Joan was a British filmmaker and conservationist. She was the daughter
of Edmund Thorpe, a British coffee farmer and safari guide. Joan and
Alan Root (an amateur filmmaker) met and married in 1961. Since then they
have made 10 documentary films on wildlife. They divorced in 1981. On
January 12, 2006, assailants identified as an ex-employee and a poacher
fired rounds from their AK-47 rifle into Joan Root's farmhouse striking
her twice in the leg and once in the hip. She died of massive
bleeding.
