David Fincher is sometimes accused of a smug misanthropy, as his obsessive fascination with procedure, behavior, and psychology can suggest an unfeeling smirk or a weary shake of the head at the human condition. Though The Killer does touch on some weighty themes related to death and fate, particularly in a lyrical scene where Michael Fassbender’s character has a showdown with a glamorous, nihilistic fellow assassin (Tilda Swinton), the film’s relatively slight, linear narrative seems to have permitted the director to cease his investigations for a little while. His calculating approach is instead applied in service of a straightforwardly entertaining film, and while it might not offer much in the way of originality or depth, it’s undeniably effective and refreshingly unafraid to embrace its own shallowness. In conjunction with the film’s release, we ranked all of Fincher’s features to date. David Robb

A TV adaptation of the late Stieg Larsson’s Millennium book series is moving further into development at Prime Video, our sister publication Variety reports, with Veena Sud (The Killing) joining the project as showrunner.
If this sounds a little familiar, that’s probably because news of Prime Video’s adaptation was first reported back in 2020; this is the first update we’ve received since then.

Lisbeth Salander, the eponymous "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," is not like any role Rooney Mara has played before or since — particularly when it comes to costuming. Lisbeth has facial piercings, disheveled black hair (it changes from a mohawk to a side cut over the movie), shaved eyebrows, and is always dressed in some shade of black. This goth punk fashion sense contrasts with her lithe frame, but she still looks like someone you don't want to mess with. It helps that her face is girlish but not quite innocent — those big eyes and sharp nose meld into a piercing glare that pushes you to look away.
Director David Fincher recruited Mara from her scene-stealing appearance in his last film, "The Social Network." Interviewed for a retrospective on his most famous films in the November 2023 issue of Empire magazine, Fincher called Mara's face "an exquisite thing" and recalled how he...

Revenge! They say it’s best served cold, but sometimes a giant steaming pile of revenge can be really satisfying. The female revenge story is a subgenre that emerged from the old exploitation film days. The woman who is wronged in some way, usually by evil men, who then has to work her way back to enact revenge upon her tormentors always seems to end satisfyingly as they get their comeuppance. Let’s check out some of the best female revenge films where badass women put their enemies in their place.

Nancy Drew is back for its fourth and final season.
But before we dive into the Drew Crew's final adventure, we need to look back at their most intriguing mysteries, best relationship moments, and what we're hoping for from Nancy Drew Season 4 Episode 1.
Let's start from the beginning.
It seems so long ago that we met the Drew Crew. Heck, it was before they even figured out they were the Drew Crew.
The mystery of Lucy Sable, the Sea Queen, was the number one storyline of the series. It lasted the entirety of Nancy Drew Season 1, and the twists and turns changed everyone.
The biggest surprise? There was no mysterious killer roaming the streets of Horseshoe Bay for two decades. Lucy either slipped or jumped, and we may never know which one.
Lucy gave baby Nancy to Carson and Kate Drew to protect and raise, a secret they kept even after Kate Drew died.

Budd Boetticher’s excellent semi-autobiographical film may be Hollywood’s most uncondescending depiction of high-end Mexican culture. Robert Stack is the pushy Gringo who only slowly understands Latin society’s definitions of loyalty and machismo; his rocky relationship with Joy Page’s cultured señorita is as important as the bullfighting story with Gilbert Roland. It’s Boetticher’s best film, presented for the first time in two encodings, the 87-minute release version and the UCLA Film and TV Archive’s restoration of the full 124-minute seen South of the Border. The extra commentary and featurettes are welcome too.
