CIA Thriller Under Development at Fox

4 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Probably wholly unrelated to The Men Who Stare at Goats, Fox is nevertheless developing a CIA-themed project which will contain elements of paranormal abilities on the part of agency members.

According to Variety, the untitled spy thriller centers on a division of the CIA that specializes in "remote viewing"—the ability to gather information using paranormal means.

The skein comes from writer Harris Wilkinson (Stir of Echoes: The Homecoming) and Peter Chernin's new 20th Century Fox TV-based production company.

Chernin will executive produce the drama script through his Chernin Entertainment. Katherine Pope and Lauren Stein will also executive produce, and Len Wiseman is on board to direct.

We have to admit, with Fox's track record, this sounds really exciting. Imagine the possibilities: Episodes could range wider than the typical espionage/action show, and into exotic areas such as ancient civilizations, treasure, and technology; secret society financial manipulation; human-alien conspiracy »

Billy Ray Takes A Shot At The 'Gears Of War' Screenplay

27 October 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's been a little while since we've heard anything about the impending "Gears of War" movie adaptation, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been movement going on behind-the-scenes. In fact, it looks like a new soldier has been recruited into the fold to battle the Locust Horde.

According to /Film, screenwriter Billy Ray has been tapped to work on the script for "Gears of War," which is currently pegged as a Len Wiseman directing vehicle. Ray's work on the screenplay comes hot off the heels of "Wanted" scribe Chris Morgan, the most recent writer attached to the project.

It's currently unclear how Ray's version of "Gears of War" will differ from Morgan's, if at all. When Morgan spoke with MTV News earlier this year, he said that his take on the film was currently being budgeted out. He also had enough involvement in the project to weigh in on who »

Billy Ray Signs On For Gears of War

23 October 2009 9:35 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

On Thursday, Variety shared the news that screenwriter Billy Ray (State of Play) was set to take on the real life story of Captain Richard Phillips, the man who was held captive by Somali pirates for five days earlier this year. As interesting as it would be to see Captain Phillips’ dramatic escape brought to the big screen, there was a line at the bottom of the Variety article that was far more interesting: “He [Ray] is currently writing “Gears of War” for New Line.”

Wait? Gears of War? Last time we heard, that movie was being written by the team of Len Wiseman (Underworld) and Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast and Furious), with Wiseman as director. What happened? Brendon Connelly over at /Film speculates that Wiseman turned to Billy Ray after the duo worked successfully on the forthcoming film, Motorcade. Motorcade, if you’ll recall from our previous coverage, has been »

Billy Ray Taking Turn At Gears of War Screenplay

23 October 2009 3:59 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Earlier today, Russ told you that Billy Ray will be writing a ripped-from-the-headlines movie about Captain Richard Phillips vs. Somali Pirates. That's not Ray's only new writing gig, however, as he's also taking a crack at the Gears of War movie. Last we heard, director Len Wiseman was collaborating with Wanted scribe Chris Morgan on the project, superceding an ill-liked Stuart Beattie draft. Like that fellow with his One Red Paperclip, this sounds like a constant series of uptrades. So, how did Billy Ray get the gig? I'd imagine it's a case of who he knew, not what he knew. Ray has been working with director Wiseman on Motorcade recently, and it looks like that must have been a fruitful and pleasurable experience for the two of them to choose to do it all over again. I agree with Russ' position that Ray is a very talented filmmaker but that »

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: October 11, 2009

This week:

Vince Vaughn Retreats to the top of the box office; another comic book adaptation makes it way up the Gravel road to the big screen; Michael Bay kills The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Ryan Reynolds hitches a ride with Motorcade and New Line needs a Vacation - but will Chevy Chase be invited?

Box Office

Swingers duo Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau landed in the top spot with Couples Retreat. The comedy snatched an impressive $35 million from movie-goers despite bad reviews.

Woody Harrelson had to settle for second place with Zombieland. The horror-comedy took $15 million from Friday to Monday, dropping a decent 39%  - it looks like the film has a chance of hitting $100 million.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs banked another $12 million for third place. With $96 million in the bank it looks like Meatballs are going to be the order of the day.

Toy Stories 1 and 2 in 3D were fourth with another $7.5 million. »

Ryan Reynolds Wanted for Motorcade

8 October 2009 8:07 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

DreamWorks has had developing the Motorcade script by Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell on their agenda for years, but it never quite seemed to come together as a viable project. Now, however, with a little script doctoring and a celebrated TV producer/director attached, Motorcade seems done spinning its wheels.

Motorcade tells the story of an ousted Secret Service agent who happens to be on hand when the U.S. President is kidnapped. Originally planned as a Tom Cruise vehicle with Len Wiseman directing, the script for Motorcade is now being worked on by Billy Ray. Jon Cassar is attached as director, which would mark the 24 producer/director's first gig helming a theatrical production. Variety reports that Cruise is no longer in consideration for the lead role, with DreamWorks interested in casting Ryan Reynolds instead.

24 Director to Helm Motorcade Starring Ryan Reynolds

7 October 2009 11:25 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Dreamworks has tapped 24 co-executive producer Jon Cassar to helm Motorcade, with Ryan Reynolds in talks to star. You might recall hearing about Motorcade previously, as it is a hot action film project which has been fighting its way to the big screen over the last year since appearing on the 2008 Black List (a list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood). Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman was originally set to bring the project to the big screen, but moved on to Atlantis Rising. Most recently, Motorcade was at the top of a short list of potential projects that Tom Cruise was considering for his next film. Cruise eventually chose Wichita instead. Cassar has helmed 59 episodes of the popular Fox action television series 24. From my experience watching the show, it appears that Cassar can competently shoot action, but brings no style or flare to the storytelling. ... »

Ryan Reynolds to Rescue the President?

7 October 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Ryan Reynolds is in talks to join the cast of Jon Cassar’s (24) Motorcade for Dreamworks Pictures, in which Reynolds would play a the “disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time when the U.S. president is kidnapped in New York.”

That sounds like it could be pretty sweet. Reynolds is great in an action role.

The film will be produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. At one point, Tom Cruise was attached to star, back when Underworld’s Len Wiseman was attached to direct.

Reynolds hasn’t officially signed on yet — next, he’ll be making Green Lantern with Casino Royale director Martin Campbell.

More news on Motorcade as the film develops. Keep your eyes peeled!

Cassar to Protect 'Motorcade'

7 October 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- I've been keeping tags on Motorcade since I heard the project being pitched as an In the Line of Fire meets Black Hawk Down. Billy Ray's script would be featured on the Black List, and with DreamWorks waiting for their Paramount divorce to finalize, I imagine the project collected some dust. Variety reports that Jon Cassar (from television's 24) will replace Len Wiseman in the director's chair and Ryan Reynolds is now the leading frontman for the role of the disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time when the U.S. president is kidnapped in New York. Cassar has directed fifty-plus episodes Jack Bauer's misadventures - the high octane experience will certainly help with he format for this spec. Ray remains on board the project.  Production is expected to begin next year for a 2011 release.... »

Jon Cassar Climbs Aboard Motorcade

7 October 2009 4:05 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

DreamWorks has given a new lease of life to Motorcade, a project that has taken its time getting off the ground, by putting the film into the safe hands of Jon Cassar.

Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell originally drafted the script for the action thriller, telling the story of a disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time when the American President is kidnapped while driving in his motorcade through New York. Billy Ray then took over writing duties, and last year Len Wiseman was in talks to direct and Tom Cruise showed an interest in playing the lead.

Now it seems the man for the helmer's job is Cassar, who is best known for directing 59 episodes of 24, as well as the spinoff telepic, 24: Redemption. And although nothing has been signed on the dotted line yet, DreamWorks is eyeing up Ryan Reynolds for the lead role, »

Jon Cassar will direct DreamWorks Pictures' "Motorcade." Billy Ray works on the screenplay originated by Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell. Ryan Reynolds is being considered to star as a distrage Secret Service agent who is the wrong place at the right time when on the U.S. president is kidnapped during a visit to New York. Apparently, this was one of the projects Tom Cruise seriously considered when Len Wiseman ("Underworld," "Live Free or Die Hard") was attached to direct. »

Ryan Reynolds Taking Over for Tom Cruise in Motorcade

7 October 2009 1:36 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Earlier this year, before we knew that he would be starring in Wichita, Tom Cruise had about 7 potential projects lined up. One of them was Motorcade, an action thriller about a disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time when the president's motorcade is commandeered by terrorists in New York (it was originally set in Los Angeles). Variety reports that the project is switching actors - Cruise is out, Ryan Reynolds is in - and directors as well. Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman is being replaced by Jon Cassar, best known for directing over 50 episodes of Fox's series "24". DreamWorks is hoping to get this into production by late summer or early fall 2010. Reynolds is not signed on, but they're "eying" him, which I'm assuming means attempting to get him to join and looking at his schedule ... »

'24' guy Jon Cassar to direct 'Motorcade'

7 October 2009 12:43 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

I already completely forgot about DreamWorks' action flick "Motorcade," but it looks like the project is still alive and on its way to the next developmental stage, and that with a new director on board.

Variety says Jon Cassar, who helmed and produced a whole bunch of "24" episodes, has been set to direct "Motorcade," a film Len Wiseman was attached to helm for a while. Tom Cruise was attached to star.

Cassar and DreamWorks will try to make this film happen later next year, and the trade also says the studio is eyeing Ryan Reynolds for the lead role. No deal has been set up yet at this stage. »

Motorcade finds a director

7 October 2009 12:40 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

After plunging it back into development once Tom Cruise stopped considering it, DreamWorks is hauling presidential thriller Motorcade out of the mire for 24's Jon Cassar to direct. The film, which finds a disgraced secret service agent the only man who can help when the president is kidnapped in New York, originally had Len Wiseman attached behind the camera. But once Cruise ditched, he left too, and the studio currently wants Ryan Reynolds to take up the starring role. They've yet to get an answer from him, and he's fairly booked up at...

Ryan Reynolds To Board Motorcade?

Last we heard about Motorcade, Tom Cruise was set to star in the Len Wiseman-directed thriller - but one thing that never changes in Hollywood is the fact that things change. So now 24's Jon Cassar is directing and studio DreamWorks is chasing Ryan Reynolds to star.Of course, Reynolds is a bit busy right now gearing up for The Green Lantern, which starts shooting in the spring, but the hope is that this film will begin filming next summer or autumn, giving him time to do both. The story focuses on a disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the right place at the right time to help when the Us President is kidnapped in New York.Billy Ray (2009's State of Play, Flightplan) is currently rewriting the script, from Hans Bauer and Craig Mitchell's (The Flock) original. Ryan Reynolds to the Rescue in Motorcade

6 October 2009 9:07 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Not content to just mouth off as a superpowered merc or patrol the spaceways as an interstellar cop with yellow issues, Ryan Reynolds is currently in negotiations to board the action movie “Motorcade” for DreamWorks. Variety calls the movie a “drama”, but how can it possibly be a drama and not an action movie with a premise like this: Reynolds would play a disgraced Secret Service agent who happens to be in the wrong place at the right time when the U.S. president is kidnapped in New York. Come on, that screams action thriller! Or at least, “24″-esque. Which probably makes sense that Dreamworks has assigned former “24″ director/producer Jon Cassar to helm the project, taking over for Len Wiseman (”Live Free or Die Hard” and the “Underworld” films), who was attached to the movie a while back (with Tom Cruise interested, natch), but has since left for greener pastures. »

Underworld star Kate Beckinsale is the 'Sexiest Woman Alive'

6 October 2009 2:16 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Kate Beckinsale, known to sci-fi/fantasy fans for her rubber-clad role in the Underworld movies, has been named the Sexiest Woman Alive by Esquire magazine.

The English actress was also in monster romp Van Helsing and was most recently seen in the less-than-thrilling Antarctic thriller Whiteout, adapted from a graphic novel.

She was rumoured to be linked to a further Underworld film, reportedly the first film in another trilogy, but didn't know anything about it when asked.

Beckinsale, who married Underworld's director Len Wiseman in 2004, also denied being linked to the remake of Barbarella and won damages from the Daily Express who had falsely claimed she had lost out to Rose McGowan.

The 36-year-old expressed interest in playing Catwoman when on the panel for Whiteout at San Diego Comic-Con in 2007.

According to The Insider, she said: "Because I have a thing for black latex. I do, I know we all do. »

Bruce Willis Wants To Do More Die Hard-ing

6 October 2009 9:31 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

With Surrogates in theaters and enjoying a disappointing run, why wouldn't Bruce Willis want to return as John McClane in another Die Hard? Willis says it's all about the timing.

I would love to do another one but they better get it done soon, what with the march of time and all that. I'm not getting any younger.

Willis may be getting older, but he was spry enough to lift the fourth Die Hard installment, Live Free or Die Hard to $383 million worldwide. Around the time of Live Free's release, Willis told Cinematical that Fox was excited for another Die Hard.

Fox is already talking about doing another one. I told them I would only do it if [director] Len [Wiseman] is involved, and Maggie Q. And Justin [Long], of course. You can't do one without Justin.

Two years later, Willis must be getting anxious. Still, with older action stars like Sylvester Stallone »
