to The Sun.
While centre-back Mike Williamson and goalkeeper Rob Elliot are also believed to be available at the right price, it appears as if the three French-speaking players are those most likely to depart St James’ Park in the coming weeks.

It’s not all doom and gloom at Newcastle United right now. They may be stuck down in 15th in the Premier League and fighting for their top-flight future, but they are at the very summit of another table – unfortunately it just so happens to be the injury table.
This is a sight that Newcastle fans have seen all too often in recent years, and their injury room currently contains 10 players – two more than second-placed Queens Park Rangers.
Papiss Cisse (knee), Adam Armstrong (thigh), Siem de Jong (thigh) and Paul Dummett (hamstring) have all joined the list this week, rocketing the Magpies right to the top.

Rob Elliot (thigh), Rolando Aarons (hamstring), Jak Alnwick (wrist), Massadio Haidara (knee), Cheick Tiote (knee) and Steven Taylor (calf) were already receiving treatment before the beginning of this week, while four more of their teammates have now joined them.

Arguably two of Newcastle’s greatest performers of the last Premier League era.
Arguably two of Newcastle’s perennial under performers of the last two Premier League seasons.
How do you solve a couple of problems like Fabricio Coloccini and Tim Krul?
Well, one way to do it, and the way that every other professional club in the world chooses to do it, is to have a squad brimming with players that are competing for places in the starting XI.
This is something that has gone out of the window since The Magpies returned to the Premier League in 2010.
Tim Krul has an able deputy in Rob Elliot, but the gulf in class between the pair is always evident.

Newcastle United are actively preparing for life in the Premier League next season despite finding themselves just two points about the relegation zone – with Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper Fabricio Agosto believed to be on their transfer list.
The 27-year-old stopper is also being tracked by Everton – and he would be available for a relatively-modest £3.6 million during the summer transfer window.
Agosto’s stock has risen following an impressive 10 clean sheets in 28 La Liga matches this season, and Deportivo could be forced to sell due to their perilous financial situation.

Reports in Spanish paper Deportivo Mundo claim that contract negotiations have broken down between the goalkeeper and the the club, meaning he could be sold this summer.
The 5ft 11in former Valladolid, Recreativo and Real Betis stopper was capped once at Spain Under-20 level but he has never received a call-up to the senior international squad.

Not for the first time in the club’s history, Newcastle United have a problem. With their first team squad already being down to its bare bones, they’ve now also lost their only two senior goalkeepers to fairly serious looking injuries. Tim Krul’s out until mid January, and Rob Elliott has made an existing thigh strain worse by playing through it.
If all that wasn’t bad enough, Newcastle’s festive fixture list is, at best, hellish. With Chelsea dispatched their next opponents are Arsenal, Tottenham, Sunderland, Manchester United and Everton, with the return leg at Chelsea and the Fa Cup third round all awaiting in the new year. Jak Alnwick’s mam won’t be sleeping a wink this Christmas.
With the transfer window shut, the Premier League do offer provision for clubs in such a situation to apply for an emergency loan.

An incredible night on which an astonishing selection came together to earn a brilliant result.
Every Newcastle player deserved every plaudit and every single line of praise inevitably showered on them. And regardless of the accusations that Manuel Pellegrini deserves criticism for his selection, his team of millionaires and ten internationals should have rolled over a team made up of a third choice centre-half pairing, a third (at least) central midfield three, and our fourth choice striker.
But through a disciplined, dogged performance that relied in part on an exceptional goal line clearance by returning hero Ryan Taylor, Newcastle won 2-0. It could have been more, as Obertan was adjudged to have been offside in a very close call, and the was then denied a stone wall penalty.

Having already seen Paul Dummett and Daryl Janmaat injured over the international break (though both have been cleared to return to training for the Leicester game), Newcastle are now sweating on the fitness of Tim Krul after he withdrew from the Holland squad.
The suggestion is that this could well be flare up of the elbow injury that kept him out for six weeks in 2012-13, and if that is the case, it’s bad news for Newcastle. Obviously, the club have Karl Darlow out on loan at Nottingham Forest, but the more likely solution would be a first team spell for Rob Elliot.
Considering his form in goal – and his unfortunate fondness for leaking goals – that would be a problem heading into some key games, particularly against Spurs and Liverpool. So in that regard, Newcastle will hope that Krul’s injury is nothing more than...

It wasn’t exactly a secret, but Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow have now been officially confirmed as Newcastle’s two newest signings, in a deal believed to be worth about £7m to Forest.
Stuart Pearce won’t be left without the players just yet however, as both English prospects will return to the club for the entirety of this season – which kicks off today for the former Newcastle left-back.
Pearce had been very public about his frustration that the pair had effectively been sold out from under him, but he will at least have a significant transfer boost for the new season without losing his star prospects. And if the pair help his side gain promotion, he will surely have very little to complain about.
Lascelles is a very highly rated centre-back, who could well have gone straight into the first-team picture this year, given Newcastle...

Newcastle United have just announced their squad numbers for the coming season, and there are a couple of revelations that stick out from the updated list. First and foremost, Hatem Ben Arfa has lost his number 10 shirt to incoming attacking midfielder Siem De Jong, confirming not only that the player will likely take up a starting position behind a lone central striker, but also that Ben Arfa is probably on his way out.
It’s no great surprise that Ben Arfa has ben shifted down the pecking order – taking up Mathieu Debuchy’s vacant number 26 shirt – given the continued rumours that he is on the verge of being shifted out of the door, but it is somewhat strange that the player has been given a number at all. Precedent has suggested that such obviously unwanted players would be given no squad number at all – as Rob Lee...

Newcastle fans could hardly have hoped to see their team invest in a couple of new players ahead of the new season, let alone the seven signings they’ve already made – including this weekend’s confirmation of Facundo Ferryra’s loan from Shakhtar Donetsk – and it looks like Alan Pardew is not yet finished in the market.
Having already confirmed that the club are still looking at bringing in a first choice striker – despite the impressive pre-season form of Emmanuel Riviere, and the acquisitions of the Frenchman, Ayoze Perez and now Ferreyra – but it looks like the manager has cast his eye backwards to building a stronger foundation for the future with the impending capture of two English prospects from Nottm Forest. The news has just broken that – as expected – Newcastle are on the verge of signing both Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow from Stuart Pearce’s side.

It’s a rumour that has a tendency to spring up on the grapevine every summer but one that could bear dangerous fruit this year. You’d need an extra pair of hands to count the number of times Tim Krul has been touted to end his eight-year Tyneside residency and move to the bright lights of London, specifically those glowing in the vicinity of White Hart Lane.
There were flurry of reports across the weekend suggesting Tottenham are ready to intensify their long-standing interest in our Dutch international shot-stopper with current number one Hugo Lloris expected to pack his bags and leave North London to link up with the ludicrously rich Paris Saint Germain, who will be able to quench his thirst for Champions League football.
And it could have devastating connotations for us with Krul understood to be desperate to improve his chances of usurping...

To the casual observer the final Premier League table suggest a relatively stress free campaign for Newcastle after we finished up in 10th position and achieved the pre-season objective set by Mike Ashley.
But for every Toon supporter the second half of the season was an unmitigated failure as we plummeted from the fringes of the top-four and became embroiled in a mini-league battle with Southampton, Stoke and, surprising to most, Crystal Palace for the right to stay in the top-half.
Thus it makes selecting a Player of the Season that bit tougher as very few displayed enough consistency in 2014 to warrant inclusion in the reckoning for this most illustrious of awards.
Many will throw forward the names of Loic Remy and Mathieu Debuchy as the only two players to emerge with any shred of credibility from this most unsettling of seasons.
Debuchy is unquestionably up there but Remy,...

Newcastle United will move for Reading stopper Alex McCarthy if current number one Tim Krul joins Juventus in January or over the summer.
The Daily Star has linked Dutch goalie Krul, 25, with a £20 million move to the Serie A giants as Antonio Conte turns his attention to finding a successor for Gianluigi Buffon in Turin.
Krul is under contract at St James’ Park until 2016 and recently won plaudits for a string of outstanding saves as the Toon beat Tottenham Hotpsur 1-0 at White Hart Lane.
Magpies manager Alan Pardew thus has a contingency plan if he is sold and is set to bid for 23-year-old McCarthy. Since the Royals were relegated from the Premier League last term he has been first choice under Nigel Adkins.

Hull City left Tyneside with all three points on Saturday after a pulsating 3-2 victory over Newcastle.
The visitors trailed at the break thanks to a brace from Magpies forward Loic Remy, but Steve Bruce’s side produced a stunning comeback to move them into the top-half the Premier League table.
Goals from Robbie Brady, Ahmed Elmohamady and Sone Aluko were enough to earn City their first away win of the campaign in front of over 51,000 at St. James’ Park.
It was a bright start from the home side, with Remy looking a constant threat down the left and Vurnon Anita, Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko all linking up well in midfield.
And it was Remy who broke the deadlock after ten minutes when he grabbed his first goal for the club since his loan move from Queens Park Rangers.

Fabrico Coloccini put in a captain’s performance to salvage a draw for Newcastle United against a tricky Braga side at St. James’ Park in their last pre-season game.
The Magpies had trailed earlier in the game after a contentious first-half penalty decision put Alan on the scoresheet before Coloccini headed home from a corner to equalise.
Newcastle had the game’s first chance with only two minutes gone as Hatem Ben Arfa jinked down the left wing and drilled a low cross to an onrushing Coloccini, who pulled it wide.
The goalkeepers were finally called into action five minutes later as Braga’s Eduardo saved at full stretch from Papiss Cisse, who turned his marker before attempting to dink it to the Portuguese shot-stopper’s left.
Braga’s best chance of the half came after 37 minutes as Baiano charged into space on the right wing before crossing from deep,...

Puma have officially unveiled Newcastle United’s new “Wonga” sponsored 2013/14 away shirt for next season. Additionally, the club have also revealed the new away goalkeeper’s top for next season.
The kits have been described as featuring an “insignia blue shirt, shorts and socks, with light blue trim to complement both the colouration in the iconic Newcastle United club crest and the logo of new principal sponsor, Wonga.com”.
Both kits are modelled in official promotional stills (above) featuring Newcastle defender Steven Taylor and goalkeeper Rob Elliot.
With the reveal of the new kits coming just four days before Newcastle’s final game of the season against Arsenal, we can now probably expect the club to give these kits their first run-out on Sunday at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle United travel to the Liberty Stadium for the third time in their history this afternoon, hoping to make it three out of three in avoiding defeat. A draw when the two sides met in the Championship back in 2010 and a hard-fought 2-0 victory during their incredible winning run towards the end of the last campaign have made their trips to Wales joyful in recent seasons.
However this fixture could be the worst time for the Geordies to play Swansea at their home ground as the mood will be jubilant after their League Cup victory last Sunday.
Kick-off for the non-uk televised (though it is showing overseas) Premier League clash is at 3pm. Here’s the team news ahead of the game;
For Swansea, defenders Neil Taylor and Chico Flores are out. Goalkeeper Michel Vorm could play if he can shake off the flu.
Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini misses the game with a back injury.

Newcastle fans’ hopes of seeing their mercurial French attacker back on the pitch to link up with his compatriots Moussa Sissoko and Yoan Gouffran this weekend are in tatters once more, as it has been confirmed that Hatem Ben Arfa’s comeback might not happen yet.
The French former Marseille player had been suggested as a part of the Newcastle squad that will make its way to Swansea ahead of the 3pm kick-off at the Liberty Stadium, but it now seems his comeback is likely to be put back – because he’s not yet fit, according to Alan Pardew.
Ben Arfa has now been out since December with a hamstring problem, and Pardew spoke in his pre-match press conference to confirm that the player is behind with his fitness work:
“His conditioning’s disappointed me this week. He’ll be working hard over the next few days. He lacks a bit of fitness.

Things couldn’t have got off to a much worse half for the Toon Army though as they fell behind to an early goal. Poor defending allowed the ball to come in to Schneiderlin in the box, who struck low past Premier League debutant Rob Elliot in the Newcastle goal.

Both Bordeaux and Newcastle have already qualified for the knock-out stages of the competition, the only variable that remains is who’ll top the group, and who’ll go through as runner up. Bordeaux only need a draw whereas United have to win.

Tonight’s game against Everton represents another stern test for Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United, with some fans underwhelmed by the results so far this term (though four points from the first three fixtures is far from disastrous), and Pardew will likely be wary of a team who have already taken six points against Manchester United and Aston Villa.
In the corresponding fixture last season Newcastle were embarrassed by a storming Everton front-line, and some lackluster defending to add a disappointing full-stop on a very good season, and this year Everton have strengthened, despite losing star youngster Jack Rodwell to Manchester City. They still have a very talented midfield, including the storming Marouane Fellaini and the resurgent Steven Pienaar and Newcastle will do well to be wary of the front-line threat of Nikita Jelavic.
So, ahead of the game, what major questions do we want to see answered on and off the pitch?...

Newcastle United lined up for their first pre-season friendly of the summer this evening in their brand new black and white Puma home kit in front of a small but spirited crowd in the Stadion an der Gellertstraße, Chemnitz, Germany, and were beaten by the home side, after a ninth minute goal from Anton Fink.
6,700 fans turned out to see the home side, who have already played three pre-season games, rebuff a host of Newcastle chances, thanks to outstanding goalkeeper Philipp Pentke who saved from Dan Gosling, Haris Vuckic and Shola Ameobi.
As is the nature of these games, Alan Pardew took the game as an opportunity to give some new and fringe players a run out, with every single one of the named substitutes playing some part apart from veteran goalkeeper Steve Harper, and in truth Newcastle fans shouldn’t look at the result as indicative of anything.

6,700 fans turned out to see the home side, who have already played three pre-season games, rebuff a host of Newcastle chances, thanks to outstanding goalkeeper Philipp Pentke who saved from Dan Gosling, Haris Vuckic and Shola Ameobi.

Newcastle United’s 2011/12 season was one of hugely exceeded expectations, tactical nous and some incredibly well considered signings, and with this summer already bringing rumours and news of several new signings, what was a relatively thin squad last year should be bolstered by some new arrivals ahead of the home game against Tottenham in August.
But if Newcastle manager Alan Pardew wants to build on last year’s successes and make a concentrated effort to overcome the next step and qualifying for the Champions League, he will need to sort out some of the lesser players in the squad, and make way for more new faces. The days of bloated squads sitting on contracts and not offering anything to the first team are gone at St James Park, thanks to the frugal business model of owner Mike Ashley, and there will be more outgoing deals than those which have already seen Peter Lovenkrands,...

Team news ahead of Newcastle United vs Stoke City at St James’ Park. Kick-off time is at 3pm and the match is not being screened live anywhere in the UK.
Newcastle United keeper Tim Krul is expected to overcome the slight back injury that forced him to sit out of training on Thursday. Magpies boss Alan Pardew revealed it was mostly a precautionary move and he has back-up keeper Rob Elliott on standby.
Cheick Tiote, Danny Guthrie, James Perch and Gabriel Obertan all returned to training this week and are expected to be available for selection, meaning United will be likely to line-up the same way as they did in the win against Bolton with Tiote likely replacing Perch in center of midfield and Hatem Ben Arfa, Papiss Cisse and Demba continuing a three-man attack.
Leon Best, Sammy Ameobi and Sylvain Marveaux are both back in training and will be...

The race for those coveted Champions League spots kicks into another gear this weekend with three big matches in the Premier League. Arsenal take on Chelsea at the Emirates, and Tottenham Hotspur travel to Queens Park Rangers for the evening kick-off on Espn.
Sandwiched in-between both them games is a good old fashioned 3pm kick-off between Newcastle United and Stoke City.
Newcastle United will be hoping to keep up their momentum that has seen them win five games off the bounce and hit the lofty heights of fifth place, only an inferior goal difference keeping them from fourth.
Stoke City meanwhile are looking a tired side after their European excursions this season and are probably already thinking about how they can improve next year, though Tony Pulis will never field a side that won’t put up a fight.
Here’s four key things to look out for in tomorrow...

Newcastle United’s star goalkeeper Tim Krul sat out training yesterday with a back spasm and is a doubt for tomorrow’s home game against Stoke City.
Magpies boss Alan Pardew said at yesterday’s press conference that he expects Krul to be fit to play on Saturday after some rest, but that he is not concerned about the untested back-up keeper Rob Elliott coming in to play at the weekend if required.
Pardew said;
“Tim had a little spasm in his back, we didn’t see a problem with that.” “It should go away. If not, Robbie Elliot will play and Robbie’s been absolutely brilliant in the background here.”
Elliott, who was signed from Charlton for a nominal fee in the summer, has only played once in the first team for Newcastle, conceding three and looking nervous in the 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup in September.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has asked Chief Scout Graham Carr to draw up a short list of players that could be available in the Summer transfer window, according to a Sunday Sun report.
The much blighted Ashley, who was seen laughing and kidding around as his side was being decimated by Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 last night, visited the club’s Benton training grounds on Thursday to hold several meetings with senior staff, one of which was over their 2012 transfer policy.
Ashley has instructed Carr, the man who has spotted the likes of Yohan Cabaye, Cheick Tiote and January’s mega signing Papiss Demba Cisse, to draw up a list of players who will either be out of contract or could be available for the right price in the summer.
Having impressed against The Toon in a couple of games this season, Blackburn’s talented Canadian winger Junior Hoilett is...

The only undefeated run in English football was surrendered last week when Newcastle United were overturned by Blackburn Rovers in the Carling Cup on Wednesday in a thrilling encounter. Tonight live on Sky Sports Monday Night Football The Geordies will be hopeful of preserving their unbeaten run in the league for at least a few games longer. They travel to Stoke and the Britannia Stadium, an unhappy hunting ground where United usually fail miserably and last season’s heavy 4-0 thrashing was a game Alan Pardew got his tactics completely wrong.
But defensively they are a much stronger unit these days. Jose Enrique’s head had been turned by the time the Stoke game turned up on the fixture list last season and he was subbed before half time after looking particularly uninterested (the official word was that he was carrying an injury) and Sol Campbell was part of a...

When Newcastle United took on Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League a month ago at St James’ Park and beat them comfortably 3-1, the North East club must have felt like they were in a different league to their opponents. Rovers were completley outclassed that day and if Newcastle had shown more composure in front of goal, could have won by several more. United currently lie joint third in the league, a whopping 14 points ahead of bottom placed Blackburn but the Carling Cup is always a great equaliser, and Newcastle will know that all too well having needed extra time to beat both Nottingham Forest and Scunthorpe in previous rounds, who actually are in different leagues.
With many changes expected on both sides, tonight’s game is expected to feature players with something to prove and a tight affair is predicted. For Blackburn, under fire boss Steve Kean may see...

Updated: The club have officially confirmed the injury and say Shola will be out for 4-6 weeks.
Shola Ameobi’s battle to regain fitness has hit a massive stumbling block after pulling his hamstring that will keep him out of action for the next six weeks. The Newcastle Chronicle’s Chief Sports Writer Lee Ryder just twittered the news.
Ameobi had been hoping to start Wednesday’s Carling Cup game against Blackburn Rovers, his first start since Qpr game in September but obviously his latest injury struggle puts the kibosh on that. His absence weakens Pardew’s front line as Ameobi lately has been the man to come on when Demba Ba loses interest in matches and obviously scored that cracker last week to equalize late on against Spurs.
Meanwhile Steven Taylor has suffered a broken nose in the win against Wigan on Saturday. He managed to play the rest...

(P.S. – I am a Newcastle United fan, so as always my match previews are bias and for the like minded);
Having ended a run of five Blackburn victories in a row at St James’ Park, Alan Pardew’s Newcastle go into today’s 3pm Premier League tie against Mick McCarthy’s Wolves at Molineux hoping to put an end to another unwanted hoodoo. Newcastle haven’t won on this ground since September 1958 (15 top flight attempts) and more often that not have found the Molineux a tough ground to take anything away from.
In last seasons 1-1 draw, Newcastle had to survive a barrage of military style assault challenges from the likes of Karl Henry (mostly aimed at his enemy Joey Barton!) to make it out alive after 90 minutes, let alone with any points but with the Scouser now enjoying life in London, perhaps we could be in something of a quieter affair this afternoon.
