"The Strangers" Will Terrorize Again! Low Budget Flick Gets a Sequel!

25 July 2009 9:08 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

The low budget flick "The Strangers" gets a sequel and is set to begin shooting this fall.

The original, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, was shot for $9 million and eventually made $80 million worldwide; hence, the inevitable sequel.

Bryan Bertino, who wrote and directed the first film, will not helm the sequel. He did write the script for it though, and the plot is being kept under wraps right now.

I think Bertino did a great job in setting up the mood and atmosphere of the original film, so why was he not invited to direct the sequel?

The producers instead, hired French director Laurent Briet, a commercial and music video director who also helped shape "The Ring's" visual effects.

We know Tyler and Speedman will not be back for the sequel (unless they return as ghosts Ha!), but one thing's for sure. The masked intruders will continue to terrorize folks, »

25 July 2009 12:39 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Here are some things you shouldn't miss on this July 24, 2009:

• At Comic-Con, Gary Oldman, who stars in the upcoming "The Book of Eli," announced that a follow-up to "The Dark Knight" will shoot next year. "I think the next Batman is next year," he said. "We start shooting next year. You didn't hear that from me." Already? (via Coming Soon) Update: Well, turns out Oldman was kind of joking. What the hell?

• Coming Soon also chatted with Disney's Oren Aviv, who said this about "Pirates of the Caribbean 4": "We're going to shoot 'Pirates 4' in April or May of next year," he said. "It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger."

• A sequel to the recent horror flick "The Strangers" is set for principal photography this fall. The first one grossed $54 million. Laurent Briet will »

Saw VII and a sequel to The Strangers are in the works

24 July 2009 4:37 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Oh, you are mighty tricky, Jigsaw. And Strangers? Just get out.

A seventh Saw movie has just been greenlit by super hit-makers Lionsgate, according to Variety. While the sixth installment of the torture for redemption franchise is due in theaters October 23rd, the next sequel is aiming to start shooting next January.

David Hackl, who was production designer for Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV, and also directed the oh-so wonderful Saw V, will helm Saw VII. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who wrote Saw IV, Saw V and now Saw VI will sit down at their gold-plated typewriter for Saw VII. (Golly, would it kill this franchise to consider at least using a subtitle?)

Oren Koules and Mark Burg, producers of the six movies of the franchise, will continue to do so.

As if that news didn’t whet your thirst for blood, fans of last year’s »

‘The Strangers 2′ moves forward: Production to begin in September

24 July 2009 2:31 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

"Sorry, I gave at the office."

The Strangers: Part 2 will begin production in September with rumors brewing that the sequel to the 2008 horror flick, The Strangers, is believed to take place in a trailer park.

Replacing the lone bright spot of the film, director Bryan Bertino, is French music video director Laurent Briet. Though written by Bertino and who will likely be influential during production, The Strangers 2 works to duplicate the surprising success of the original.

The Strangers starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple stuck in a house in the woods while masked psychopaths try to ruthlessly kill them. The film was budgeted at $9 million and made an impressive $54 million domestically during a highly competitive 2008 summer.

I wasn’t a fan of the movie yet Bertino’s direction of the film gave something to look forward to. Too bad he’s missing from the director’s chair this time around. »

Variety announced a pair of horror franchise sequels prepping for production starting off with word a sequel to last year's The Strangers will begin shooting next fall for Universal's genre arm Rogue Pictures. The original, written and directed by Bryan Bertino, was a breakout hit centering on a couple whose remote getaway becomes a place of terror when masked strangers invade. Bertino came back to write The Strangers 2, but French helmer Laurent Briet will direct. Briet's career includes music videos and some work on the visual effects for The Ring 2. There is no word on a storyline, but the end of the original film had the invaders heading off in their fan saying something to the effect of "It'll be easier next time." The film ended up grossing $80 million worldwide on a $9 million budget. The biggest question at the end was whether or not Liv Tyler's character survived. »

The Strangers Are Coming Back

Variety is reporting this morning that a sequel has been confirmed for last years sleeper hit The Strangers, making them more "The don't really know them that well, but we did meet them once's." Laurent Briet is set to direct, making it his feature film debut, having done music videos and visual effects on The Ring. It had a lot of scares, so if he can visually effect them he can probably direct them. Original director Bryan Bertino is still scripting, but has elected not to direct, presumably being tied down with work on his next horror Alone. Shooting will begin in the fall and we as yet have no casting news, so whether it will include Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman is up in the air. Presumably the only necessary ingredients are the scary masked people, but who knows. You can probably tell that I haven't seen The Strangers, mostly »

Sequel To The Strangers Planned

Part of a mini-trend for home invasion movies, with films like Funny Games and Them, The Strangers scared the wiggins out of anyone who ever answered a ring on the doorbell late at night. It also made $80million on a $9million budget, so it should come as no surprise to learn that Strangers 2 is on its way.The film film, written and directed by Bryan Bertino, saw Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman terrorised by masked visitors to their house. This new film's plot is still under wraps, but we're betting that it also involves masks and uninvited guests.Bertino also wrote this sequel, but this time directorial duties will be handed over to French commercials and music video director Laurent Briet, who's no stranger to horror after contributing visual effects to The Ring. Whether that means that this second film will have a more supernatural bent remains to be seen, »

The Strangers 2 Now Hiring: Crew and News

30 March 2009 12:25 PM, PDT | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

Some hazy news is in circulation on the horror film "The Strangers 2" with a French, amateur director likely taking the leadership role on this sequel. Apparently, French director Laurent Briet (Little Minx Exquisite Corpse..., Warp Vision...) is in talks with Rogue Pictures for directing duties on this film and with two previous films to his credit Briet will likely add a European flourish for violence to "The Strangers 2." Already the script has been written for the film by Bryan Bertino; so, production is likely to begin once directing negotiations have come to an agreement, with a 2010 release date as the goal.

Have a look at a couple nostalgic movie stills from initial film, "The Strangers," to quell some of the anticipation for this, likely straight-to-dvd production.

French director to helm 'The Strangers 2'

Even though The Strangers was pretentious, unscary and brimming with played out horror clichés, that won't stop Rogue Pictures from giving the film the sequel treatment. Why, you ask? Well, the movie, written and directed by newcomer Bryan Bertino, earned a pretty decent domestic haul of $52.6 million. Not too shabby for a flick not many people heard nor buzzed about.

According to Bloody-Disgusting, a source within Rogue reports that French director Laurent Briet is in talks to helm The Strangers 2, which will take place in a trailer park. Bertino also wrote the sequel. »
