In a world where our past often haunts us, lingering like a shadow, escaping its clutches can prove to be an arduous task. Such is the gripping tale of Irene, whose tranquil family life is shattered when a group of merciless criminals, entwined with her stepfather’s history, emerges from the shadows. Irene realizes that her stepfather cannot confront this threat alone, and Irene’s strength compels her to take a stand.

Ace Eddies: ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Everything Everywhere’ win over Oscar rivals for Best Film Editing
“Top Gun: Maverick” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 5. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Elvis” and “Tár ” — as well as “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plus “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

Elvis — nominated for eight Oscars including best picture — offers a bold look at the life of Elvis Presley while capturing the zeitgeist of the period.
But Jonathan Redmond and Matt Villa, Oscar-nominated editors and longtime collaborators of Baz Luhrmann, say the director was adamant that his movie, starring Austin Butler as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, would not be a conventional biographical film.
Luhrmann crafted a film that combines electrifying performances, drama and archival material while using Elvis’ manager, Colonel Parker (Tom Hanks), as a narrative device to tell the story. The editors say the experience was shaped by starting with 650 hours of principal photography and another 350 hours of archival material. Each performance was treated as an action set piece that told a different part of Presley’s story while showcasing the flamboyant singer; for instance, the film features Presley’s 1954 debut Louisiana Hayride performance, which helped launch his career.

Continuing our look at the below-the-line crafts categories at this year’s Oscars, we get to film editing. The editor(s) on a movie are frequently the most important collaborators with a director. The director and editor will frequently sit in an edit bay for hours, days, and even months to craft the pace and feel of a movie until it’s just right, as is the case with the five movies nominated this year.

Vivid, luscious, and operatic, “Elvis” is undoubtedly the vision of Baz Luhrmann. But the Australian director, as he’s done on all his features, collaborates with women at high levels all throughout his production team.
“We all stand there shoulder to shoulder with him,” said his lifelong costume designer, production designer, producer (and wife) Catherine Martin.
At TheWrap’s Screening Series Q&a for “Elvis,” Martin was joined with producer Gail Berman and cinematographer Mandy Walker for a spirited conversation about the making of the film.
“Elvis” is nominated for eight Oscars and all three women are nominated in their respective categories: Berman for Best Picture, Walker for Best Cinematography (only the third women ever nominated), and Martin for Best Picture, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.

Austin Butler’s agent told him he would need to gain weight to play the older version of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” “I heard that Ryan Gosling when he was going to do ‘The Lovely Bones,’ had microwaved Häagen-Dazs and would drink it,” Butler tells Variety. “So I started doing that. I would go get two dozen doughnuts and eat them all. I really started to pack on some pounds. It’s fun for a week, and then you feel awful about yourself. But we were planning on shooting chronologically in the beginning. That quickly went out the window with Covid. It was just impossible.”
On this week’s episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Butler sits down to discuss receiving his first Oscar nomination for best actor. He also discusses renting an apartment after the Warner Bros. corporate cards were shut off following the Covid shutdown.

Fun fact: The last time a Best Picture Oscar winner also scored a craft victory was Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” which took home awards for Paul Austerberry’s production design and Alexandre Desplat’s score in 2018. Which means that Best Picture winners “Coda” (no craft nominations) “Nomadland”, “Parasite”, and “Green Book” (editing) all left empty-handed as far as craft wins.
But look for the five-year craft drought to end if frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” wins Best Picture. As part of its Oscar-leading 11 nominations, it captured craft nods for costume design, editing, score, and song. It certainly has momentum on its side as the populist favorite. In addition to Best Picture, it’s a serious above-the-line contender for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (the Daniels), Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu), and Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan...

The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin), the first Irish-language film nominated for an Academy Award for best international feature, will receive special recognition at the 17th annual Oscar Wilde Awards next month.
First-time feature director Colm Bairéad and producer Cleona Ní Chrualaoí will be on hand March 9 at Bad Robot, the Santa Monica production company of J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath, to accept the award for the film.
Created by the US-Ireland Alliance, the Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to the movies, television and music. This marks the first time a film is being honored.
“For An Cailín Ciúin to be in the final five, in a category with more than 90 eligible films, is a massive achievement,” Trina Vargo, founder of the US-Ireland Alliance, said in a statement. “It’s lovely to see Irish-language films receiving more attention...

When “All That Breathes” begins, it’s unclear if you’re watching a documentary or a fictional film. The camera slowly pans over the cityscape of New Delhi, patiently introducing viewers to the world captured so beautifully in filmmaker Shaunauk Sen’s documentary. And that cinematic approach to the storytelling was entirely by design.
Sen revealed during the latest installment of TheWrap’s “How I Did It,” sponsored by HBO Documentary Films, that initially he began filming the story of two brothers who capture and treat injured birds in New Delhi with handheld cameras.
“What happens is that if you’re holding the camera, it has a kind of restless, anxious quality to it,” Sen said. “We realized that the characters are such philosophers that the tone of the film had to be more contemplative and meditative.”

When it comes to predicting the Oscar winner for Best Film Editing, you can’t go wrong by looking for the movie with the most cuts. Past winners “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2008), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016), “Ford v Ferrari” (2020) and “Dune” (2022) included high-octane action sequences with frenetic cutting. And a slew of other champs — including “Saving Private Ryan” in 1999, “Black Hawk Down” (2002), “The Hurt Locker” (2010), “Hacksaw Ridge” (2017) and “Dunkirk” (2018) — have been war pictures. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Film Editing predictions.))
Oscar voters also embrace film editors who skillfully juggle multiple storylines, as was the case with “Traffic” (2001) and “Crash” (2006). And they like films that expertly inter-cut music with images, such as “Cabaret” (1973), “Chicago” (2003), “Whiplash” (2015), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2019) and 2021 winner “Sound of Metal.” Special effects extravaganzas like “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004) and “Gravity” (2014) won by deftly blurring the lines between the real and the fantastic.

On January 9, we heard from the first three guilds — art directors, cinematographers and sound editors — with their nominees for the best of the year in their respective fields. On Jan. 10, it was the turn of the casting directors and sound mixers to weigh in with their choices. The actors, directors, and makeup artists & hairstylists were heard from on Jan. 11. And the costume designers and producers piped in just as Oscar nominations voting kicks off on Jan. 12. The visual effects wizards added their say on the last day of Oscar voting on Jan. 18. The writers revealed their roster the day after Oscar nominations were announced. And the film editors announced who made the cut on Feb. 1

The Academy has released the list of nominations for the 2023 Oscars. Everything Everywhere All at Once led the pack this year with 11 nominations, followed closely by the war drama All Quiet On The Western Front and dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin.
A few actors who made big comebacks this year received nominations for their roles, including Brendan Fraser for The Whale and former child actor Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Also in the running for best actor are Austin Butler, Colin Farrell, Billy Nighy and Paul Mescal, all first-time nominees. In a surprising nod to indie film To Leslie, Andrea Riseborough scored a nomination for best actress. The race also includes Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh.
Jimmy Kimmel will return to host the Oscars, making his third appearance as emcee after his previous hosting stints in 2017 and 2018.

Elvis scooped up eight Oscar nominations on Tuesday, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Austin Butler in the title role. The good news dovetailed neatly with the birthday of director Baz Luhrmann’s wife and producing partner Catherine Martin, and their wedding anniversary, and yet tragically, it also comes just two days after the pair attended the funeral service for Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie Presley.

In the season of the spectacle, the Oscar craft nominations were pretty evenly split, led by “Elvis” and the late-surging “All Quiet on the Western Front” with six. Next in line with four nominations were “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Topping out at three nominations each were “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Babylon,” and “The Batman.” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Fabelmans,” and “TÁR” were nominated for two craft awards apiece. And “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” and “Empire of Light” scored lone cinematography nominations for Darius Khondji (his second) and Roger Deakins (his 16th).
This was definitely the result of an unusually competitive field containing three sequels, a DC reboot (“The Batman”), a World War I actioner (“All Quiet”), a multiverse adventure (“Everything Everywhere”), an epic Hollywood comedy-drama (“Babylon”), and a musical biopic extravaganza (“Elvis”). The nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards are one of the least-dignified things I have had to scramble with after (admittedly) sleeping in late, and if it’s never the right time to have a sincere opinion on what this sort-of-defined yet ultimately amorphous group thinks about the 20-or-so movies they bothered to see at a paid screening it’s also best to get onto the nominations while (also) noting it’s pretty hilarious Andrea Riseborough’s hail-mary To Leslie campaign worked, Elvis‘ editing nomination might suggest “cuts a lot” is their primary requirement, and the film industry might be at its lowest point ever if the Russo brothers win Best Picture statues.

Awards voters love a transformation: Gary Oldman in “Darkest Hour,” Jessica Chastain in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and Christian Bale in “Vice” are just some of the recent winners who disappeared into their roles. And the recent Makeup and Hairstylists Guild (Muahs) nominations seem to be an indicator of the trend continuing this year.
Among this year’s Muahs nominees are “The Batman,” which, despite being released in March 2022, has shown up on numerous guild honors lists including American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), Motion Picture of Sound Editors (Mpse).
The transformation in the film belongs to Colin Farrell, who plays Oswald Cobblepot, the scarred and pudgy midlevel Gotham City gangster with the (unwelcome) nickname of “the Penguin.”
Prosthetic makeup artist Michael Marino designed the look. Director Matt Reeves cites John Cazale, Sydney Greenstreet and Bob Hoskins as inspirations for the role. “I saw him as being almost like a throwback Warner Bros. gangster,...

With 11 nominees for Best Picture, 10 for Best Director, and nine titles battling it out for Best Drama series, competition will be fierce at tonight’s Critics Choice Awards. Several ties in the voting process led the 600-member Critics Choice Association to nominate more films than a category typically allows, which simply means that even more of the year’s biggest films and shows have a shot at the prizes.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads all films with 14 nominations, while Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” is close behind with 11 nominations. “Babylon” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” each picked up nine nods, while “TÁR” and “Elvis” each scored seven.
On the television side, “Abbott Elementary” and “Better Call Saul” led the pack with six and five nominations, respectively.

Lisa Marie, the daughter of late music legend Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, died on Thursday after going into cardiac arrest at her home in Calabasas, California.
The singer, who had just attended the Golden Globes on Tuesday to support Baz Luhrmann’s biopic of her father, “Elvis,” was 54.
“It is with a heavy heart that I must share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla Presley said in a statement to media. According to multiple outlets, Lisa Marie will be buried at Elvis’ Memphis home, Graceland.
Elvis’ only child was born on Feb. 1, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. When he died in 1977, she became a joint heir to the estate at 9 years old.
Presley had a series of high-profile marriages, including her 1994 nuptials with Michael Jackson, which many regarded as some kind of publicity stunt at the time. She appeared in his “You Are Not...

Close behind was “The Banshees of Inisherin,” with 14 slots, including Best Film, Best Director for Martin McDonaugh and Leading Actor for Colin Farrell. Meanwhile, the ascendance of the power-arthouse breakout “Everything Everywhere All at Once” continues apace, with the Daniels’ maximalist multiverse tale finding a home in 12 categories that include Best Film, Director, Original Screenplay, Editing, Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis, Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan and Leading Actress for Michelle Yeoh. For two and a half hours, “Elvis” is dominated by Austin Butler’s performance as the iconic singer-songwriter. But the ending to filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s splashy biopic hard cuts to the real Elvis Presley in one of his last performances ever, and for Luhrmann and editor Jonathan Redmond, this “gut punch” was the exact right way to conclude this epic story.
Back in 2018, the editing process for the film began – before even a frame of the movie had been shot. Indeed, Luhrmann and his team started by putting together a reel using existing materials to give a sense of what “Elvis” would feel like. And it was in thumbing through that archival material that they hit upon the footage that would close out the film.
“As you know there’s the trope at the end of a movie, usually in credits, you see the real character and I feel...

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” is an overwhelming sensory experience in which all the tools of cinema are utilized to convey not only what it was like to watch and hear Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) in his prime but what it was like to be Elvis — and what it was like to be Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks), the man who both elevated and exploited The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The movie meticulously recreates the surface details of Presley’s life and times but goes further to convey the emotional state of American culture at large in the decades during which Elvis was at its center — and how that emotional state transformed across the decades.

Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” was just the right musical spectacle to lure moviegoers back to theaters: a delirious, non-stop roller coaster ride capturing the King of Rock’s rebellious career along with his enduring cultural impact. The result was a record 151 million domestic gross for the director, paving the way for potential Oscar glory. The charismatic Austin Butler — who became one with Elvis — leads the way as the Best Actor favorite, with a likely Best Picture nomination as well.
That could translate into several craft nominations, too. Multiple Oscar winner Catherine Martin (for costume and production-designing “The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!”) returns in both categories, splitting duties with co-production designer Karen Murphy. Also in a great position to land a nomination is the sound team of supervising sound editor Wayne Pashley, Oscar-winning re-recording mixer Andy Nelson (“Les Misérables” and “Saving Private Ryan”), and re-recording mixer Michael Keller.
