Maybe this requiem for LCD Soundsystem didn't need to be so reverential
Nobody stops in pop; they reform, repackage and keep on rocking. Props to James Murphy, then, for calling it quits. The LCD Sound-system frontman disbanded his punk-funk ensemble at the height of their powers, playing one last show at Madison Square Gardens in April 2011. Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace's document of that gig is a bittersweet confection – a gorgeously shot concert film that cuts repeatedly between the near-desperate abandon of the show and Murphy, in his apartment the following day, wandering around in his pants and petting the dog. The joke's funny the first time, depressing the second and then a little grating. This is the end of a band, not a career. You wonder if they needed to treat the death of a party with such reverence.

When LCD Soundsystem front man James Murphy announced he was closing up shop on the band he founded, filmmakers Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern had to know why. They approached Murphy with the idea of making a movie about his journey and his decision to go out on top. Then LCD announced they would play one final show in New York's Madison Square Garden and Lovelace and Southern's epic concert docu took form. Call it The Last Waltz for the electro-dj-generation. Lovelace and Southern's creation is a complex, yet beautifully constructed exploration of legacy, set to some of the most attractive concert footage in recent memory. LCD and music fans rejoice; this is one of the best concert documentaries in years. At the heart...

Following up their initial competition announcement the folks at the Sundance Film Festival have released the names of thirty additional 2012 selections, in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next, and New Frontiers sections.
Although these sections tend to focus more on young and up-and-coming filmmakers (particularly the Next sidebar, which was created just a few years ago with that specific mandate), you might find a few names you recognize in the full list of invited films below. Next is where you'll find the new film from "Great World of Sound" director Craig Zobel; it's called "Compliance" and it's described as the (based-on-a-)true story of what happens "when a prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee." Lynn Shelton, director of "Humpday," will premiere "Your Sister's Sister" starring Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and "Humpday"s Mark Duplass. Duplass also wrote his wife Katie Aselton...

Here’s where Sundance gets fun!
The midnight selection always produces the best genre films and this year’s slate for the Jan. 19-29 looks to out-due last year’s picks. Perhaps the most unexpected inclusion is the debut film of comic Mike Birbiglia, who brings his story of late-night, unconscious wanderings to the big screen in Sleepwalk With Me.
Trevor Groth, Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In many ways, the extremes of the Festival’s program are most readily apparent in our out-of-competition sections, which showcase the wildest comedies, the most terrifying horror films and uncompromised visions from singular voices springing up from around the country and the world. We hope audiences experiment with their film selections to an equal degree as these filmmakers have experimented with their storytelling.”

Yesterday Sundance released their films up for competition for the 2012 festival. But that was only one half of the festival slate. Now Sundance has released the second half of films that will be released as part of the festivities. Films in competition are just as interesting as those not in competition and with titles The Raid and Wuthering Heights are all on the list, it will be a fun watch this year.
Check out the list for the Out of Competition film that can be seen at the Sundance Film Festival 2012 below.
Spotlight
Corpo Celeste / Italy (Director and screenwriter: Alice Rohrwacher) — After moving back to southern Italy with her mother and older sister, 13-year-old Marta struggles to find her place, restlessly testing the boundaries of an unfamiliar city and the catechism of the Catholic church.Cast: Yle Vianello, Salvatore Cantalupo, Anita Caprioli, Renato Carpentiere.

Yesterday The Sundance Film Festival released their list of In-Competition films, today they have released their line-up of Non-Competition films. I've had a blast every year that I've attended The Sundance Film Festival, it's always a surprise! You never know what movie you are going to see until you see it. If you ever get a chance to go I highly recommend that you do. Each film on the list has a little description next to it. The festival will take place January 19th to the 29th.
Check out the list of movies below and let us know of any that you are interested in watching or hearing about so that we can get it covered for you. Some of the films might look familiar to you such as The Raid, Grabbers and Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, and Wuthering Heights. The Raid is at the top of...

Yesterday the Sundance Film Festival announced the core lineup of films [1] that will be spotlit in the Competition slates at the 2012 festival. Now we've got a lineup of films that will play out of competition in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next <=> and New Frontier schedules. There are a few films in here with which you might be nominally familiar, like The Raid, Grabbers and Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie, not to mention Andrea Arnold's new version of Wuthering Heights. But many are new announcements. While the competition lineups are always a good place to look for some of the films that will be the most talked-about in the year following each Sundance fest, these schedules are where some of the more unique and provocative films live. There are still some big premieres to be announced next week, but if I was making a big Sundance wishlist,...

Sundance 2012: Adam Wingard, Katie Aselton and Nicholas McCarthy Stock Park City at Midnight Section
New proof that mumblecore is heading into a natural fitting genere of horror, Katie Aselton's Black Rock and V/H/S - the project helmed by Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Ti West, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, Radio Silence featuring Joe Swanberg, Calvin Reeder, Adam Wingard, Sophia Takal and Kate Lyn Sheil are a pair of highly anticipated titles that'll be shown in Park City at Midnight. Among our correct predictions we find Nicholas McCarthy's The Pact and (see pic above) Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim's wacko Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie. Completing the roster we have a non-horror title, documentary (Shut Up And Play The Hits) which follows the 48-hour period after LCD Soundsystem pulled the plug. Look for perhaps one more title to be added to a line-up that only has seven titles in all. Black Rock / U.S.A. (Director: Katie Aselton, Screenwriter: Mark Duplass...

Following yesterday's announcement of the titles lined up for the four programs of the Competition, the Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineups of its out-of-competition sections: Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, Next <=> and New Frontier. This time, I'm going to go ahead and copy-n-paste the release nearly in full because, well, these are, potentially at least, the more interesting batches.
We'll cut in just as Trevor Groth, Director of Programming for the Sundance Film Festival, is saying, “In many ways, the extremes of the Festival’s program are most readily apparent in our out-of-competition sections, which showcase the wildest comedies, the most terrifying horror films and uncompromised visions from singular voices springing up from around the country and the world. Following yesterday’s announcement of competition titles, Sundance Film Festival 2012 have announced the line-up for a few more sections today. In their Spotlight section we have a few of my favorite Tiff titles, including Wuthering Heights (pictured above), Your Sister’s Sister, as well as audience-winners The Raid and Where Do We Go Now? We also get the insane-looking Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie in the midnight section. Check out the list below.

Here’s where Sundance gets dangerous.
The midnight movies and the perennially protean category the festival calls Next always produces the most f’ed up horror movies, the weirdest comedies, and other things that are just plain inexplicable.
This year’s slate for the Jan. 19-29 festival includes bloodsucking, alcohol-hating aliens, murderous girlfriends, ghostly found-footage, and a comedy that literally* cost One Billion Dollars to make. (*Not true.)
For stand-up fans, it also brings the debut film of storytelling comic Mike Birbiglia, who brings his story of late-night, unconscious wanderings to the big screen in Sleepwalk With Me. (That’s him in the photo,...

"You voice is quite booming," Alison Mosshart tells bandmate Jamie Hince in "Blood Pressures," this intimate short film about The Kills. "Quite manly and booming," she adds playfully, as if she's never noticed before. Hince's simple response, in the most tremendously masculine tone, "I know," is indeed booming. It's scotch and smoke and amps, lots of amps. Perhaps Mosshart had grown used to the voices of her other bandmates in The Dead Weather, notably Jack White's, whom she had been touring with for so long before returning to Hince to make The Kills' fourth record.
Still, it's an odd thing to say to a collaborator of 11 years, but in a way it highlights something about the duo's creative relationship -- one that is still brimming with discovery even after four albums together. And this fourth one may be their most sweetly brutal creation yet, a fuller realization of their trademark dark sensibilities.

This week's podcast goes to the heart of the family, talking to director Jim Sheridan about his Iraq-war sibling drama Brothers, reviewing the Clive Owen Dad-under-pressure movie The Boys Are Back (as well as Jacques Audiard's Cannes-impressing A Prophet), and discovers how a band of musical brothers landed their dream job of documenting Blur's reunion last year.
Jim Sheridan, who made his name with the Christy Brown biopic My Left Foot, tells Jason Solomons why he decided to remake Danish director Susanne Bier's critically acclaimed 2004 drama Brødre as a war-torn love triangle with a gold-plated Hollywood cast of Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman.
Next, Xan Brooks joins in to review the week's key releases: Brothers (which both critics liked), The Boys Are Back (which they're split on) and the hotly anticipated A Prophet, which took the top prize at this year's London film festival and was...

The emotional reunion of Blur is the subject of this celebratory music documentary
The emotional reunion of Blur is the subject of this celebratory music documentary by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace. It's tremendously shot and has great insights about the internal psychological dynamics of the band, particularly Damon Albarn's tricky relationship with lead guitarist Graham Coxon. But it often looks like a very high-grade piece of officially approved merchandise.
Blur's music brings back the 1990s with a great emotional rush, and rightly or wrongly, they are associated with the Britpop craze and the huge and now almost unimaginable popularity of Tony Blair. Albarn supported Blair in the early 90s and had meetings with him - though to his credit, he was always less infatuated than Noel Gallagher, and later strongly condemned the Iraq war. (Albarn's mutation from beautiful boy to troubled man is a rather Blair-ish facial journey.

No Distance Left to Run is, apparently, 'a musing on Englishness and identity, and a portrait of friendship and resolution'. We hope that doesn't mean it's boring ...
A new film chronicling Blur's 2009 reunion will appear in UK cinemas in January. No Distance Left to Run traces the band's journey from their humble beginnings all the way to their poignant headline set at this year's Glastonbury festival.
The label-sanctioned documentary doesn't even have an Imdb.com entry yet, but the band have released a trailer for the film on their website. It's got everything from backstage shenanigans to a Damon Albarn stage dive, not to mention greyhounds, crowdsurfing and hundreds of thousands of roaring fans. And lots of hugs from bandmates.
No Distance Left to Run uses footage from rehearsals and concerts this year, as well as interviews and more than a decade's worth of archive footage. It was directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace,...
