It's Sunday afternoon, or: your last chance to read all that stuff you meant to read last week before Monday brings a new deluge of things you will want to read. Below, some of our recommendations: "One Direction: The Tumblr Interview," by Jessica Bennett (Storyboard/Tumblr): The British boy band answers the tough questions, including, "What’s it like having swarms of girls chasing you around the globe?" "Is It Creepy to See Someone Reading Fifty Shades of Grey on the Subway?" by Adam Sternbergh (The New York Times Magazine): At this point, it's a question every single commuter has asked themselves. "Dinner With Daniel: Michael Keaton," by Daniel Kellison (Grantland): The actor on Beetlejuice, technology, almost starring in Lost, almost turning down Jackie Brown, and much, much more. Anthony Weiner may insist his marriage to Huma Abedin will survive, but why did he risk it all for affairs with women he never met? Jessica Bennett offers nine scientific theories for why men cheat online.
The flirtations began three years ago-long before Anthony Weiner's marriage. But they continued after his wedding, making their way onto Twitter, Facebook, and presumably, elsewhere. There was the woman in Seattle who alleged she'd never met the man; a Jewish gal who reportedly told Weiner she gave a mean, ahem, oral service; and, allegedly, a Vegas blackjack dealer. Late Monday, we learned of a fourth source of Weiner's wandering joystick: a 26-year-old Texas single mom who says her relationship with the congressman began in April, culminating with "hundreds of messages," photos, and an interview with ABC News. "I asked him to take a picture and write 'me' on it so I would know [it was him]," the woman said.

Tyler Clementi's roommate-who broadcast the gay teen's sexual encounter with a man, leading to his suicide-could get 10 years in prison. Jessica Bennett on cyberbullying's new price.
It was perhaps the most brutal example of a private moment gone public. A shy 18-year-old, an accomplished violinist, learns a month into the school year that his college roommate has been spying, via a computer webcam, on his sexual relations with another young man. This student is not openly gay, nor does he know how many of his peers have viewed the recording. So it's easy to imagine that Tyler Clementi was assuming the worst when, two days later, on September 21, the Rutgers freshman jumped 202 feet to his death from the George Washington Bridge.

Frequent Twitter users have shorter relationships than people who don't use the social-networking site, OkCupid, the online dating site and Daily Beast partner, found in a survey. Jessica Bennett on why thinking in 140-character bursts is shrinking our love lives. Plus, 10 charts about sex.
In an age where 140-character tweets have replaced talking on the telephone, where job and work and social life are multitasked between 19 open browsers, the idea that our attention spans are shrinking has become pretty well accepted. Last year, two Northwestern professors documented how the 15-second TV spot had come to replace lengthier, more in-depth (and by in-depth we mean 30-second) advertisements-an effort to match attention spans of the majority of viewers. Nicholas Carr, author of The Shallows, has described how modern technology has pushed so many distractions on us that it's possible we'll never have our attention spans return. "It used to be that the...

A new study appears to show that beautiful people are happier than their ugly counterparts-but research has also proven good looks to be a curse, especially on the job. Jessica Bennett reports.
If self-conscious young women didn't have enough to worry about, here's an awful new stereotype to add to the mix: Ugly people are sad. Not innately, of course-but over time, the curse of unattractiveness will affect them in so many ways that it's actually quantifiable. Ugly people make less money. They have trouble finding a mate. And in a culture that places insurmountable pressure on appearance, they don't feel as good about themselves when they walk down the street.

Francine Pascal's Sweet Valley High series sold 250 million copies and made ‘80s teens swoon. Jessica Bennett on whether the 73-year-old creator can recapture the magic with Sweet Valley Confidential.
Every great literary tradition has its progenitor. The Romantics had Goethe. The Modernists had Hegel. And for the vast canon of works devoted to the modern gal's sexual escapades and shoe-shopping habits, including Candace Bushnell's Sex and the City and Cecily von Zigesar's Gossip Girl, we have Francine Pascal to thank.

Pretty, popular, with perfect California tans, the identical twins were the Carrie Bradshaws of their day-"the most adorable,...

It was the problem that had no name: the buried, unspoken, yet so utterly debilitating feeling facing American housewives in the 1950s and 1960s. Feminist icon Betty Friedan wouldn't coin the phrase for three more years, but in 1960, Newsweek had its finger on the pulse. In this weekly magazine feature, "Reliving History," we dig into the Newsweek archives to see how times have changed-or haven't.
Who could ask for anything more? In a special report from March, 1960, Newsweek investigated the changing lives of educated women in America. Anticipating the social upheaval to come, the magazine wrote of the "young wife with a brain," who seemed to have it all but still "often complains that she is not completely happy." Why was she so dissatisfied? Science editor Edwin Diamond found a growing "disenchantment with what she has been brought up to expect"-the idea that this was no longer a man's world; that opportunities were limitless.

Man up! Man down! From every angle, it seems, men are being told they're doing it all wrong. Is it any wonder they're confused? Jessica Bennett on the male identity crisis.
Dear men: We're sorry to break this to you, but you're pretty much screwed. In decline, to be exact. Unnecessary, as The Atlantic put it-and overwhelmingly, the victims of the current "Mancession."

We are being facetious, of course. (You're totally not screwed.) But the crisis of manhood has become something of an obsession these days, with belligerent, contradictory, nonstop messages bombarding from every angle. Over the past six months, dozens of articles have used the word "mancession" to describe the current economic downturn. "Retrosexual" has replaced "metrosexual" to describe a breed of über-masculine fashionistos (clad in $300 flannel shirts). And just in case you weren't already confused, there are now...

Men in their twenties and thirties are fed up with women, but author Kay Hymowitz says you can't blame them when women are demanding equality except when it comes to romance. Plus, Jessica Bennett on the modern male's identity crisis.
About a week ago, The Wall Street Journal published an excerpt of my new book, which argued that the new stage I call pre-adulthood-the twenties and early thirties-was not bringing out the best in single young men. Some men didn't like it. As in, "cancel-my-subscription-the-writer-should-contract-such-a-bad-case-of-carpel-tunnel-syndrome-she-never-writes-again" didn't like it.
Related story on The Daily Beast: The History of Kissing
But a lot of the responses unwittingly proved my point-and another one: Men are really, really angry. Consider: "We're not Stuck in pre-adulthood, we choose it because there aren't any desirable American women. They've been bred to abuse men." This fairly typical response that appeared at the Seattle Post Intelligencer website: "Sorry ladies.
