After the massive critical and commercial success of “A Silent Voice” (2016), it seemed like director Naoko Yamada could do no wrong and was poised for huge things. It may have been strange for some then that her next directorial project would be tied to the “Sound! Euphonium” anime series, which Yamada had previously worked on as series unit director under Tatsuya Ishihara. It could almost be seen as a regression, as Yamada's first two features, “K-on! The Movie” (2011) and “Tamako Love Story” (2014), were also based on pre-existing anime series. Yet whether a fan of “Sound! He started off by revealing the details of when the discussion about anime adaptation came up. Asano felt that if he missed the opportunity of letting Dead Dead Demon’s De De De De Destruction get an anime adaptation, he would never be involved in an anime ever.

Sumikko Gurashi began life as a brand of kawaii characters (think Hello Kitty and other Sanrio mascots). However, in 2019, the little guys made the jump from plush dolls to the silver screen in “Sumikko Gurashi The Movie – The Pop-up Book and the Secret Child”. With a third film on the way later this year, it is fair to say these creatures made a successful leap to the big screen. However, this review will examine the sequel “Sumikko Gurashi: The Little Wizard In The Blue Moonlight”, featuring Takahiro Omori directing and screenplay by Reiko Yoshida

Water, as a conduit for romance and spirituality, has been en vogue as of late in Japanese feature animation. Entries in this wet subgenre, where young characters grapple with torrential rain and oceans to dazzling effect, as well as life lessons submerged in nature-based metaphors, include Makoto Shinkai’s box office hit “Weathering With You,” Ayumu Watanabe’s upcoming “Children of the Sea,” and Masaaki Yuasa’s mermaid tale “Lu Over the Wall.”
Returning to that liquid magic, Yuasa, who produces films through his own company Science Saru, makes a new splash with his third feature in three years “Ride Your Wave,” written by Reiko Yoshida, who also penned recent anime standouts “Okko’s Inn,” “A Silent Voice,” and “Liz and the Blue Bird.” Notwithstanding the saturation of H2O-fueled teen movies, the director-screenwriter pair filter a love story through an oddball premise addressing heroism and perseverance with robust notes of graphic originality.

Following up on Netflix’s release of his series Devilman Crybaby, Gkids has picked up three of his films for distribution this year. One of these, Lu Over the Wall, demonstrates everything that makes Yuasa one of the best contemporary anime filmmakers. It’s an energetic, frequently hilarious, always visually riveting ride.

This year’s New York Asian Film Festival was graced with the North American premiere of a film almost three decades in the making. The critically acclaimed and three-time Eisner Award winning manga, Buddha, from Osamu Tezuka, the “Godfather of Anime”, has been given the big screen treatment from animation house Toei Company. Broken down into a planned trilogy from its fourteen volumes of unique and gritty storytelling spanning Siddhartha Gautama’s birth until his transformation into “the Enlightened One”, this first installment—entitled Tezuka Osamu no budda: Akai sabaku yo! Utsukushiku [Osamu Tezuka’s Buddha: The Great Departure]—is a large-scale epic of revenge, war, friendship, spirituality, and a love for nature only someone as one with the earth as Buddha is could cultivate at such an early age.
