Zach Braff's 2004 coming-of-quarter-age film "Garden State" was met with warm acceptance upon its release. The general critical consensus seemed to be that Braff took a lot of the insecurities and anxieties of being in your mid-20s, and spun it into a moody, soulful rendition for a new generation.
Shortly after its release, however, "Garden State" was held up as an ur example of an unfortunate emerging character type: The Manic Pixie Dream Girl. The actual phrase was coined by critic Nathan Rabin in his description of Cameron Crowe's 2005 film "Elizabethtown," reviewed in his book "My Year of Flops." The Mpdg character was a seemingly perfect, often impish and energetic female, usually written specifically to drag a mopey male character out of the doldrums of their own personal drama. They were a therapist, a love object, and a prize all at once, and the character type was appearing with increasing ubiquity.

Of the many things that have had fans going bonkers for the “Elseworlds” crossover, one of the first treats for DC fans arrived in the form of two nods to Smallville. Long story short, the same exterior location used for the Kent farm on the beloved Superman prequel series made its return on Sunday night during an episode of The Flash – and Remy Zero’s main title theme accompanied it, much to my delight.
Well, apparently there’s more to come on that front, and it may very well pertain to that show’s version of Green Arrow. If you’ll remember, eagle-eyed viewers were able to spot a fallen Emerald Archer sporting Justin Hartley’s threads during the prologue scene taking place on Earth-90.
Confirming the return of the classic costume was that of executive producer Marc Guggenheim, who posted a cryptic picture of it over on Twitter. Furthermore,...

Going into the Arrowverse’s big crossover “Elseworlds,” we were prepared for it to reference The CW’s previous DC show Smallville. We’d already been shown the opening scene, for example, which featured the Superman prequel series’ version of Green Arrow as a neat (if tragic) easter egg. That turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg, though, as part one of the three-night event went above and beyond in pleasing Smallville fans.
After realizing that their identities have been switched and everyone on their earth believes they’re each other, Barry Allen and Oliver Queen travel to Earth-38 to get Supergirl’s help. Specifically, they visit Clark Kent’s hometown of Smallville, Kansas, and as they arrive there, the Smallville theme song blasts onto the soundtrack. For those who don’t know, it’s Remy Zero’s “Save Me,” which has been burned into viewers’ heads...

“Oh, Barry, what have you done this time?”
The Arrowverse’s “Elseworlds” crossover kicked off with a body swap/quantum leap on Sunday night’s The Flash, and Oliver Queen couldn’t help but think that the scarlet speedster was behind the switcheroo. (With the amount of timeline-tampering Barry has done, it is the obvious first guess.)
The eventful first hour offered up plenty of hijinks and heartwarming exchanges. Here, we highlight five moments that made us laugh, cheer, awww or, in one case, left us concerned about a certain couple:

[This story contains spoilers from part one of The CW's DC crossover "Elseworlds."]
When The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl crossed over Sunday for the first part of the highly-touted “Elseworlds” arc, The CW dramas paid homage to an unexpected series: Smallville.
During The Flash hour of the event, Barry (Grant Gustin) and Arrow’s Oliver (Stephen Amell) woke up to discover they were trapped in one another's lives. But while the issue persisted on Earth-1, they realized Supergirl’s Kara (Melissa Benoist), who lives on Earth-38, might be immune from whatever was going on.

Show of hands if you spent a lot of college listening to Remy Zero or Paula Cole on your Winamp?
Okay, you can put your hands down. (We can't see them.) But, we can see why you opened up your ears to the aforementioned artists -- they blessed us with two of the best teen TV show theme songs in the history of time.
From "Smallville's" apt "Save Me," to "I Don't Want to Wait" from "Dawson's Creek," we've assembled more memorable themes you shouldn't feel embarrassed adding to your Spotify.
7. "My So-Called Life Theme" From "My So-Called Life" (1994 - 1995)
If high-school angst and nostalgia had theme music, this would be it. No lyrics, just all the feels.
6. 'Where You Lead" From "Gilmore Girls" (2000 - 2007)
The Gilmores arguably have the most "fall as f**k" theme ever made. Which probably explains why we never fast-forward through it during our binge watching sessions.

Mad Men is ending, and while the show's opening credits are inseparable from RJD2's haunting theme, there was a time when that beat was known only as "A Beautiful Mine," by RJD2 and rapper Aceyalone.
Matthew Weiner originally wanted a Beck song to play as the show's opening theme, but the singer turned down every offer from the show's producers. Weiner was driving and listening to NPR one day when he heard "A Beautiful Mine" played as segue music between two stories and was immediately struck by it, though the version that ultimately was used was so different from...

It's movie week on "American Idol" Season 13, so fingers crossed we don't have to hear any "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing." Let's get right to it, shall we?
1. Sam Woolf, "Come Together," "Across the Universe"
Nice how the Beatles' catalog was made into a movie, right? Handy for moments like this. Anyway, we love this choice by Sam. He's a good singer, but he's been so blah on the show thus far. This is actually letting him show a little grit and growl. It's still a sliding scale -- he's not Caleb Johnson -- but for Sam, this is positively edgy. He could've gone much, much further with it and not been quite so Broadway at moments, but we'll take what we can get. Baby steps.
2. Jessica Meuse, "The Sound of Silence," "The Graduate"
Love the choice. I barely typed a word for the first half of the song because I was so engrossed.

“I can’t believe I agreed to this,” Bruce muttered, as he locked the front door of Wayne Manor.
“Hey, Bats!” a cheerful voice exclaimed from behind. Bruce turned.
“Peter,” he grumbled at the young man standing in the driveway. “I told you not to call me that when I’m out of the suit.”
“Sorry, Bats! Forgot,” Peter Parker replied merrily.
Bruce groaned inwardly. Here we go again, he thought. “Peter, what are you doing here?” he asked.
“I came to keep you company on the drive!” said Peter. “Plus, you know… Alfred thought if I didn’t, you might not come.”
“So… you came all the way out here just to turn around and go right back?” Bruce said wryly, walking to the car.
“Well, you know, it’s quick when you’re swinging through the air with the greatest of ease.” Peter grinned. “And Aunt May also...

Compilation albums are great fun, aren’t they? I’ve talked at some length before about them, and how they can be hit or miss with their intended audiences. Silva Screen Records’ latest offering – Super Themes – is no different, but it does contain a lot of really great tunes that the cult fan will appreciate having in their collection. While there are some moments where you just want to know what the criteria was in order to be picked, some are really spot-on.
The two-disk set is chock full of goodies spanning the last 40-plus years of superhero television and movies, and much of it is great. From the swinging sixties we have jazz composer Neal Hefti’s surf guitar theme for Batman, which is one of those guilty pleasures every geek can enjoy. Last week saw the tragic death of much-beloved Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, and on New Year's Day, the music world lost another great skinsman. Gregory Slay, who was known best for playing the drums in underrated turn-of-the-century alt-rock band Remy Zero, passed away on Friday (January 1) after a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis (a hereditary disease that leads to complications in the lungs). Slay was 40 years old.
Remy Zero was founded in Birmingham, Alabama in 1990. They caught their first break when Radiohead — who at the time were not the cultural touchstone they became after the release of Ok Computer — heard their demo tape and invited them to open for them while they toured the U.S. for The Bends. That got them attention from Geffen Records, who signed them and released their self-titled debut album in 1996. It's a twitchy, pyched-out, druggy debut that is best summed up...

Milano and Bugliari exchanged vows under a wrought-iron gazebo decorated with willow, calla lilies and roses. Actor Bradley Cooper, who is a friend of the groom, was seen attending the nuptials.

New claim has just emerged that Alyssa Milano will wed her fiance David Bugliari next week. Citing several Internet reports, the pair is said to exchange wedding vows on August 15 in a ceremony held at a private home in New Jersey.

After dreamy Nebraska duo Azure Ray disbanded in 2004, Orenda Fink (who made up one-half of the duo, along with Maria Taylor) has kept busy, releasing one solo album (2005's Invisible Ones) and another with side-project Art in Manila (2007's Set the Wood on Fire). Most recently, she formed the duo O+S with longtime friend Scalpelist (née Remy Zero bassist Cedric Lemoyne). The new duo's self-titled debut, released in March on Saddle Creek, is a deeply textured sonic collage of gauzy harmonies, field recordings and moody instrumentation. The ethereally-voiced Fink recently took some time to chat with Paste about O+S and the new music's inspirations and influences. ...

As reported by Marc Malkin of E! News, the actress and her fiance hosted a feast at a private home just outside of Los Angeles on Saturday night, May 2.
There were 150 people attending the affair, including the likes of Milo Ventimiglia and Jon Heder. The guests were treated to grilled salmon and rosemary chicken breast along with specialty Corzo tequila cocktails. They were served with a frozen yogurt bar and red velvet cupcakes for the dessert.
And while the party was going on, a DJ provided the music for dancing, E! News has reported.
