- A few weeks back I finally had the opportunity to catch the Spanish horror flick [Rec] and was totally blown away. My buddies and I quickly got into a debate on the state of horror cinema over the last few years. I contended that truly horrifying movies have been superseded for jump scares and gritty violence (or torture porn). Case in point: Alexandre Aja, who made a splash in the horror community with Haute Tension -- a film that despite its glossy look, is almost offensively bad and completely overrated. He followed that up with the remake for Wes Craven’s classic The Hills Have Eyes, another stylistic blood bath without bite. The man has certainly found a niche, so when I saw the trailer for Fox’s Mirrors yesterday I couldn’t even tell it was from the same filmmaker.
