The “Abbott Elementary” Emmy winner alleged that multiple network executives witnessed a “famous TV judge” assault her at a corporate function but did not penalize the assailant due to worries of “bad press.”

A sprawling exploration of a progressive coalition that includes the inner-city-focused Urban League and Latinx-focused UnidosUS, Gumbo Coalition is the latest picture by Barbara Kopple. The legendary documentarian explores the power of organizing and finding common ground, even in one limited situation with the Trump administration. The first part of Kopple’s sprawling and insightful film feels like it’s arriving a few years too late, while the second half is more forward-looking as progress continues––the Urban League and UnidiosUSA hit the ground to spread the word about voting and ultimately get Biden elected.
Gumbo is usually a delicious stew of parts others might disregard as scraps. The film, in that sense, bounces between moments and various geographic locations while offering a candid character study of the Urban League president Marc Morial and UnidosUS leader Janet Murguia. At times this can be frustrating—the film highlights myriad interconnected...

In Barbara Kopple’s 40-plus year career as one of America’s greatest documentary directors, she has won Academy Awards for the seminal 1976 documentary “Harlan County, U.S.A.” a portrait of a Kentucky coal mining town in crisis, and for “American Dream,” a 1990 examination of a meatpackers’ strike at a Hormel plant in Austin, Minn. A pioneer of cinema vérité that got her start with the Maysles brothers (directors of “Gimme Shelter” and “Grey Gardens”), she was most recently nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy award for “Desert One,” a doc about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. Kopple will be a keynote speaker at Variety and Rolling Stone’s Truth Seekers Summit on Thursday. She spoke to Variety about her decades-long career in nonfiction filmmaking.

Washington -- Just before the March on Washington in 1963, President John F. Kennedy summoned six top civil rights leaders to the White House to talk about his fears that civil rights legislation he was moving through Congress might be undermined if the march turned violent.
Whitney Young Jr. cut through the president's uncertainty with three questions: "President Kennedy, which side are you on? Are you on the side of George Wallace of Alabama? Or are you on the side of justice?"
One of those leaders, John Lewis, later a longtime congressman from Georgia, tells the story of Young's boldness in "The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights," a documentary airing during Black History Month on the PBS series "Independent Lens" and shown in some community theaters.
In the civil rights struggle, Young was overshadowed by his larger-than-life peer, Martin Luther King Jr. But Young's penetration of white-dominated corporate boardrooms...
