Comedy drama Harlem has been renewed for a third series at Amazon Prime, and here are the details.
Writer Tracy Oliver made her name writing a series of comedy features with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, including 2016 sequel Barbershop: The Next Cut, the wonderful Girls Trip, a film starring Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish, which flew under the radar in 2017 and is well worth seeking out, and 2019’s Little. Oliver most recently penned a television adaptation of First Wives Club, which ran for three series, and last year’s comedy horror The Blackening.
She then went on to create single camera comedy Harlem, which, reports Variety, has just been renewed for a third series at Amazon Prime. While the setup is nothing new – the series follows four friends who met at University in New York, and subsequently have to support each other through the trials and...

When viewers tune in to the second season of Harlem, the comedy about four ambitious best friends (played by Meagan Good, Grace Byers, Jerrie Johnson and Shoniqua Shandai) navigating life in New York, they’ll find something a little deeper: frank discussions about mental health. Ahead of Harlem‘s Scad TVfest panel, showrunner Tracy Oliver discusses how the events of the past two years affected the writers room and found their way into the show — and teases what she can about the upcoming Girls Trip sequel.
A lot has happened since the first season of Harlem. What felt most different this time around?
I started working on the show in 2019, and we broke the whole first season pre-pandemic. When we came together to write season two, we were squarely in the middle of a new reality, and it felt disingenuous to make a light season. A lot of us were...

When Harlem first aired in December 2021, Camille — the show’s protagonist, played by Meagan Good — reckoned with the changes to the once predominantly Black neighborhood. “The number of actual dateable men is bleak,” she lectured both to her television audience and a room of fictional students at Columbia University. Her opening presentation to the class during the show’s pilot featured the Mosuo women of China, who rule their community and have full liberty to go in and out of marriages as they please. “We are not Mosuo,” Camille told the class.

For so long it seems like TV shows have starved Black women and women of color of sisterhood representation, but Prime Video's "Harlem" is changing that. The hit comedy series, created by Tracy Oliver, first premiered on Dec. 3, 2021, and returned for its highly anticipated second season on Feb. 3, 2023. The premise of the show revolves around the lives of four women in Harlem - Camille (Meagan Good), Quinn (Grace Byers), Angie (Shoniqua Shandai), and Tye (Jerrie Johnson) - as they juggle their tumultuous love lives, friendship, and careers.
The bond that the foursome share onscreen closely resembles other sister circles we've grown attached to, from shows like "Girlfriends," "Insecure," and "Living Single," to name a few. But Byers still wants viewers to know "Harlem" brings something else to the table by exploring familiar stories through new characters, some of which are rarely represented on the small screen.

“What’s the New York that I lived in and that I loved? It’s Harlem,” declares creator and showrunner Tracy Oliver about naming her Amazon comedy after the place she loves so dearly. “It just had such a cultural impact for me. The style, the music, the people, everything about it has a rich history. And so when you say you live in Harlem or you’re from Harlem and if you just say the word Harlem in New York, it has like a connotation to it that just gives a lot of people joy,” she explains, adding for our recent Q&a, “and so, I couldn’t think of another word that really captured the essence of the show more than using the city itself.”
We talked with Oliver as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022 Emmy Awards contenders. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Amazon Prime Video kicked off the second day of Deadline’s Contenders TV event with a panel for Harlem, featuring Tracy Oliver, Meagan Good, Jerrie Johnson, Shoniqua Shandai, and Grace Byers.
“I was kind of stunned that there wasn’t a show centered on black female friendship,” says Oliver. “When I was living in New York, it was a lot more black and brown than shows like Sex and the City or Friends present New York as. I love those shows, they’re iconic and fantastic, but you want to see women that look like you.”

Oliver created and wrote this comedy series about four girlfriends living in Harlem. Camille (Good), Tye (Johnson), Quinn (Byers), and Angie (Shandai) became friends at NYU and are now in their thirties trying to balance their love lives and their careers as they try to follow their dreams.
