On paper Open Grave sounded like yet another “homage” to the likes of Buried. After all its the tale of a man who wakes up on the titular open grave – that alone was enough to spark comparisons for me. How wrong could I have been…
Directed by Gonzalo López-Gallego (Apollo 18), Open Grave stars Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) as a man who wakes up in a pit full of corpses with no memory. He’s rescued by a mute Chinese woman who leads him back to a house where there are four other people who have all “awoke” with the same loss of memory and total lack of idea who they are and why they are there.

In Open Grave, Sharlto Copley’s character experiences one of the worst rude awakenings possible: waking up in a pit on a bed of corpses. And that’s only the beginning of a very bad day for the poor guy, as he also faces memory loss and a group of gun-toting strangers. If you didn’t catch it in theaters, you’ll soon have the chance to see Copley and company fight for their lives in Open Grave’s upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release.

I’ve heard both good and bad things about Open Grave, but I am a fan of Sharlto Copley, so I plan to watch it anyway. I don’t know anything about it at all, I’ve never even watched a trailer, but the press release describes it as a “gritty zombie thriller”, so it could go either way. I skip most of the zombie movies these days, unless someone I trust tells me it’s worth a watch. From the sounds of this one, it could be interesting, and Sharlto has an interesting enough on-screen persona to make most movies he is in at least watchable. The disc drops on July 15th from Cinedigm. You can pre-order your copy here.

A serial killer is stalking Oxford in autumn 1966, and Vivienne Haldane, wife of an eminent physicist at the university, is the latest victim. Morse quickly establishes a pattern to the murders; apart from the fact that all three dead women were found with a particular brand of expensive silk stocking, ‘Le Minou Noir’, around their necks, each was married, but has had her wedding ring removed by the killer. Pathologist Dr DeBryn finds that Mrs Haldane had had intercourse not long before her death, but it was certainly not with husband Rufus (Michael Thomas), from whom she had long been estranged. A bleak and twisted “murder” mystery in the vein of Identity with the sensibilities of Saw, Open Grave delights in toying with the audience’s deductive prowess and is as much a whodunit as it is a whyisit (hereby coined). In presenting us, initially at least, with a simple setup, the film capitalizes on a straight forward tale that quickly spirals into a surreal nightmare for all those involved.
Strong performances from relative unknowns and up and comers, plenty of stomach churning imagery (made all the more hard hitting for our characters due to the fact that it’s all shrouded in mystery) and revelations that emerge in an unforced manner, all make for an intense watch. The ironic downside to this bloody riddle is that it offers up so many tantalizing options for what will comprise its climax that the actual outcome (though strong) seems diluted against the crazy...

Starring District 9‘s Sharlto Copley, Open Grave is being released by Tribeca Film on VOD this week, with a digital and limited theatrical release to follow in the coming weeks. If you’d like more information, we have the official trailer, synopsis, and theater list:
“A man (Sharlto Copley, District 9, Elysium) wakes up in a pit of dead bodies with no memory of who he is or how he got there. Fleeing the scene, he breaks into a nearby house and is met at gunpoint by a group of terrified strangers, all suffering from memory loss. Suspicion gives way to violence as the group starts to piece together clues about their identities, but when they uncover a threat that’s more vicious — and hungry — than each other, they are forced to figure out what brought them all together — before it’s too late.”

Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.

Talk about weird.... Remember Apollo 18 from director Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego? Yeah I just referenced that flick in our review for Europa Report which happened to sort of star Sharlto Copley. Now Copley has a new flick on its way with Lopez-Gallego at the helm called Open Grave.
The flick's been kicking around since 2012 and it's just now seeing the light of day. Though no official synopsis available yet we do have the artwork, a still gallery, and the Italian trailer for you to dig on.
Open Grave centers on a man who wakes up in a remote wilderness with no memory in a pit full of dead bodies and must determine if the murderer is one of the strangers who rescued him, or if he himself is the killer. Thomas Kretschmann, Josie Ho, Joseph Morgan, Erin Richards, and Max Wrottesley also star.

While the debate continues to rage about the role celebrities/people-with-connections should have to crowd-funding projects, the bottom line is this paradigm breaking approach is helping to get ambitious projects of all sizes get made. The latest example is "The Cosmonaut," which found support from over 4000 backers to help bring it to the big screen. Today, we have a taste of the sci-fi movie as it begins to roll out. A years in the making effort, kicking off with a short film version in 2008, the movie's progress to the big screen is fascinating (it's detailed right here) and it included losing financing from a Russian backer at one point, only for the crowd-funding community to come back and support "The Cosmonaut" with three times as much money than they were short. But it's all about the final result and writer/director Nicolás Alcalá seems to have made those who got behind him proud.
