Back when Marvel Studios was looking to cast their Sorcerer Supreme for Doctor Strange, a number of names started doing the rounds. Among them were Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Hardy and Ryan Gosling, and while Benedict Cumberbatch would ultimately win the coveted role, fans were keen on seeing any one of those stars play the hero.
It appears as if the studio was also interested in the idea, as they commissioned artist Court Chu to put together a couple of pieces featuring the La La Land lead as Doctor Strange. Taking to his blog to reveal the artwork, it definitely sounds like Marvel may have asked for this in a bid to convince Gosling to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“I worked probably not even a day on some version of ‘Doctor Strange’ years ago. And back then they wanted Gosling.”

Before Benedict Cumberbatch landed the highly coveted role of Doctor Strange, Marvel and director Scott Derrickson met with a long line of Hollywood A-listers, including the likes of Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, Oscar Isaac, Ewan McGregor, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Joaquin Phoenix, and Ryan Gosling. Aside From Phoenix, who was courted quite aggressively, we're not really sure how close any of these guys actually came to being cast - but apparently the studio was pretty high on Gosling at one point. Artist Court Chu worked on the film only very briefly, but he was around long enough to put together some concept art of the La La Land actor suited up as The Sorcerer Supreme. “I worked probably not even a day on some version of ‘Doctor Strange’ years ago", Chu wrote on his blog (via Collider). "And back then they wanted Gosling.” Obviously this artwork only gives...

It turns out Ryan Gosling looks just as good in a cape as he does in tap shoes. Prior to Marvel casting Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role for “Doctor Strange,” the studio reportedly wanted to go with “La La Land’s” Ryan Gosling. Now we have proof of the alternate reality where this was true. Before Benedict Cumberbatch was cast in the role of Stephen Strange in Marvel's Doctor Strange, the studio was looking at actors such as Joaquin Phoenix, Jared Leto, and Ryan Gosling. I thought Cumberbatch was the perfect choice, but in case you're wondering it Strange would have looked like had Gosling landed the role, here's a piece of early concept art that was created by artist Court Chu for the studio. The artist posted the art on his website with the following comment:
“I worked probably not even a day on some version of Doctor Strange years ago, and back then they wanted Gosling.”
Sounds like Marvel's thoughts of casting Gosling went out the window when they saw this concept art. I enjoy Gosling and his work, but he definitely would not have been the right actor to play Strange. It's interesting and cool to see an artist's rendition of what...
