- British film critic who reviewed films for the London "Sunday Express" newspaper for several years in the early 1960s and also wrote a noted film book called, simply, "Cinema". He left the paper to concentrate on a new career as a novelist, being replaced by Clive Hirschhorn.
- He wrote the first draft screenplay for "The Romantic Englishwoman", based on his own novel, and was extremely annoyed when director Joseph Losey hired Tom Stoppard to rewrite it.
