Who is the auteur of a production, the individual whose style and sensibility most shapes it? When it comes to film, the matter, for most people, was long ago settled by the journos-turned-filmmakers at Cahiers du Cinema over in France and critic Andrew Sarris back here in the states: the director. But what is the answer to that same question when it applies to the television? Because the medium inherently requires a much longer commitment from those who work in it, I think it’s even more of a relevant and interesting query, and I believe that I know the answer.
In television, directors, writers, and even actors tend to come and go over the course of a show’s run, and rarely have the final say on creative matters. Showrunners, however, are involved before the lights turn, and they tend to be the last ones to leave the room after the lights go out.

Vanilla Ice has joined the Adam Sandler/Andy Samberg movie I Hate You Dad. He plays an old friend of Adam Sandler’s character, who is Andy Samberg’s father. It’s reported on some sites that he’ll be playing a gay wedding planner.
The Parent’s Television Council is demanding that the FCC force Comcast to pledge that it “will not use the public airwaves to distribute pornographic material.” The demand stems from reports that their Playboy pilot has nudity clauses in the actor’s contracts, likely for the DVD version and international distribution. In no way has Comcast indicated the slightest intention to broadcast nudity.
Since the Bronx Zoo cobra is now a celebrity, the zoo has decided it needs an actual name. But they’re letting the public do the naming, so if you’ve got ideas, pitch them. We promise they don’t bite.

In casting news, Desperate Housewives/Hawaii Five-0’s Mark Deklin has been cast as Blake Caruth, husband of Crickett on Good Christian Bitches. The casting notice describes him as “metrosexual” but we know that he’s actually more than that.
George Michael has announced a new single, “Every Other Lover In the World” as well as a new tour, via his Twitter. And he’d like to remind you, he never said he wasn’t touring any more, just not doing arena tours any more.
It’s a new round of voting in E!’s Alpha Male Madness. Neil Patrick Harris is still in the running, as is Darren Criss. It’s the Sweet Sixteen round, so go vote until it hurts.
The nasty bill in Montana seeking to overturn any municipal Glbt protections in the state has died a quiet death in committee.
I may be alone here, but...
