After a career as producer and few short films, independent director Kim Cho-hee brings to light her debut feature, “Lucky Chan-sil”, a charming story of, well … a film producer, dealing with the challenges that life throws at her. Like many of this year's movies, her work was caught in the COVID19 storm, just in between Festival runs and (cancelled) theatrical releases; therefore, after gaining a rich palmarès in Festivals (Kbs Independent Film Award and the Cgv Arthouse Award at Biff and the Audience Award at the Seoul Independent Film Festival), got stalled abruptly. Hopefully not for long.

Ever been fooled by a video\DVD sleeve? You get sold that what you are about to see is the greatest action movie ever and you end up with a turgid melodrama and action sequences that have the excitement of a party political broadcast? In the west, we got that a lot,as distributors would look to capitalize on the latest trend. On occasion we get the reverse and despite being sold as one thing we get a really good example of something else. “Sword with No Name” got a Blu-ray release in the UK and I expected a full on period action movie. What I got was something definitely not as advertised but equally fascinating in its own right.

South Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk's latest film, "One on One," is set to open this year's edition of Venice Days, the Venice Film Festival sidebar modeled on the Cannes Directors' Fortnight. This is his 20th film, a revenge mystery centered on the Shadows Sect, a group of seven assassins out for blood after a female student is kidnapped, raped and murdered. It stars Ma Dong-seok ("The Good, the Bad and the Weird") as well as Kim Yeong-min ("I Saw the Devil"). Venice Days runs August 27-September 6 alongside the Venice Film Festival which, in 2012, awarded Kim Ki-duk its top prize, the Golden Lion, for his violent mother-son drama "Pieta." Between that film and now, "One on One," Kim directed hot festival title "Moebius," another brilliantly disturbing film maudit about icky family relations. Ram Releasing will distribute "Moebius" in 2014. Watch the trailer for "One on One" below. No word yet on a...

Kim Ki-duk’s One on One is to open the Venice Film Festival’s independantly run Venice Days section.
The 11th edition of Venice Days, which runs from Aug 27 to Sept 6, will open with the international premiere of One on One, which was released in South Korea on May 22 under its original title Il-dae-il.
It marks the 20th film of South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk and follows Moebius, which premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festval.
One on One centres on the kidnap, rape and murder of a female student. Seven members of the Shadows Sect stalk the seven people suspected of committing the crime, hunting down the killer.
Starring South Korean star Ma Dong-seok (The Good, the Bad, the Weird) as the leader of the Shadows, as well as Kim Yeong-min, the film will open the independent sidebar on Aug 27.
“We are very honored that Kim Ki-duk and his producers have chosen our showcase,” said...
