If you're like me, Hgtv Design Star managed to sneak up on you recently, and that's because you don't actually watch a whole lot of Hgtv. And, if you're like me, now that we have two episodes gone, you're really missing Clive Pearse. Nothing against new host Tanika Ray, although if you look at the show's homepage and try to find her (down on the left with a tiny picture), you may get the impression they know Design Star without Clive just feels weird.
At any rate, we just had the White Box episode, and it has proven to be the measuring stick it always is. Some designers still manage, somehow, to make utterly boring rooms, and some stood out as the ones to watch. It's always been the episode where viewers find out who they want to cheer on for the rest of the show, and who is going...

(S05E01) 'Design Star' is back with new contestants, new challenges and a more hands-on approach from its trio of shrewd and savvy judges.
Former host Clive Pearse has been edged out this season to give chief critics Vern Yip, Candice Olson and Genevieve Gorder more screen time. I'm still not completely sold on this change. I miss Pearse's breezy charm and acerbic asides, but I'm looking forward to hearing more opinion and commentary from the judges.
I'm also looking forward to seeing the contestants work in New York City, the perfect place to show off edgy, urban and upscale designs.

Hgtv's breakout hit reality series, 'Design Star,' is getting back into an Empire state of mind.
The fifth season of the show returns to its original location, New York. But that's not the only change in store, according to judge Genevieve Gorder, who spoke to TV Squad by phone yesterday.
Gorder and fellow judges Vern Yip and Candice Olsen take on hosting duties from Clive Pearse. They get more involved in creating the challenges, following the contestants' work from start to finish and mentoring them throughout the entire design process.
A fabulous season is in store for viewers, one that was "a lot more fun," Gorder said.
Check out what else she had to say about 'Hgtv Design Star.'

After four seasons of hosting Design Star, Clive Pearse is out as part of the makeover the series is getting for its fifth season, which debuts in June. Clive Pearse will not appear at all this season, and an Hgtv spokesperson told me that there's "no designated host" because the three "judges are now taking on the hosting role, where they're assigning the challenges to the finalists, checking out the finalists' work in-person." That's "in...

The Hgtv reality show Design Star is really just one big job audition in front of millions of viewers. Each week contestants must complete interior design challenges such as making over an entire kitchen in 26 hours with only a $20,000 budget, and each week one designer is told by host Clive Pearse that their show has been canceled.
The pressure is high, but the stakes are higher: the winner is guaranteed their own show on Hgtv.
Openly gay designer David Bromstad won the first season, and between his gorgeous looks, sweet personality, and massive talent, his show Color Splash has gone on to become one of the cable channel's most popular series.
Unfortunately, while the next two seasons featured at least one or two gay designers among the hopefuls, none have managed to repeat David's success. Is that about to change as we go deeper into the fourth season?...
