A couple months ago, we heard that Blue Harbor Entertainment had acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the horror thriller Trim Season and were planning to give it a theatrical and On Demand release sometime in June. Plot: Infected by the bite of a werewolf, a man sets out to bring down a shady businessman before arranging the end of his own life.
Review: Larry Fessenden has over 100 acting credits to his name, and if you’ve been following the horror genre over the last few decades there’s a good chance you’ve seen him show up in something, whether it be a Ti West movie, Stake Land, Late Phases, You’re Next, or the movie I first noticed him in, Session 9. He’s also a prolific producer, and has directing credits stretching back to the 1980s – most of those credits being on horror movies. Over the course of his career, he has told stories of vampires, the Wendigo, a man-eating fish, and even came up with his own take on Frankenstein’s Monster with his 2019 film Depraved. Continuing down the path of putting his stamp on the concept of classic monsters,...

Released last fall, Lucky McKee’s “chamber thriller” Old Man had nothing to do with the Don’t Breathe films, despite starring Stephen Lang – who played the “Blind Man” in both Don’t Breathe and Don’t Breathe 2. But that didn’t stop the movie’s Russian distributor from marketing it as a prequel to those films! During an interview with Jb Hi-Fi, McKee laughed about the fact that his movie is part of the Don’t Breathe franchise, as far as Russia is concerned.
McKee said, “In Russia, they released it as Don’t Breathe: The Beginning. Kind of like the Italians used to do back in the day, with movies like Zombi 2.“
Sure enough, if you search the title Don’t Breathe: The Beginning, you’ll find confirmation that Old Man is a Don’t Breathe prequel in Russia.

Cannabis is known to have many medical benefits and can be helpful with conditions like cancer, chronic pain, and Ptsd. There is also evidence of marijuana being connected to spirituality and being used for ritualistic purposes throughout history. Trim Season is a fantastical and thought-provoking commentary on gender and the magical benefits of cannabis.
Trim Season was written by David Blair (The Triangle), Sean E. DeMott (American Satan), and Cullen Poythress, directed by Ariel Vida (Vide Noir), and produced by Paper Street Pictures. Vida was the production designer for Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s mind-bending films Something in the Dirt and The Endless, and if you’re familiar with the universe Benson and Moorhead have created, you will appreciate the imaginative and almost mythical Easter Eggs Vida incorporates into Trim Season.

Opening on a tapestry showcasing a cabin deep in the woods, director Lucky McKee allows viewers inside to watch its sleeping resident. An old man (Stephen Lang) awakens to discover the disappearance of his beloved companion, Rascal. Over the course of his search, the old man’s worry at loneliness transforms into spite, as a desire for vengeance stems from his abandonment. That is soon broken when a knocking is heard at the door.
Cautiously approaching the door with his gun, the old man discovers a lost hiker named Joe (Marc Senter). Distrust lingers in the old man, as he initially asks whether Joe is telling the truth and if he has been sent to spy on the cabin dweller. The lost hiker is frightened of the host, although he struggles for an...

One of my absolute favorite (and mind-bending) films that had its world premiere at this year's Popcorn Frights Film Festival was Old Man, directed by Lucky McKee from a screenplay by Joel Veach (and featuring phenomenal performances by Stephen Lang and Marc Senter), so I'm thrilled that in addition to its theatrical and VOD release back in October, the twist-filled thriller is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on December 6th via Rlje Films:

Plot: An old hermit living far off in the woods gets his simple life interrupted when a suspicious lost hiker shows up.
Review: I have always enjoyed Lucky McKee as a director. May and The Women were defining movies of their decade, and he has a way of presenting stories with a unique and intense approach. And though I prefer him as a writer and director on his projects, his eye and style are sometimes enough to shine through, with 2006’s The Woods as a solid example. Now he is back as a director only with his new movie Old Man.
Setting a story in one location is a difficult task to keep an engaging film and usually falls on whomever the lead is. Old Man doesn’t quite nail the landing but works well enough with razor-tight directing and Stephen Lang chewing the scenery for ninety minutes makes this...

Some wounds don’t heal. Not with time. Not with a mythical lake of water with the power to mend all ailments. And while we can try to forget, the mind will always keep a little bit of the truth in reach to ensure the cause of the pain is never far away. It therefore makes sense that we would ultimately meet and leave Stephen Lang’s character at the center of Old Man asleep on his bed with thumb in mouth like a child. The position alludes to the calm of innocence and the desire to find comfort from fear. It means he wakes in a state of disoriented ignorance before taking to slumber amidst grief and guilt’s unavoidable confusion. As for what’s in-between: that’s the journey put on-screen.

Since directing his first film All Cheerleaders Die in 2001, to May in 2002, and segments in Masters of Horror and Tales of Halloween, it’s safe to say filmmaker Lucky McKee has gained a cult following. His work usually explores some of the darker sides of humanity and things that most of us would never do, but the characters are relatable, and this is what makes McKee’s films appealing—it can be liberating to exorcise your demons by watching a movie about characters who do monstrous things, but without any of the messy consequences.
Written by Joel Veach in his screenwriting debut, McKee’s new film Old Man, stars the incomparable Stephen Lang as the Old Man, who lives in a cabin deep in the woods. When a lost hiker named Joe, played by Marc Senter, knocks on the Old Man’s door asking for help, a charged conversation ensues between the two men.

"My grandfather told me you can never be too careful in these woods… He told me it's beautiful but it can also be dangerous." Rlje Films has revealed an official trailer for Old Man, a small contained thriller from filmmaker Lucky McKee. "Thre's all kinds of death and beauty out here." When a lost hiker stumbles upon an erratic old man living in the woods, he could never have imagined the nightmare that awaits. This looks like it has some crazy twists and turns, and it might not be a random encounter after all. The thriller stars Stephen Lang as the "old man" and Marc Senter as the hiker, along with Liana Wright-Mark, and Patch Darragh. This looks like it gets unsettling, and has a stage play feel to it with two people in a cabin arguing about this & that. I'm still curious what the big twist might be and how they know each other.

Now it has been announced that Rlje Films has picked up the Old Man distribution rights and plans to give the film a theatrical, VOD, and digital release on October 14th.
Scripted by Joel Veach, who also wrote the story as a play that was workshopped at the Actor’s Studio in New York, Old Man follows
a lost hiker who stumbles upon the cabin of an erratic and reclusive Old Man. What starts off as cordial conversation soon turns dangerous as it becomes clear that one or both of them might be hiding a terrifying secret.

After playing the “Blind Man” in Don’t Breathe (and its more recent sequel), Stephen Lang is set to play “Old Man” in Lucky McKee‘s Old Man, which has been acquired for release.
Variety reports that Rlje Films has acquired Lucky McKee’s latest. The film will debut in theaters, on demand and across digital platforms on October 14.
“The film unfolds as a lost hiker stumbles upon an erratic old man living in the woods. That chance encounter triggers an unimaginable nightmare.”
Marc Senter (Starry Eyes), Liana Wright-Mark (Ocean’s 8), and Patch Darragh (“Succession”) co-star.
Joel Veach wrote the script for Old Man. Aaron B. Koontz (“The Pale Door”), Cameron Burns (“Scare Package”) and Ashleigh Snead (“The Block Island Sound”) produced for Paper Street.

Exclusive: Maxim Swinton (Halston) has joined the cast of Raymond and Ray, writer-director Rodrigo García’s (Four Good Days) film for Apple Studios.
He joins an ensemble that includes Ewan McGregor, Ethan Hawke, Maribel Verdú and Sophie Okonedo, as previously announced.
The film currently in production in Virginia centers on Raymond (McGregor) and Ray (Hawke), half-brothers who have lived in the shadow of a terrible father. Somehow, they still each have a sense of humor, and his funeral is a chance for them to reinvent themselves. There’s anger, there’s pain, there’s folly, there might be love, and there’s definitely grave-digging.
Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón is producing with Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures, with Gabriela Rodriguez and Shea Kammer serving as EPs.
Swinton recently portrayed a younger version of McGregor’s fashion designer Halston in Netflix’s Emmy-winning miniseries of the same name. The...

Following the success of "11.22.63" on Hulu, actor James Franco is set to star in and produce another Stephen King adaptation - this time a film take on King's short story "Drunken Fireworks" for Rabbit Bandini Productions and Rubicon Entertainment.
Matt Rager, who penned the script for several Franco-directed films including his "The Sound and the Fury" and "As I Lay Dying" adaptations, will write the project. No director is attached yet.
The story is set in a small town in Maine and centers on a mechanic (Franco) and a retired mob boss who compete in the town's annual Fourth of July fireworks competition. Franco, Vince Jolivette, Doug McKay, Robert Kaplan, Marc Senter and Nathan Grubbs will produce.

Over the past year I reviewed a lot of indie horror films, some of them really good, some of them just Ok, and some of them really, really bad. The following isn't exactly a best of the year list, because I haven't watched every single film that was released, played at a film festival, or completed filming this year. Rather, these are the best movies that I reviewed for MoreHorror.com in 2015, and are all movies that I can recommend without hesitation.
Mania is directed by Jessica Cameron and stars Ellie Church. Olalla is written and directed by Amy Hesketh and stars Amy Hesketh, Jac Avila, Mila Joya, and Erix Antoine. Headless is directed by Arthur Cullipher, written by Nathan Erdel, and stars Shane Beasley, Kelsey Carlisle, Dave parker and Ellie Church. To celebrate the October 16th release of the horror anthology Tales of Halloween, Daily Dead spoke to the filmmakers behind the movie to discuss the project, their individual contributions and more.
Lucky McKee is a completely singular filmmaker. From The Woods to The Woman, May to All Cheerleaders Die, he has worked through similar, often feminist, themes but never made the same movie twice. His segment in Tales of Halloween, a beautiful dark fairy tale called “Ding Dong,” represents yet another change of pace for the director.
How did you come to be involved with the movie? If I’m not mistaken, you’re the only filmmaker who’s not based in L.A. and who flew into town to shoot a segment.
Lucky McKee: Yeah, I was in the middle of a road trip and Axelle called me to ask if I wanted in on Tales of Halloween.

Come one! Come all! Gather around, because the carnival is back… Alleluia! The Devil’S Carnival that is! In celebration of the new film, I spoke with two of the films stars – Chantal Claret and Jimmy Urine. You might know them from their music careers, but I promise you, they steal the show in the carnival! This was a real treat for me, not only as a fan of their music, but as someone lucky enough to call them pals! Check it out as we talk about acting, The Hoff, and get a bit ‘old timey’ with slang!

It's war between heaven and hell in Alleluia! The Devil's Carnival, making its world premiere tonight at Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre ahead of its upcoming Us tour. We recently caught up with director Darren Lynn Bousman and writer/actor Terrance Zdunich (who plays Lucifer) to talk about the highly anticipated musical film follow-up to 2012's The Devil's Carnival.
On the decision to have heaven as the setting of the sequel:
Darren Lynn Bousman: We always knew that Devil’s Carnival was about more than just the carnival. When we did part one, heaven is only glimpsed at for a few seconds. And we knew that the next one that we did, we had to give heaven the same amount of time we gave hell.
After Devil’s Carnival 1 was completed, Terrance and I started talking about what would heaven look like and what could we do to make the audience excited to see heaven.

Back in 2012, Hell came to town in Darren Lynn Bousman’s The Devil’s Carnival. Written by and starring Terrance Zdunich (Repo! Three souls entered looking for redemption, but what they found was more despair – and some catchy tunes!
