Thanksgiving filmmaker Eli Roth has been dreaming of a Thanksgiving-themed slasher movie since he was 12 years old, and he thought he’d forever scratched that itch when he made a fictitious trailer for a movie called Thanksgiving inside of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse (2007) double feature. But much to his surprise, genre fans wouldn’t let go of the idea of seeing a feature-length take on the concept, so Roth and his childhood friend/co-writer, Jeff Rendell, eventually put pen to paper. The duo still took their time to crack the story, using a Black Friday riot at a big box store as their inciting incident, and Roth, at this very moment, now has the best reviews of his career.
“We thought, ‘All right, we’re done. We made the best parts [in the fake trailer]. Now we don’t even have to make the movie,’” Roth tells The Hollywood Reporter. “But for years,...

It’s nearly time, horror fans! After more than 16 years of anticipation, Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is set to debut in theaters this weekend, based on his memorable trailer entry that was first featured in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse double feature back in 2007.
At a recent press day for Thanksgiving, Roth discussed the pressure he felt once he and writer/longtime collaborator Jeff Rendell set out to finally make the feature film version of this idea and how they approached the story and feel of the film. Eli also chatted about how Thanksgiving examines some of the darker elements of the November holiday, working with his cast, and more.
Check out our conversation with Eli Roth below and look for Thanksgiving in theaters everywhere, beginning tonight!

Eli Roth is back. And he’s here for “Thanksgiving.”
For the past decade, Roth has nimbly moved through different genres – erotic thriller (“Knock Knock”), revenge movie (“Death Wish”), family fantasy (“The House with a Clock in Its Walls”), nature documentary (“Fin”) and big budget video game adaptation (next year’s “Borderlands”). But now he’s back with a down-and-dirty horror movie, this time centered around one of the happiest time of year.
In “Thanksgiving,” adapted from a fake trailer that Roth had made for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse” project, a superstore’s super sale leads to tragedy. A year later a masked man in a pilgrim costume, known as John Carver, starts taking out the townspeople involved in the tragedy, one by one. And, yes, the kills are just as creative and stomach-churning as you’d expect from the man behind “Hostel,” “Cabin Fever” and “The Green Inferno.

The Vista Theatre hosted two premieres on Tuesday night — the first was for Thanksgiving, Eli Roth’s latest horror offering based on the fake trailer he created for the 2007 film Grindhouse. The second was for the movie house itself, which held its first premiere since Quentin Tarantino purchased the single-screen theater in 2021 and reopened it this past weekend.
Roth shared what it meant that his film was the first premiere at his close friend’s theater, noting, “It’s a really meaningful moment. Quentin’s been telling me about the Vista for years, and he bought it and he’s been refurbishing it. It’s going to be 35 [mm] only, and then when the timing worked out that the first movie was going to be Thanksgiving, I just thought, this is poetic. This is so beautiful. Only Quentin could do this; he’s more than a friend, he’s a brother...

Behaviour Interactive’s global multiplayer horror video game Dead by Daylight celebrated its 7th anniversary earlier this year, and it’s still adding new content. In fact, the game is going to be receiving a major update on November 28th – as that’s the day the iconic killer doll Chucky is going to be added into the mix! The news of Chucky’s addition was broken by IGN, and they were even able to confirm that Brad Dourif is providing Chucky’s voice for the game. Behaviour informed them that players will be able to customize Chucky’s appearance with the Good Gal outfit – which will turn him into his bride Tiffany Valentine, voiced by Jennifer Tilly.
IGN notes, “As you’d expect, Chucky is adept at sneaking around the map, and he has a Slice & Dice ability that lets him lunge at his larger would-be victims in order to more efficiently close the gap.

The Vista Theatre in Los Feliz, which was bought by Quentin Tarantino in 2021, is finally ready to unveil its renovation with a special anniversary screening Saturday of “True Romance” with Tarantino hosting.
The theater’s regular programming kicks off Nov. 17 with Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving” in 35mm, followed by Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” in 70mm starting on Nov. 22.
“Quentin basically retained the auditorium — it’s intact, it’s been rehabbed and it’s still new and beautiful, but the overall auditorium is in intact condition,” said chief operating officer Lance Alspaugh.
The reopening of the 100-year old movie house is another sign that Los Angeles filmgoers are eager to support independent and classic film programming, particularly in historic venues. Netflix’s 101-year-old Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, which is programming in partnership with the American Cinematheque, reopens after an extensive remodel on Nov. 9, while Vidiots opened its screening and rental venue...

It was a moment film nerds could only dream of: Actor/director Joe Lynch was seated next to Quentin Tarantino at an event, and they were going deep on lenses. Specifically, how Tarantino had gotten his mitts on Ultra Panavision 70, a 70mm format from Ben Hur, for his 2015 Western The Hateful Eight. Not much could distract Lynch from a moment like that — until he heard Stuart Gordon, of Re-Animator fame, discussing his latest collaboration with screenwriter Dennis Paoli: a modern-day retelling of H.P. Lovecraft’s story “The Thing at the Doorstep” called Suitable Flesh.

Shannon Lee, daughter of the legendary actor and martial artist Bruce Lee, recently told The Telegraph that she remains unaware why Quentin Tarantino decided to portray her father as “the a-hole” in his 2019 movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Shannon Lee spoke out against the film’s portrayal of Bruce Lee at the time, which led to a highly-publicized back and forth between her and Tarantino in many interviews.
“It’s interesting. I actually don’t know,” Shannon says now about the reasoning behind Tarantino’s controversial portrayal of Bruce Lee. “I’ve never met [Tarantino]. I don’t know what his issues are with my father. Clearly, he thinks my father is cool, because he has borrowed from him quite a bit. But at the same time, I think he has been told a lot of stories by people who have encountered my father and had a negative reaction.

Some people say imitation is the highest form of flattery, but what if the offspring of a deceased legend is uncomfortable with how their parent is represented by those intending to honor the dead? Shannon Lee, the daughter of martial arts legend Bruce Lee and sister of The Crow actor Brandon Lee, is opening up about the dearly departed and how their legacy continues through cult classics and high-profile director’s passion projects. Speaking with the U.K.-based news outlet The Telegraph, Shannon says she could use some clarification on Quentin Tarantino’s use of her father’s legacy.

During a recent interview with the Associated Press to promote “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Martin Scorsese was asked to weigh in on Quentin Tarantino’s impending retirement from feature filmmaking. Tarantino has said for many years that he plans to retire after his 10th movie because he wants to leave behind a strong and tightly-curated filmography. Tarantino is now developing his 10th feature, “The Movie Critic,” which he plans to be his last.
“I just don’t know,” Scorsese said when the topic of Tarantino’s retirement got brought up. When the AP reporter asked Scorsese if he’s just built differently than Tarantino, Scorsese answered, “I am.”
“He’s a writer,” Scorsese explained. “It’s a different thing. I come up with stories. I get attracted to stories through other people. All different means, different ways. And so I think it’s a different process…I respect writers and I wish I could.

As it turns out, what makes a good trailer does not necessarily make a good movie. Or, rather, what makes a hilarious and debauched fake trailer, one sandwiched between Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino at their most gonzo, does not automatically translate to modern horror cinema. This is the realization that allowed Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving slasher movie to transition from a ghoulish gag 16 years ago to the potential holiday horror staple of today, and one that is coming home just in time for Turkey Day.

Quentin Tarantino had a single epic film in mind when he set out to create what became Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and its follow-up.
The lead character of the Bride originated in conversations between Tarantino and star Uma Thurman during their first collaboration in 1993. “I came up with the idea of doing Kill Bill on the set of Pulp Fiction with Uma,” Tarantino told The Hollywood Reporter in 2003. “‘Bang Bang’ set to Uma for the opening credits was in my mind [back then],” the director said of using Cher’s song “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” to open the film, although he later opted for the Nancy Sinatra cover.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 centers on Thurman’s erstwhile assassin seeking revenge against her former team and their leader, Bill (David Carradine), after they tried to kill her and her unborn child on her wedding day. Tarantino envisioned Warren Beatty for...

It was eight years ago this week that Arrow kicked off what would be known as its “Mystery Grave” season, seeing as the opener ended with a “Six Months Later” flash-forward that saw Barry Allen arrive late for the funeral of someone clearly close to Oliver Queen.

Quentin Tarantino recruited star Rosario Dawson for his 2007 feature Death Proof. While filming, the actor saw a link between Death Proof and a former Brad Pitt movie that allowed her to realize an old fantasy.

Dawson was determined to star in Tarantino’s 2007 Grindhouse feature no matter what. Death Proof saw Kurt Russell playing a serial killer who murdered unsuspecting victims with his car. Dawson was tapped to audition for one of the many women Russell’s character would target. Tarantino and his Grindhouse partner Robert Rodriguez would test Dawson out for the role. But initially, Dawson felt she left a pretty poor impression on the filmmakers with her audition.

Many of Quentin Tarantino’s most iconic characters sit firmly in the morally gray areas of humanity, but the filmmaker steered into reprehensible villainy with Calvin Candie in Django Unchained. Despite DiCaprio’s discomfort with the role, the actor fully committed to depicting this sadistic slave owner with palpable intensity. In one of his standout scenes, DiCaprio got some inside the role that he injured himself while delivering a monologue.

Douda! Douda! Douda!
Never has one character's name come out the mouths of other characters than Douda Perry's name did on The Chi Season 6 Episode 2.
We will discuss events from the episode at length, so if you have yet to watch it, beware of spoilers.
Douda had been digging his talons into Chicago's finest, and it was heartbreaking to see how money could render someone a god walking among men such that they could murder with impunity.
Douda has gotten his hooks into Emmett, where everything is playing out like it did with Brandon, and we know how that ended.
Douda sees the ambition and drive in the young man, but instead of nurturing it appropriately, he manipulates it.
The hour saw Douda take over every aspect of Emmett's life, and Emmett couldn't say no, being the nice boy he was. And even when he tried to, Douda had his half-cracked smile,...

Quentin Tarantino has floated around ideas for franchises like James Bond and Star Trek. It turns out, according to Eddie Murphy himself, he also might have wanted in on Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop series.

Murphy had been mulling over the possibility of a Beverly Hills Cop sequel for years. The series’ last film, 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III, was one that many felt wasn’t the franchise at its best. Murphy agreed, which gave the comedian extra motivation to see a proper sequel to the third movie.
“I don’t think it’s gonna happen in March, but it is gonna be in Detroit. And before it happens, they’ve got to get that script right. That movie has to be right,” he once said in an interview with the Playboy (via Av Club). “The third Beverly Hills Cop was garbage.

[This story contains spoilers from Justified: City Primeval‘s two-episode premiere.]
From The Wonder Years and Early Edition to Justified old and new, you’ve likely seen Michael Dinner’s name on your TV screen for as long as you can remember. Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that F. Murray Abraham is entering the “The White Lotus” episode “Abductions” as his 2023 Emmy Award submission for Best Drama Supporting Actor. “Abductions” aired on December 4, 2022, and is the sixth episode of the HBO drama’s second season. It’s the 12th episode of the series overall.
In “Abductions,” after admitting their marriage needs work, Ethan (Will Sharpe) grows suspicious of Harper (Aubrey Plaza) and Cam (Theo James). As they look forward to a lavish party at Quentin’s (Tom Hollander) Palermo estate, Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) gives Portia (Haley Lu Richardson) a hazy warning about Jack (Leo Woodall). Meanwhile, the Di Grassos head out in search of distant Sicilian relatives, but Dominic (Michael Imperioli) bristles when Albie (Adam Dimarco) invites Lucia (Simona Tabasco) along as their translator. “Abductions” was written and directed by series creator-showrunner Mike White.

For “Justified” fans, the wait for the show’s return to the small screen has been long but worthwhile. The Timothy Olyphant-led neo-Western went off the air in 2015, but the new limited series “Justified: City Primeval” has been hailed as a fitting revival of the Elmore Leonard property. While Olyphant’s return as Raylan Givens was the main attraction, new characters including Boyd Holbrook’s Clement Mansell have gone a long way towards expanding the show’s mythology.
In a new conversation with Michael Shannon published in Interview Magazine, Holbrook recalled being offered the role by longtime “Justified” fan Quentin Tarantino, who considered directing an episode of the limited series. While Tarantino ultimately left the project, Holbrook became hooked on the material and remained attached.

It’s been eight months since the latest Sight and Sound Best Films of All Time poll was released, and Paul Schrader is still annoyed by how quickly “Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles” ascended to the top spot on the list.
In a new interview with Sight and Sound, Schrader once again voiced his discomfort with Chantal Akerman’s 1975 film being named the greatest film of all time. While the “Master Gardener” has not taken issue with the quality of the film, he sees its prominent spot on the list as the result of an insincere attempt to highlight more female filmmakers.
“They did two things to rig the ballot, and a third thing happened societally,” Schrader said of the latest poll. “The first was that they vastly expanded the contributors. You’ve got people who are not actual film critics weighing in on a critical poll, and the...

Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" marks another groundbreaking entry into an already incredible canon of work, but could it be one of his last? Some of the director's contemporaries like Quentin Tarantino have taken a less-is-more approach to their filmography, vowing to restrict themselves to a certain number of films or stop directing by a certain age. Others, like Martin Scorsese, have decided to work for as long as they can and continue to put out new projects far past retirement age. As for which of these two routes Nolan will choose, he still isn't so sure, but he sees the good in both options.
"The truth is, I understand both points of view," Nolan told CinemaBlend. "It's addictive to tell stories in cinema. It's a lot of hard work, but it's very fun. It's something you feel driven to do, and so it's a little hard to imagine voluntarily stopping.

Samuel L. Jackson told The Times last year that he deserved to win the Oscar for best supporting actor over Martin Landau (“Ed Wood”) at the 1995 Academy Awards. In a new interview with Vulture, the actor said he was robbed of a second chance to win an Oscar just a couple years later with Joel Schumacher’s 1996 legal drama “A Time to Kill,” co-starring Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock. The John Grisham adaptation starred Jackson as a man on trial in Mississippi for killing the two men who raped his daughter.
“In ‘A Time to Kill,’ when I kill those guys, I kill them because my daughter needs to know that those guys are not on the planet anymore and they will never hurt her again — that I will do anything to protect her,” Jackson said. “That’s how I played that character throughout. Ahead of the release of his 12th film, Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan has chimed in about Quentin Tarantino’s oft-discussed and -debated move to end his feature directing career after 10 movies. And while many of us think Qt would defy the odds that he sees crash filmmakers’ careers in their waning years, Nolan understands where his fellow cinephile is coming from.
Speaking on CinemaBlend’s ReelBlend podcast (via Variety), Christopher Nolan suggests that Quentin Tarantino’s encyclopedic knowledge of cinema is where the decision formed. “Quentin’s point has always been that — and he never, very graciously, he’s never specific about the films he’s talking about or whatever — but he’s looking at some of the work done by filmmakers in later years and feeling that if it can’t live up to the heyday, it would be better if it didn’t exist. Christopher Nolan admires Quentin Tarantino’s approach to how he plans to bow out of his filmmaking career.
Speaking on the “ReelBlend” podcast (via CinemaBlend), the “Oppenheimer” director addressed Tarantino’s plans to retire after his 10th and final film. Tarantino has said his last feature will be “The Movie Critic,” set in 1970s Los Angeles. Tarantino has long said he will stop after 10 movies, meaning he will be just over 60 years old when he closes his career. Meanwhile, Scorsese is about to release his latest movie, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” at the age of 80 and has no plans to stop.
“The truth is, I understand both points of view,” Nolan said of the filmmakers’ disparate approaches to aging and filmmaking. “It’s addictive to tell stories in cinema. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s very fun. It’s something you feel driven to do,...

Christopher Nolan understands Quentin Tarantino’s impulse to retire – but also respects filmmakers who continue to make art well into their old age.
The “Oppenheimer” filmmaker recently told Cinema Blend he understands “both points of view” in the discussion of impact versus longevity. “It’s addictive to tell stories in cinema. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s very fun. It’s something you feel driven to do, and so it’s a little hard to imagine voluntarily stopping,” he said.
But, Nolan added, Tarantino’s long-discussed plans to retire after his 10th(ish) film make sense.

Christopher Nolan recently told the “ReelBlend” podcast (via CinemaBlend) that he understands Quentin Tarantino’s decision to retire from feature filmmaking after his upcoming 10th directorial effort, titled “The Movie Critic.” Tarantino has spoken for years about his plan to retire, saying he wants to leave behind a consistently strong and tightly curated body of work.
“And do you believe him?” Nolan asked the podcast hosts regarding Tarantino’s planned retirement.
There’s no reason not to believe Tarantino at this time. Every time he’s dropped details about his next movie, “The Movie Critic,” he has reminded fans it will be his last directorial feature while also stressing that just because he is retiring from filmmaking doesn’t mean he can’t write books, plays, television series and more. Christopher Nolan is one of the most lauded directors in Hollywood with Oppenheimer set to drop in theaters this week. The filmmaker is opening up about where he stands on the notion of retiring and if he would ever make another superhero movie.
During a recent interview, Nolan was asked about his future in filmmaking and how he sees himself in the years ahead. On one side, Quentin Tarantino said he would be retiring following his tenth film, while Martin Scorsese has continued making films into his 80s but recently acknowledged he’s getting older.

Quentin Tarantino found inspiration from a lot of sources when he became a filmmaker. But seeing what Sylvester Stallone did with Rocky had a significant impact on him as a youth.

Sylvester Stallone has been very candid about the difficulties and challenges he faced getting Rocky to the big screen. Stallone wrote the Rocky script in 3 days out of desperation before bargaining with the studio to star in the feature. It was a success story that motivated many in the film industry such as Matt Damon.
It also had a hand in inspiring Tarantino’s own passions. So much so that he cheered Stallone on when Rocky was nominated for best picture.

Okay ramblers, let’s get rambling… In the mid-90s, there were few directors more exciting than Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. They helped kickstart a wave of movie nerds who’d be calling their own shots and making millions for the studio system; suddenly it seemed like being able to endlessly quote Martin Scorsese or John Carpenter movies meant you might get a shot at sitting in the director’s chair. At the turn of the year, HeyUGuys were lucky enough to head to Paris to interview some of the biggest stars of the French film industry, ahead of theatrical releases in the UK across the year. One interview, with talented actress Anaïs Demoustier, actually covered two bases, as she was promoting both Smoking Causes Coughing and November. Two films that couldn’t be more different from one another. Naturally we discussed the diversity of roles, and her ambitions in the industry. And she also talks about how Lara Croft became an unlikely inspiration…
The very fact I am speaking to you today about Smoking Causes Coughing and November is symbolic of your diverse choices as an actress, a performer who is difficult to define. Is that something you do consciously, trying to find different roles, and different projects, or do you just follow the best stories, and see where it takes you?...

Quentin Tarantino recruited many notable actors for his third feature film Jackie Brown. The movie saw him teaming up with performers he’d never collaborated with before but always admired like Michael Keaton. But when Keaton initially heard about his role in Jackie Brown, he confided it wasn’t what he hoped it’d be at first.
Michael Keaton was initially disappointed with his role in ‘Jackie Brown’ Michael Keaton | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
For Tarantino, Keaton was the only actor he had in mind who could play the part of agent Ray Nicolette in Jackie Brown. Tarantino was determined to recruit the comic star for the movie, but Keaton didn’t share the filmmaker’s enthusiasm. Originally, Keaton turned down the offer. Tarantino believed he did so because the Batman star doubted he was a good fit for the Jackie Brown character.
But Keaton had other reservations when considering Jackie Brown.

The internet of 2023 has transformed Wes Anderson from director to design aesthetic through countless generative AI videos and an enduring TikTok trend mimicking his distinct visual style. To watch Anderson’s actual output in Asteroid City is to realize that boiling him down into snackable social media content cannot fully capture his magic. From the whimsical wonder and meticulous mise-en-scène, there’s no replacement for the real thing.
Asteroid City depicts a theater company staging a teleplay at a 1955 Junior Stargazer convention in the titular desert town. For Anderson, the premise is a springboard for crafting frames within frames, which he then proceeds to summarily collapse. The film upholds and undermines his signature all at once. Yet all these crisp compositions also need a committed cast of actors placed within them, delivering his droll dialogue with amusing affect. No, we didn’t ask Leo Woodall about the “scene” in “The White Lotus” season two. Maybe we should have. Maybe we should have remembered the fact Woodall’s character, Jack, was spotted by Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge), having, um, intercourse with his supposed “uncle,” Quentin (Tom Hollander). But frankly, it didn’t come up. Maybe we got a little sidetracked talking about the Coachella and Glastonbury music festivals instead.

Los Angeles, May 29 (Ians) Director Quentin Tarantino is facing a claim from a strip club manager called NorCal Lowlife he once splashed out $10,000 to lick.
Lowlife – also known as Page Rad – was apparently a senior worker at Hollywood nightspot Crazy Girls, and told the tale about the ‘Pulp Fiction’ director, who is said to have a foot fetish as he often lingers on his leading ladies’ toes in his flicks, on a podcast called ‘Get in the Car’, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
He said when Quentin apparently visited the club, without specifying when, the filmmaker requested a VIP room and the company of the dancer with the “biggest t***” and “biggest ass” there.
Lowlife said he went to a security room and watched the action on CCTV, adding: “He’s sitting down, she’s about to do her little… take her top off. And he gets up, throws her on the f****** seat,...

It’s hard to imagine Quentin Tarantino directing a franchise movie, but he has come close several times. After Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino considered directing a James Bond movie based on Casino Royale, but it didn’t work out.
While speaking with Deadline, Quentin Tarantino explained why his James Bond movie didn’t happen. “We reached out to the Ian Fleming people, and they had suggested that they still own the rights to Casino Royale,” Tarantino said. “And that’s what I wanted to do after Pulp Fiction was do my version of Casino Royale, and it would’ve taken place in the ’60s and wasn’t about a series of Bond movies. We would have cast an actor and be one and done. So I thought we could do this.“

Though virtually all of Quentin Tarantino’s nine movies have been original stories — only “Jackie Brown” was adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel “Rum Punch” — the director and obsessive cinephile has kicked the tires on some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises over the years. From Marvel projects to an R-rated “Star Trek” movie, Tarantino loves to flirt with opportunities to work with his favorite characters. And sometimes, it seems like the only thing he loves more than making movies is talking about the movies he almost made.
In a new interview with Deadline, he recalled his failed attempt to put his own Tarantino-esque spin on the James Bond novel “Casino Royale” years before the Daniel Craig adaptation came out.
