I couldn't stop raving about David Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for a few months. And while I loved the whole film, top to bottom, it's the brilliant title sequence that gets your attention and draws you in. So it's no surprise to hear that its creator, Tim Miller, has landed a director's gig.
According to Deadline, Miller will take the helm on Gravel, an adaptation by Legendary Pictures of a Warren Ellis title about a British S.A.S. solider who wields deadly magic and battles hordes of demons by night. So, yeah, the potential is there for this to be one kickass experience.
Legendary will produce the project with Rick Alexander with Ellis as executive producer. Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell are writing the script.
And for those of you who've not yet seen Miller's incredible work in the Fincher film - shame on you!

Last year we told you that Legendary Pictures was developing a feature adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic book series, Gravel. Rick Alexander is producing the film and Warren Ellis is serving as both executive producer and penning the screenplay.
Ellis recently told MTV,
“I’m halfway through [Gravel] right now. I’m actually writing a new William Gravel story. It’s a horror-action thing in the whole combat magician mode of those books.”
Avatar Press publishes the ongoing series, which blends espionage and dark fantasy in tracking the modern-day exploits of British “combat magician” William Gravel. Ellis (Planetary) first introduced the character in a 1999 limited series of graphic novels entitled Strange Kiss.

Warren Ellis, one of the comic world’s finest writers, is a very busy man these days. Apparently not satisfied with having six comic books on the go at once, a webcomic, a column on Second Life, a novel, a developing television series, a DVD animated movie of Castlevania: Dracula’s Curse and early 2000’s comic Red in movie development, Ellis’ sporadically released comic series Gravel is now heading into pre-production.
Gravel, co-created and now written by artist Mike Wolfer concerns the exploits of ‘combat magician’ William Gravel. Aside from having the hardest manly name since Chev Chelios, he’s an ex-sas soldier who works with magic that applies to war but also moonlights as a mercenary for a few X-Files-type capers and adventures.
The first draft will be written by Ellis himself, who will then sit back as executive producer. Rick Alexander (TV’s Strong Medicine) will be producing.

As a big fan of Warren Ellis and his writing, I’m particularly happy to report that one of my favorite comics of his, Gravel, has now been optioned by Legendary Pictures for development as a feature film. This latest acquisition by Legendary makes a lot of sense considering they have several genre projects already going including Inception, Sucker Punch, Jonah Hex and Clash of the Titans.
In case you’re not as familiar with Gravel as you should be, it was created by Ellis in 1999 and is published by Avatar Press in its most current form. It centers on William Gravel, a soldier in the British S.A.S. who uses his skills in dark magic to moonlight and battle supernatural beings for clients in order to make extra cash. Along the way he encounters all manner of nastiness but still manages to not only survive, but to flourish.

The makers of Surrogates, Beverly Hills Chihuahua and The Shaggy Dog remake have optioned a little-known comic book. Mandeville Films is the production company and the comic was called Cla$$War. It came out between the years of 2002 and 2004 and was published by an independent publisher called Com.x. Surrogates was based on a Top Cow graphic novel so Mandeville has a proven track record when it comes to mining comics for movies.
Cla$$War was about a superhero called the American, a superpowered man who is called upon by the United States military to pursue America's foreign policy around the world. The writer of the series, Rob Williams, likened his book to a political thriller with elements of Noam Chomsky but with superpowers.
Surrogates producers and Mandeville owners Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman will produce the new movie along with Rick Alexander. A writer hasn't been hired yet.
