To the typical American mainstream movie fan, The Ultimate Force of Four Blu-ray box set may be a treasure trove of remastered “Kung Fu” flicks. Though not the best the genre has to offer, it does contain some of the biggest hits on these shores since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon first arrived and opened the eyes of an unsuspecting populace.
Included in the Blu-ray set is the 1994 Jackie Chan film The Legend of Drunken Master which was released in the States in 2000. Directed by Chia-Liang Liu, Chan defends the honor of the Chinese people by kicking, punching and leaping off buildings in order to stop the heinous transfer of Chinese treasures by the evil British. Though The Legend of Drunken Master, isn’t the best example of the genre nor Chan’s best, it’s a favorite for easy Sunday afternoon movie watching. Considering Chan’s energy and dynamic action »

The revolution has begun. After years of American directors poaching from Asian works, and years of lesser known Asian productions blatantly copyright infringing American films (I'm looking at you, Lady Terminator), a Chinese director is remaking an American horror film. House of Flying Daggers director Yimou Zhang is partnering with Sony Pictures Classics to remake Blood Simple - the debut film from the Coen Brothers. Alright - so it's not exactly a horror film, but tell me you weren't scared when you saw M. Emmet Walsh's face as he's chasing Abby. Call it neo-noir, call it thriller, but no matter what it's scary as hell. When Blood Simple first came out, it got a ton of positive response, and it's only detractors seemed to focus on a choice of style over substance. That oddly seems perfect for a director like Zhang who has a fantastic visual style. There will be a few changes to the story »

It's been awhile since I've seen Blood Simple, but it was the introductory film of the Coen Brothers. It gave us a preview of the madness and glory to come. Director Yimou Zhang has decided to put his own spin on it. Yimou has been involved with some amazing films such as The Story Of Qiu Ju, House Of Flying Daggers, and the most recent Curse Of The Golden Flower. Sony Pictures Classics, Michael Barker and Tom Bernard released this statement on the re-imagining, "The idea of a remake... »

Yes, you read that right. Fully rested up following the flying gymnast / CGI fireworks jamboree that was the Beijing Olympics 2008, Zhang Yimou has embarked on his next project: a Hong Kong transposition of the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple.San Qiang Pi An Jing Qi, which we're told roughly translates as The Stunning Case of the Three Gunshots, went before cameras on June 9th. It stars Sun Hong Lei (Seven Swords), and will be Zhang's first film since the camp-as-Christmas Curse of the Golden Flower in 2006.Zhang's recent CV is all about massively colourful martial arts spectacle (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), so it's hard to immediately see quite how the Coens' dry-humoured slow-burn is going to translate. But step back a few years to before Zhang's wushu, scrapping-on-wires phase and you start to see how it might work. Are we looking at a return to Zhang's more contemporary movies like 1997's black comedy Keep Cool? »

The last time we heard from Chinese director Zhang Yimou, he was busy orchestrating the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Looks like he’s ready to get back behind the camera. His latest is a movie called “Amazing Stories: Three Guns”, which according to Variety, will be split into two parts, a suspense-thriller and a comedy. Other than that, there’s no other information on what the movie is about, although actors Sun Honglei, Ni Dahong, Xiao Shenyang and Wang Xiaohua are lined up to star. Yimou’s last movie was 2006’s “Curse of the Golden Flower”, and before that, “The House of Flying Daggers”, which is currently on the remake chopping block courtesy of Sam Raimi and company. Besides “Three Guns”, Yimou is scheduled to choreograph a huge parade in October to mark the 60th anniversary of the Communist Party’s accession to power, cause ol »

The latest big rumor surrounding Hollywood remakes connects horror movie director Sam Raimi and the Oscar nominated Chinese film House of Flying Daggers. I’m afraid so, folks. Industry magazine Production Weekly listed a House of Flying Daggers remake in their December issue with Raimi set to produce alongside Josh Donen (The Quick and the Dead, Drag Me to Hell) and Ryan Carroll (Toolbox Murders). The original film, released in 2004 and directed by Yimou Zhang, was nominated for an Oscar in 2005 for Achievement in Cinematography under the film’s Director of Photography Xiaoding Zhao. The film was also nominated in the 2005 Golden Globe category for Best Foreign Film. With [...] »

Chinese director Zhang Yimou is taking legal action against the publisher and author of a new biography of the filmmaker, accusing them of damaging his reputation with allegations of a love triangle.
He is demanding a public apology for the book, titled Documenting China - Zhang Yimou's Biography, which claims The House of Flying Daggers filmmaker fell out with his wife over his alleged feelings for actress Gong Li.
The tome, released in China in August, has already been removed from shop shelves following Zhang's lawyer Tong Jie's condemnation of the book in December.
In a statement released last month, Tong said, "A large part of the content in the book is a series of rumours, reckless fabrications, and seriously violates Zhang Yimou's name, image and privacy rights."
A lawsuit against publisher Huaxia and writer Huang Xiaoyang was filed last Tuesday, according to local reports.
Zhang directed Li in movies including 2006's Curse of the Golden Flower, 1994's Huonze, and 1987's My Grandma. »
