Producer Christopher Young spent 20 years passionately backing unpopular cult films – so how did he end up with The Inbetweeners Movie on his cv?
Call it the Slumdog syndrome, or the King's Speech complex. A massive, unexpected hit movie comes along, outside the precision-engineered channels of the studio system. Obviously the shop-window people – the actors, the director – get a lot out of it. But behind the scenes, the transformation can be even more radical; the producer will suddenly become the most feted figure in the industry. Slumdog Millionaire turned Christian Colson into a major industry player. Iain Canning and Emile Sherman became overnight heavyweights after The King's Speech. Now, a little something called The Inbetweeners Movie, and its £41m box-office take, has instantly turned its Scottish producer, Christopher Young, into the man everyone wants to do business with.

Could Lars von Trier have finally destroyed his own career?
The big story
Every week is Lars von Trier week – especially if you're Lars von Trier. But the Danish director, normally so adept at winding up the press and film industry, may have finally put his foot irretrievably in it, have gone that bit too far, gone off the deep end once too often. When he made a crack at Cannes back in May about how he could "understand" Adolf Hitler, I bet he didn't think he'd be fielding questions from the Danish police five months later.
But that is what happened last Wednesday, according to a statement issued by von Trier himself. He said his local bobbies were acting on a "preliminary charge" issued by French prosecutors after his Cannes press conference. Even now, it's not clear if von Trier himself has the full story: the French authorities have...

Now that the misadventures of Will, Jay, Neil and Simon in The Inbetweeners Movie are a massive great hit at the UK box office (£39.4 million and counting), the two sick minds behind the characters, writers Iain Morris and Damon Beesley are using their newfound clout to start cracking on a follow-up. But it won’t be featuring the saddos:, it’s a new comedy called Mortal.Beesley and Morris have already cranked out the first draft of the script, which finds two brothers and their mates travelling off the coast of northern Scotland to spread the ashes of their father.Sounds like it could be a little more sombre than a bunch of idiots looking for sex in sunny climes, but we bet there’s plenty of scope for misbehaviour. And whether or not any of the cast sign up, it’s already looking like something of an Inbetweeners reunion,...

• Shane Allen: serious support for comic talent
The Inbetweeners Movie has overtaken Bridget Jones sequel The Edge of Reason to record the biggest box office opening of any UK comedy with takings of more than £13m.
The spin-off from the E4 comedy series in which the four teenage school friends go on holiday in Malia took £13.2m on its opening weekend including previews on Wednesday and Thursday last week.

Following on from the previews figures that we saw last week, it’s no surprise that we’ve just heard that The Inbetweeners Movie (our review here) has raked in a massive £13.2m at the UK box office in the past 4 days breaking the previous record for a UK comedy which was previously held by Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason.
I’ve placed the official press release below for your viewing pleasure but with figures like this, does that mean that there could be room (or requirement?!) for a sequel to the extremely popular Channel 4 series movie? As an UK going audience, the answer would surely be yes!
During the Big Screen weekend last week, I attended The Inbetweeners panel which was attended by the writers of both the series and the movie, I asked that very question to the writers of The Inbetweeners, Iain Morris, Damon Beesley...

I was away from my computer all day yesterday on a cracking set visit which you can hear all about in around a year from now (!) but while I was away, we received this press release to show that even though The Inbetweeners Movie isn’t officially out until today, it still smashed it at the box office ot bring in over £2.5m on it’s first preview day! Not bad for a movie that didn’t get any screenings before the premiere!
The movie follows on from the awesome TV series where our favourite characters played by Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas, Emily Head and Belinda Stewart-Wilson. This time we get to see Simon, Jay, Neil and Will head on their holidays to do their best to find the woman of their dreams!
Our review of the movie will go live later today.
