Chloé Zhao picked up four Oscar nominations for “Nomadland” this year as its producer, director, writer, and editor, winning the categories of Best Picture and Best Director. Zhao has been a credited editor on two of her films, “Songs My Brother Taught Me” and “Nomadland,” receiving sole editor credit on her recent Oscar winner. The director confirmed to Variety following the 93rd Academy Awards that for “Eternals,” her upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe tentpole and major studio filmmaking debut, she is not the editor. That credit is being shared by Dylan Tichenor and Craig Wood.
“No. I’m working with two incredible editors, Wood and Tichenor,” Zhao said when asked if she’s editing “Eternals” in addition to directing and co-writing the film. “And they’ve taught me so much. They were very patient with me, because they know it’s the first time that I’ve collaborated with editors that way.

In addition, Curtis Clark will be receiving the John A. Bonner Award for his service to the motion picture industry.

Marvel Studios and James Gunn have officially announced the start of principal photography on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Tiny Groot even came along for the first cast image!
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista return to portray Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax, along with Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel lending their voices to Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, and Karen Gillan also return as Yondu, Kraglin, and Nebula.
New faces to join the cast include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), Chris Sullivan (The Knick) and Kurt Russell are all officially onboard. Their characters have yet to be revealed, but I really hope Russell plays a bad guy, with a very long mustache perhaps.

Director Brad Bird and his co-writer Damon Lindelof take on a daring, ambitious science fiction project: chosen 'dreamers' are given glimpses of a gleaming Future City on the Horizon that exists in a parallel dimension of possibility. It's a chase film, a touchstone 'Sense of Wonder' epic and a wholly original visual extravaganza. The spacey gee-whiz thrills are linked to a worthy message, the rescue of a dying planet. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,...

This may be the hardest review I've ever had to write. After all, I think Brad Bird is a certifiably great filmmaker. I have been a fan of his work as long as I've seen his name on things, starting with "Family Dog," the animated episode of "Amazing Stories." So of course, I walk into his films hoping to like them. The year it was released, "The Incredibles" was my pick as best film, and both "The Iron Giant" and "Ratatouille" have also found spots in my top ten lists at the end of the year. In fact, for years, one of the things I was proudest of in all of the work I've done writing about movies from the early days of Ain't It Cool News to right now involved "The Iron Giant." That film is beloved now, and deservedly so. There was a point, though, when it looked...

The first poster for Tomorrowland was definitely a ‘teaser,’ showing us just the T pin-badge that had such a key role in the teaser trailer. With a new, fuller trailer on the way on Monday, a new, fuller poster was in order.
Here’s that poster now, with several interesting new details.
First of all, it’s worth noting that the film’s protagonist is missing. Casey, as played by Britt Robertson is Tomorrowland’s lead character but she’s nowhere to be seen. And neither is Athena, the other young female character with a key part to play.
Instead, we have George Clooney as Frank and… well, we don’t know. But I’d bet on that being Thomas Robinson, also as Frank. This would mean that the same character, at two different points on his timeline, is standing in the same field, at the same point in the continuum.

The American Cinema Editors have taken the time when most of us are still enjoying a little bit of downtime before truly getting back into the swing of things this new year to announce the film and television nominees for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Among the nominees are a couple of personal favorites in Whiplash (Tom Cross) and The Imitation Game (William Goldbenbrrg). I also think something must be said for Boyhood, though editing a film over the course of 12 years doesn't really leave much wiggle room. You're essentially editing 12 short films because once you're a year removed... you're a year removed. There are six nominees in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category as a result of a tie providing for one additional nominee for the second time ever. Among the comedy/musical nominees I would like to believe The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling) would be the front-runner,...

The movie that stitched 12 years of footage into a single narrative, “Boyhood,” has been nominated by the American Cinema Editors as the best-edited dramatic feature of 2014, Ace announced on Friday.
Other nominees for the top dramatic film honor at the awards known as the Ace/Eddies are “American Sniper,” “Gone Girl,” “The Imitation Game,” “Nightcrawler” and “Whiplash.” The category had six nominees instead of five because of a tie.

If you were looking for things to be shaken up a little bit in this year's Oscar race, the American Cinema Editors (Ace) offered a slight jolt Friday with the organization's 65th annual list of nominees for film editing. And if you were wondering if "Nightcrawler" might make a serious play on the circuit, well… I will say I was wondering that. So much so that I had a piece prepped focusing on its potential before today's announcement, which included the film in a dramatic feature category that featured a tie for the first time ever. (The animated field saw a tie yielding four nominees in 2012, while "Babel" and "The Departed" actually tied for the dramatic win in 2006, but there hasn't been a tie leading to an extra nominee in the dramatic or comedy/musical categories before.) Powerhouse Oscar players "Boyhood" and "The Imitation Game" unsurprisingly joined the party, and ditto Sundance hit "Whiplash.

(Cbr) James Gunn, and many of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" cast members took part in a special Q&A in anticipation of today's trailer debut. To help debut the new full trailer for Marvel Studios' "Guardians of the Galaxy," the film's official Facebook page hosted a special question and answer session with director James Gunn, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, and cast members Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Karen Gillan. "The movie is as much James Gunn as it is Marvel. We remain true to the spirit of the comic. And I'm lucky to have a lot of similarities to Abnett [&] Lanning," said Gunn of the film. The director went on to state that viewers will "find out a little about [the Guardians'] pasts," that Troma Entertainment co-founder Lloyd Kaufman has a cameo in the film, and seemingly confirming that Thanos will appear. ("You'll have to wait and see,...

It seems that whilst Disney’s animation arm continues to be a big hit amongst audiences, some its live-action releases can’t seem to catch a break. Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful was a success for the studio in the spring, but Gore Verbinski’s summer blockbuster, The Lone Ranger, sadly seems to have fallen upon a similar fate as Andrew Stanton’s John Carter did last year.
One factor the two movies have both faced is the bad press. The impact of reviews is far from guaranteed – plenty of films receive terrible reviews from critics but are welcomed with open arms by audiences, and vice versa – and yet, with high-profile movies like these where word of mouth goes in place of an already established world, riding a wave of negative reviews is that much harder to overcome.

Director Carl Erik Rinsch' upcoming 3D fantasy 'samurai' action feature "47 Ronin", stars Keanu Reeeves as an 18th century warrior who seeks to avenge his master’s death.
"47 Ronin", inspired by ancient Japan’s story about the 'Samurai', stars Reeves as 'Kai', an outcast who joins 'Oishi'. the leader of the '47 Ronin'.
"...Together they seek vengeance on the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors..."
Production on the film started early in 2012, with the building of sets @ England's Shepperton studio sound stages and backlot, recreating 18th century Japan with a castle, fortress, tournament arena and village.

I don't typically see many documentaries every year, but since becoming a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (Bfca) it has become far easier (and necessary) to see more of them over the last two years. One, I have to nominate and vote on the category for the Critics' Choice Awards and two, I get more screeners each year than I used to. This year I've watched 14 documentaries and have yet only seen seven of the 15 documentaries up for Best Documentary at the 2013 Oscars. Of those seven, only one makes my top five of 2012. Outside of the five I list below, virtually all of the documentaries I watched this year were quite great, but seeing how I only saw 14, it didn't make sense to do a top ten. So if you're looking for some additional docs to watch other than my top five, also consider Bad 25 (which would...

If celluloid goes away are films still... films? This is just one of the many questions that ran through my mind before, after and while watching the spectacular documentary Side by Side. Here, producer and interviewer Keanu Reeves sits down with the cream of the crop when it comes to today's directors along with several cinematographers, colorists, editors and more to discuss the rise in digital filmmaking, the perceived bygone era of shooting on film, 3D, color-timing, visual effects, editing and more as the industry moves from shooting movies on film to capturing them 5,000 pixels at a time.
Participants include directors such as James Cameron, David Fincher, Danny Boyle, George Lucas, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, Lars Von Trier and the Wachowskis along with cinematographers including Dion Beebe, Wally Pfister, Michael Chapman and Anthony Dod Mantle and editors including Walter Murch and Craig Wood and this is...

A must-see for any cinephile this year is Christopher Kenneally‘s documentary on digital vs. film, Side by Side. Led by Keanu Reeves, in our review we called it extraordinary, in that its not only required viewing for those interested in film, but also wonderfully entertaining. The documentary sees Reeves interview top Hollywood pioneers including James Cameron, George Lucas, Danny Boyle, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan and as per usual in the genre, there was lots of left-over footage.
In a daily video series, Tribeca Films is releasing some extra clips from the films which featuring conversations that didn’t make the cut. There’s David Lynch discussing digital theatrical delivery, the Wachowskis on actors performances and editing, Martin Scorsese on celluloid, Wally Pfister on story, Steven Soderbergh on doing things different and much more. It’s great to hear the opinions of these tastemakers in Hollywood, including both sides of the coin.

By Sean O’Connell
hollywoodnews.com: The final weekend before the Academy Awards, which will be held on Feb. 26, was bustling with Guild recognitions as Oscar contenders jockey for position and wait for what remains the biggest “game” in the entertainment industry. But for Monday morning, let’s run through the last few awards that were handed out before the Oscars finally get here:

I can only hope that those fine folks behind the Scripter and Ace Eddie Awards don’t take umbrage at the fact that, before this morning, I had never heard of them. It doesn’t really matter, however; a few people are giving them a big thanks at this very minute, seeing as the two groups held their respective ceremonies just last night.
The Descendants earned the USC Libraries Scripter Award, which commemorates “the author and scribes of a produced literary work-to-film adaptation” — in this case, Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash, and Kaui Hart Hemmings, the lattermost of whom wrote the source material. That film and those four bested A Dangerous Method (Christopher Hampton and John Kerr), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Bridget O’Connor, Peter Straughan, and John le Carré), Jane Eyre (Moira Buffini and Charlotte Bronte), and Moneyball (Aaron Sorkin, Steve Zaillian, Stan Chervin, and Michael Lewis). I guess I could look at the win last night from the American Cinema Editors (Ace) for The Descendants for Best Editing in a dramatic feature as a sign we may still have an upset at the Oscars, but I think that would be overstepping my bounds. I will, however, say I think it shows The Descendants is a stronger #2 candidate for Best Picture than Hugo is as The Artist remains the clear front-runner in the Best Picture category as it also won last night for Best Editing in a comedy or musical. In the lackluster animation category Rango took the win over Puss in Boots and The Adventures of Tintin where, I guess, we could have seen Tintin win, but I'm having a hard time mustering up any kind of passion one way or another to really care. The Ace winners are listed below along with the other nominees.

George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, The Descendants The Descendants (Kevin Tent) and The Artist (Anne-Sophie Bion, Michel Hazanavicius) were the two live-action narrative features to win the 2012 American Cinema Editor Awards at a ceremony held this evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. That shows Ace Award voters opted for more subdued film editing jobs this year: The Descendants' competitors, for instance, included David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Steven Spielberg's War Horse, and Martin Scorsese's Hugo; one of The Artist's competitors was Paul Feig's hectic comedy Bridesmaids. [Full list of Ace Eddie Award winners/nominations.] Or perhaps Ace voters just wanted to reward someone new. Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
