This week, the music world mourned the death of Steve Harwell, a founding member and frontman of Smash Mouth whose distinctive delivery helped turn “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “All Star” into multi-generational pop hits. Until his retirement in 2021, he and bassist Paul Delisle were the two consistent members of the band’s lineup since their 1994 inception. And while guitarist Greg Camp served as the songwriter behind the group’s best-known tunes, Harwell was its iconic voice — in more ways than one.

Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell has died at the age of 56.
According to Smash Mouth’s manager, Robert Hayes, Harwell “passed peacefully and comfortably” at his home in Boise, Idaho on Monday, September 4th.
Harwell recently began hospice care due to liver failure. Additionally, he suffered from cardiomyopathy and Wernicke’s encephalopathy.
Born January 9th, 1967, in Santa Clara, California, Steven Scott Harwell actually began his career as a rapper. His group Freedom of Speech (F.O.S.) recorded one song, “Big Black Boots,” that earned them some local radio play and scored Harwell a manager before he set his sights on alternative rock.
Harwell formed Smash Mouth in 1994, teaming with drummer Kevin Coleman, guitarist Greg Camp, and bassist Paul De Lisle. Their debut album, Fush Mu Yang, arrived three years later, and featured the single “Walkin’ on the Sun,” which hit No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart.

Smash Mouth’s “All Star” has followed you incessantly for the last two decades. If you’re under the age of 30, it’s a part of the fabric of your life as much as it’s a strand of the DNA that keeps the internet funny and weird. But before “All Star” was an inescapable hit, or the anthem for a misanthropic, titular green ogre in Dreamworks’ mega-hit Shrek, or the inspiration for countless memes on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and TikTok today, it began as a chance for Smash Mouth to prove themselves.

To be honest I don’t know as I’ve ever seen calculators that make such musical sounds in my life. But that was definitely Hey Now, You’re A Rockstar, by Smashmouth. The most I ever remember of a calculator was the high-pitched whistle I made when I had to shell out a whopping $100 bucks for a graphing calculator that I used for one term and never saw again until I moved. Happy “Star Wars” Day! Jimmy Fallon is celebrating the geek-tastic sci-fi holiday with a little Smash Mouth. The busy bees over at “The Tonight Show” edited “Star Wars” film footage to make characters sing the band’s 1999 hit, “All Star.” All those hours of hard work made churned out less than a 1-minute video — but it’s a fun one. From the tune’s famous opening lyrics through its catchy chorus, Star Wars favorites like Yoda, Jar Jar Binks, Finn (John Boyega), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and more starred in the clip.

The answer to the eternal question: What ever happened to the director of ‘Mystery Men’?
The first thing to notice about Kinka Usher’s Twitter account — which we’ll assume is the real deal, even in the absence of a blue check mark — is its profile description: “I directed the movie that actually made All Star by Smash Mouth popular.” As far as legacies go, we can agree this would be an ignoble one, assuming that’s all there was to it. The description does not clarify the movie in question however.
So then, the second thing to notice, after a bit of scrolling, is the title of said movie: Mystery Men. The film, based on marginal superhero characters from an obscure comic book (where my Flaming Carrot fans at?) and released in 1999, stars Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, Janeane Garofalo, and an almost literally unbelievable list of others. Smash Mouth is indeed heard on the soundtrack...

There is no chance you see anything weirder today than what I’m about to show you right now. As many of us have been following the Bill O’Reilly firing saga, it seems that we’re just too focused on the details. I mean why focus on the fact that O’Reilly sexually harassed women? Why even bother talking about all the times he disrespected his colleagues, belittled them, and acted above everyone else he worked with? We’re definitely missing the big picture. What we should have been doing this entire time was focusing on how we could incorporate Bill O’Reilly into one

If you have any kind of musical ear then you will appreciate this mashup more than most. Typically when two songs are mixed together it’s almost for the “hell of it.” What I mean is, not that much thought goes into the rhythm, tone, actual melodies of songs. We just want to see what it’s like to mix two songs. And that’s perfectly fine and in most instances, entertaining. However, for all you music lovers out there I think you’ll find this mashup to be a step above the rest. Who knew that Smash Mouth’s “All-Star” and Eminem’s “My Name

I’ve enjoyed Ethan Embry’s on-screen work for a long time now, and it’s been great to see him keeping busy these days—from his work on Grace and Frankie, to his appearance on the season 6 premiere of The Walking Dead, to his fantastic performances in genre fare like Cheap Thrills, Late Phases, The Guest, and his recent role in Sean Byrne’s The Devil’s Candy, which arrives in select theaters and on VOD on Friday, March 17th from IFC Midnight.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak in depth with Embry about his work on the film, and he discussed the appeal of playing a conflicted father who will stop at nothing to keep his family safe. Embry also chatted about working with Byrne and how he hopes fans appreciate the way the filmmaker’s vision for The Devil’s Candy represents all the metal aficionados out there.

Since I spend most of my time writing about movies and television, I don't have a ton of time to keep up with meme culture. But apparently there's been an influx of memes involving Bee Movie recently (actually, this might have been going on for years, as far as I know), and PBS Idea Channel is here to explain why that particular movie has become a go-to film for meme-ificiation. And why do people consistently use "Smash Mouth" or "Smooth" in ridiculous meme videos these days? This video tries to get to the bottom of that, too. I found the results to be enlightening, and in a nice twist, this video itself has become an entry in the bizarre Bee Movie meme subculture because it's the entire movie, but every time the word "bee" is said, the video essay plays in its entirety. Luckily for those of us who only...

The Smash Mouth meme-production mill does not rest. With each day comes a new iteration, a new version of “All Star,” a new official tweet plumbing the depths of tastelessness. Why, was it just two weeks ago when the band commemorated the deaths of Carrie Fisher and George Michael by slapping its logo on top of publicity photos of the dead celebs? Yes, it was just two weeks ago when they did that. Several days later they had recovered from the social media firestorm and were earnestly congratulating a fan for performing cunnilingus.

You know the drill: An upcoming animated movie releases a trailer, filled with pop songs (maybe its a current hit; maybe it's a Smash Mouth song), wacky animals and recognizable celebrity voices. It drops a few kid-friendly snarky lines here and there – the dog/cat/emu that just skid face-first into a door? It, like, meant to do that! Then it's all over but the first-weekend grosses. Occasionally, a sociological Mickey gets slipped into these filmic equivalents of fizzy drinks; seriously, who'd have thought that Zootopia would double as one...

It ain’t no joke. We have the success of the breezy 1997 single “Walkin’ On The Sun” to thank (or curse) for bringing Smash Mouth to prominence. And now the YouTube channel DoctorTchock is giving the song an even more auspicious legacy, this time in classic films. The channel—which seems to have been created for this express purpose—has uploaded a whole collection of famous movie endings with a Smash Mouth twist. The more incongruous they are, the better. For instance, The Usual Suspects video almost works if only because both the song and the film have a distinctive ’90s vibe. Casablanca, on the other hand, is a delightful mix of classic cinema and anachronistic pop rock.
DoctorTchock is really committed to the bit and has uploaded a whole bunch of Smash Mouth-themed videos, with more potentially to come. It’s hard to tell whether they get funnier...

Stephen Colbert poked fun at Ticketmaster Thursday night after the company released their list of not-so-appetizing free concerts, the result of a long-standing, just-settled class action lawsuit.
"Ticketmaster is settling a class action lawsuit for overcharging customers, and as part of the settlement, they're giving out $5 million dollars in free concert tickets. Obviously, minus a $3.5 million dollar processing fee," Colbert said.
Like everyone else who logged into their Ticketmaster account to find free ticket vouchers waiting for them, that excitement soon turned into disappointment for Colbert when he saw the...

On April 20, Limp Bizkit was supposed to give a concert at a Sunoco in Dayton, Ohio. At least, according to Facebook. "We come all the way from West Milton to see Limp Bizkit. Live action," said fan Randy Ray, just one of the 8,9000 confirmed attendees (on Facebook) who showed up, ultimately just to be disappointed, according to Wrgt. Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst issued a statement on Twitter declaring the concert a hoax, but it didn't stop fans from showing up - many were simply there for the fun of it, although a few were hoping for a last-minute surprise: "Where you at?...

Your daily dose of nostalgia is brought to you by your favorite Disney characters and a side of Smash Mouth. Simba, Woody, Gaston, Tinkerbelle, and the rest of the fam join forces to bring you an adorable (and hella creative) version of Smash Mouth's famous "All Star." Can anyone remind us why we all liked that song? Only the heavens know how long it took to put all of those clips together, but we give the creator some major props. Thanks to YouTuber James Covenant, we all have something to distract us from whatever soul-sucking activity we're trying to avoid right now. While the majority of the clips are Disney gems from back in the day, the video does feature snippets from Frozen and Lilo...

Needless to say, Masters of the Universe isn't exactly high art. The long-defunct Mattel franchise -- which began as a toy line first before being spun off into a popular Saturday morning cartoon series in the 1980s -- was a silly diversion for the under-10 set that was perfectly suited to being served up with heavy doses of sugary breakfast cereal. And yet so was Transformers, which didn't keep it from being turned into a multi-billion-dollar live-action film franchise that cut across demographic barriers. Still, it hasn't been quite so easy for He-Man -- Masters' blond-locked, impossibly-muscled central hero -- on the big screen. The first effort at a live-action film, 1987's Masters of the Universe, was beset by numerous production problems, a lead actor who could barely deliver dialogue, and ridiculous contractual stipulations from Mattel that inadvertently led to charges of Star Wars copycatism. While it certainly had its charms,...

If you haven't been living under a rock or several rocks that spell out "I don't care about hip-hop Instagram feuds," then you probably know what's been going on with 50 Cent and Meek Mill. Meek Mill sang a song about 50 Cent being gay, and 50 Cent is Instagramming pictures of poop with Meek Mill's face on them. Welcome to 2016! So all this being said and done, the world asked: What does San Jose rock band Smash Mouth think of the 50 Cent–Meek Mill feud? Smash Mouth has spoken, er tweeted, and said: "@50cent Dude you're an American Icon, why lower yourself to even comment on @MeekMill." 50 would be smart to listen to Smash Mouth, because somebody once told Smash Mouth the world was gonna roll him, and now the world is rolling 50 Cent. Don't lower yourself, 50! Like when someone threw bread at Smash Mouth...
