Oscar voting started on March 5 and will continue until March 10, so before those last ballots are entered, here are 11 dark horse contenders I hope voters keep in mind for nominations.
SEEWill ‘Two of Us’ extend France’s nominations lead at Oscars for Best International Feature?
Best Actor: Delroy Lindo, “Da 5 Bloods” — It’s strange to consider him a dark horse candidate since he seemed like a safe bet just a couple of months ago. But this towering performance full of Shakespearean anger, ache, and even a soliloquy was overlooked by the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. But he deserves a seat at the table, especially since it would be the first Oscar nomination for the legendary actor.
Best Actor: Mads Mikkelsen, “Another Round” — This front-runner for Best International Feature wouldn’t work as well as it does were it not for Mikkelsen’s charisma and ability to walk such...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pieces, including last year’s winner “Little Women.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Costume Design.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 71 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2019 winner “Black Panther,” and recent champs “Alice in Wonderland...

What will the costume design branch of the Academy favor this year? Will it be the lushness of period, or will voters favor something else, something contemporary? Or will they pick a winner who lands in the history books?
Whoever they choose, there are a plethora of eras to select from. David Fincher’s “Mank,” n will most likely nab a wealth of craft nominations and maybe even go home with Oscar in several categories.
Costume designer Trish Summerville is no stranger to Fincher’s world, having worked on “Gone Girl” and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” Summerville brought the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood with gowns and suits to “Mank.” Her costumes on the grand black-and-white “Mank” have been garnering awards buzz since the first photos were released. And many consider her the front-runner in this category.

When Armando Iannucci helmed “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” the one instruction he gave his craftspeople was to go bright.
For those familiar with the book and any of the previous iterations, Iannucci’s version is far from bleak and dark — instead, it’s a comedy with Dev Patel in the starring role.
While Iannucci keeps the Dickensian themes of loss, poverty and the powerful abusing the weak, he injects humor and focuses on the story as one of “great celebration about neighborliness, community, imagination and optimism.”
Below, Iannucci and his craftspeople tell Variety how they infused vibrancy into this much-loved classic and turned it into a family film.
Production designer Cristina Casali on transforming a Northern English town into Dickensian London

It is not entirely clear when The Personal History of David Copperfield takes place, mainly because, as far as we understand, it is not entirely clear when Charles Dickens’ original novel takes place either. If we go on its initially published serial timeline that puts the story at circa 1849, allowing for a few years either side. Point is; it’s the Victorian era. This period in history was lengthy, however, with many technical and industrial advances, such as the advent of aniline dyes – basically the first synthetic dyes – in the latter half of the 19th century. And, boy, did those Victorians go wild for a bit of colour.
Red was a massively popular Victorian dye colour, in all variations from crimson to cherry to blush to garnet (we’re referring to female clothing here by the way). Depending on setting, period and cultural significance, red has many connotations. It could potentially symbolise passion,...

“The Personal History of David Copperfield” was the big winner at Sunday’s British Independent Film Awards taking home five trophies: Best Supporting Actor for Hugh Laurie, Best Screenplay for Simon Blackwell and director Armando Iannucci, Best Casting (Sarah Crowe), Best Production Design (Cristina Casali), and Best Costume Design (Suzie Harmon and Robert Worley).
But while Iannucci’s film will undoubtedly continue to gain recognition for its below-the-line crafts, the writer/director is firm that his film is not just “a neatly tied-up period drama.” Rather, he characterizes it as “celebrating the Britishness that we don’t hear much about at the moment.” As he explains, “It’s so tempting to see Britain as isolated and withdrawn and serious at the moment. We forget that actually, for most people, Britain is funny, outgoing, generous and is about community. And that’s what this film is a celebration of.”

Oscar-winning French actress Juliette Binoche has been added as a talent ambassador for the 4th edition of the International Film Festival & Awards Macao (Iffam), which runs Dec 5-10 this year. Binoche joins Hong Kong star Carina Lau and K-pop performer and actor Kim Junmyeon on the ambassador roster. She will also take part in an ‘in conversation’ event at the festival, and will attend the screening of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s The Truth, in which she stars. “Iffam’s main mission is to showcase the best of world cinema and there is nobody more representative of what that means than Juliette Binoche,” said Mike Goodridge, artistic director of Iffam. Despite the current troubles in nearby Hong Kong, organizers said Iffam was presently unaffected and would be going ahead as planned.

While Armando Iannucci‘s “Veep” failed to turn any of its nominations in to wins at this year’s Emmys, the writer/director is all but certain to get some love from the BAFTAs and Oscars for his new film “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Iannucci’s lovingly crafted adaptation of his favorite of Charles Dickens‘ novels opened the BFI London Film Festival and was very well-received.
The cast is refreshingly diverse for a period piece. This color blind casting makes the film feel very modern. Today’s audiences will recognise and relate to these Victorian era characters. In the titular role, Dev Patel stands out even among a collection of more colorful characters. Hugh Laurie, Gwendoline Christie, Daisy May Cooper, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, Benedict Wong, Paul Whitehouse and the (ex) Doctor himself Peter Capaldi all have standout moments in the film with Christie being my personal favorite...

“Slumdog Millionaire” and “Lion” star Dev Patel toplines period Charles Dickens drama “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” Armando Iannucci’s followup to “The Death of Stalin,” which will have its European premiere on opening night October 2 at the Odeon Luxe, Leicester Square at the BFI London Film Festival. This year’s festival runs October 3 to 13.
This date means the film will first play one or more stateside festivals: Telluride, Toronto, or New York, where American buyers will first check out the film. FilmNation is handling international rights, with UTA co-repping the U.S. sale.
Iannucci’s witty dialogue and the detailed Victorian setting should be catnip for BAFTA and Academy voters, along with a starry cast including Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw, Paul Whitehouse, Gwendoline Christie, and Aneurin Barnard.
