Fancy a free film and a pork pie? Barnsley filmmakers Rebecca and Dean Sills have made a new documentary. More below…
A Barnsley documentary shot over three days is set to commemorate an important anniversary this month, as the 28-minute Regeneration heads to the town’s Highgate Club on 25th April.
Shot and edited over the summer of 2023, the film became an unexpected success on the Amazon DVD charts, shooting up as high as #9 on the UK documentary bestsellers list.
Tracking the story of Barnsley’s local mining communities, filmmaker Rebecca Sills used archive photos and footage alongside original interviews to show how the area has changed since the UK’s coal industry heyday.
She said: “I’ve always been fascinated with my family history, and I thought this would be a fitting tribute to the mining community.”

Schitt’s Creek had an interesting lifespan at least in the United States. The tv show first launched back in 2015, but it didn’t actually pick up steam in the United States until the pandemic hit in 2020. The Canadian-based television show saw success over in Canada, but it only became a household name in the US just before it ended.
2020 proved to be the last season of the show, which was disappointing to US fans since they’d only just gotten into watching it. But will there ever be a Schitt’s Creek reboot? Here’s everything we know.

Could the long-rumoured “Schitt’s Creek” movie finally be happening?
According to series producer Andrew Barnsley, “Schitt’s Creek” creators Dan and Eugene Levy are exploring the idea of some kind of revival.
“It’s something that we know there’s demand and interest for it, really,” Barnsley exclusively told The Messenger.
“It’s something that I know Dan and Eugene are considering all the time, and I think it’s going to be a timing thing,” he added.

While Barnsley pointed out he didn’t have “any update” as to when it might happen, he noted that the two “love the world” they’ve created, but want to be sure that whatever they do doesn’t take away from the original series.

Son of a Critch: Exclusive Series Premiere First Look; EP Reveals Why You Should Watch Comedy Series
Son of a Critch makes its highly-anticipated stateside launch tonight at 8 p.m. on The CW.
Andrew Barnsley, who worked on Schitt's Creek, serves as executive producer on the half-hour comedy and believes the show will resonate with viewers for various reasons.
"Son of a Critch is a new feel-good, coming of age, comedy series about a family (maybe just like yours) set in St. John's, Newfoundland, in the 1980s," Barnsley teased, adding:
"It's based on Mark Critch's memoir by the same title."
Andrew says Son of a Critch is designed for the whole family to enjoy.
"It's a multi-generational comedy that checks all the boxes."
"First kisses, first days of school, Canada, 80s hairstyles, and timeless music like Frank Sinatra, you'll actually be surprised at how deeply you connect with this show."
Critch's book serves as the source material for the series, with Andrew describing Mark as a "Canadian treasure.
