Melissa McCarthy’s “The Happytime Murders” grossed $950,000 at the Thursday box office from 2,500 locations.
In comparison, McCarthy’s last film, “Life of the Party,” earned $700,000 and went on to make $17 million on its opening weekend. “The Boss” grossed $985,000 at the Thursday previews in 2016, but finished with $23.6 million. Independent trackers anticipate “The Happytime Murders” to gross between $13 million and $15 million this weekend.
Here’s the official synopsis for the film: No Sesame. All Street. “The Happytime Murders” is a filthy comedy set in the underbelly of Los Angeles where puppets and humans coexist. Two clashing detectives with a shared secret, one human (McCarthy) and one puppet, are forced to work together again to solve the brutal murders of the former cast of a beloved classic puppet television show. Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale and Elizabeth Banks also star.

Believe it or not, The Happytime Murders isn’t the dirtiest film of the year. Sure, the Trailers suggested something so raunchy your mind almost shut down, but that’s merely part of this flick. There’s also an actual murder mystery to solve. Opening this week, it offers up something interesting for the late summer. Reviews haven’t been good, but I’ll stand out on a limb and state that I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It’s not going to win any awards and probably is on the forgettable side, all things told, but it makes you laugh. If you like raunchy humor and puppets, you’ll like what’s being offered up here. As you’ve gathered by now, the film is a mix of puppetry and humans, thrown into a comedic detective tale. Here is the official synopsis: “In the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles,...

Back on Friday, a Red Band Trailer dropped for an incredibly unique looking movie. The film in question is The Happytime Murders, which has been long in development. Coming from Brian Henson, it’s a comedy involving humans and puppets. It always sounded like if The Muppets were in a dirty version of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and now we know. This Trailer is just the dirtiest thing, and hilarious as well. You’ll be able to see the Trailer below, and fair warning, it’s incredibly not safe for work, but first, we’ll dive into the flick a bit. It sure looks one of a kind. This film is an action/crime comedy, mixing humans and puppets. IMDb has two plot descriptions, which are as follows: “When the puppet cast of an ’80s children’s TV show begins to get murdered one by one, a disgraced Lapd detective-turned-private...

Why Watch? It’s not hard to imagine why this short film is going around like free whiskey. It’s shot with an eye for detail and interesting angles while pulling off some difficult scenes in difficult territory. Make no mistake: shooting in water is really, really hard. But as screenwriter John August points out, director Dee Austin Robertson had access to a boat, so she utilized that unique connection/setting in order to break a few rules and create something that looks far more expensive than it actually is. In the movie, Eric (Blaise Miller) sets sail alone on his birthday, ruminating on a relationship gone to pot and drinking liberally. Fortunately, there’s a storm heading his way. Eric Goes West is a success on every level. The script features some simple twists on convention (particular his new friend) with a healthy dose of cynical comedy. It’s not exactly morbid. Not...

Here's our first look at Brian Henson's R-rated puppet film, The Happytime Murders. This is a piece of official production art that shows us what the visual style and tone of the noir murder mystery is going to be like. I love what I'm seeing; this looks like it could be a great movie. The image comes along with a new synopsis for the movie as well.
In a world where puppets co-exist with humans as second class citizens, puppet private eye and disgraced ex-cop, Phil Phillips, is hot on the trail of the serial killer who murdered his brother and is now targeting the cast members of the famous 80s television show, “The Happytime Gang.” As the killings continue, Phil’s former flame, Jenny, is next on the list. Another project that's been simmering since 2008 is now coming to a boil as the first bits of concept art from Happytime Murders have slipped online. Check 'em out, or we'll kick the stuffing out of you!
Happytime Murders is a comedy thriller written by Todd Berger and directed by Brian Henson (son of Jim).
Happytime takes place in a world where humans and puppets coexist, with the puppets viewed as second-class citizens. When the puppet cast of 1980s children's TV show "The Happytime Gang" begin to get murdered one by one, a disgraced Lapd detective-turned-private eye puppet -- with a drinking problem, no less -- takes the case with his former human partner. Think Avenue Q meets L.A. Confidential.
Berger penned the script from a story he wrote with Dee Austin Robertson. The project has been in development at the Jim Henson Co. since 2008, when it picked up the script as a spec.

We now have some proof that Katherine Heigl (Bride Of Chucky, Knocked Up, "Grey's Anatomy") is returning to her genre roots with these stills from the Jim Henson Co.'s The Happytime Murders. Right now it looks like a much darker take on Roger Rabbit. The Happytime Murders doesn.t sound like a project we.d immediately associate with Katherine Heigl. For starters it's not a soapy rom-com with a generically amateurish nursery rhyme title (One For the Money, The Ugly Truth). And yet, Deadline claims that Heigl is in "advanced negotiations" to play the lead role in what sounds like a remarkably clever and imaginative murder noir, so we may see her in Happytime Murders sometime soon. The premise of Happytime Murders is deliciously gonzo. Screenwriter Todd Berger (Kung Fu Panda 2) pens from an idea he cooked up with Dee Austin Robertson. It takes place in a fictionalized world where humans and puppets live hand-in-felt-hand. When a serial killers wipes out the cast of a popular .80s kids show, a disgraced detective (the role Heigl.s circling) steps forward to investigate the gruesome murders. Now, if I.m being honest, this sounds far...

The puppet movie-loving public -- which we're certain includes almost everyone who reads Moviefone -- was thrilled to see the initial report that Brian Henson, scion to the house that Kermit built, would be returning to feature filmmaking for the first time since 1996's 'Muppet Treasure Island,' with the puppet noir film 'The Happytime Murders.'
The movie was picked up by Lionsgate and is slated to begin production in January -- and Vulture reports that Cameron Diaz has been offered a starring role. With the film making real progress toward leaving behind its "risky project" description and actually being made, there's also been a lot of speculation about the project based on its one-paragraph synopsis:

In an act that almost feels like it should have the name "Joss Whedon" attached to it, the Jim Henson Company has announced the development of a new film project called The Happytime Murders. This original film noir murder mystery will fall under the company's Henson Alternative banner, a division that develops projects not intended for children (such as Puppet Up! and Tinseltown). From writer Todd Berger:
"In a world where humans and puppets live together (not exactly in harmony), the puppet cast of an '80s children's TV show called The Happytime Gang begins to get muderered one by one. It's then up to a disgraced puppet Lapd detective turned private eye to take the case. Based on a story Dee Austin Robertson and Todd Berger, the original feature film will feature the well-known Henson style of irreverence and parody while presenting a unique twist on the film noir genre.
