- Captained New Zealand in 80 tests, winning 28 of them as well as 138 ODIs, winning 70 including the finals of the 2000 ICC Knockout at Nairobi, Kenya which as of December 2022 remains New Zealand's only ICC trophy in the shorter format. Was also the captain his team when it reached the semi-finals of the 1999 and 2007 World Cups.
- Post retirement, he played for the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings in its inaugural edition in 2008 before taking over as it's coach from the following season.
- Took 171 catches in the slips, which as of date are the third highest for a non-wicketkeeper in tests, behind India's Rahul Dravid and Australia's Mark Waugh.
- Played for New Zealand in 111 tests scoring 7172 runs averaging 40 and 280 One Day Internationals scoring 8037 runs averaging just under 35.
