"Don't let your hands dictate what you think you can do. Look at fingerboard charts and imagine your eyes dancing on the notes you want to play, and forget about whether your hands can do it or not. Just try it."
Allan Holdsworth (6 August 1946 – 15 April 2017), British guitarist and composer. He released twelve studio albums as a solo artist and played a variety of musical styles spanning a period of more than four decades, but is best known for his work in prog rock and jazz fusion. He was in the super group U.K. with Bill Bruford, Eddie Jobson and John Wetton as well as Soft Machine, Pierre Moerlen's Gong, and The New Tony Williams Lifetime. An amazingly talented guitarist, his contributions to music will be missed. Rip, Mr. Holdsworth.

This week’s episode of Detective on Investigation Discovery traces the murder of rookie cop Troy Barboza by a man believed to be an associate of the La-based Crips gang. The episode, called Murder in Paradise, shines a spotlight on the fascinating story behind the case, which centered around revenge and greed. Barboza, 24, was killed with a shotgun at his home in Oahu, Hawaii, in October 1986 by a San Diego man who he was set to testify against in a case related to drugs. Tony Williams, also 24, was convicted after an eight-day trial in July 1987 and later sentenced to life without parole. Barboza...read more...

R.I.P., Mr. John Wetton, you provided many of the songs for the soundtrack of my youth with your bass playing, and vocals, in Roxy Music, King Crimson, Uriah Heap, Asia, and your debut album with the quartet U.K. embedded above. For me you reached the zenith of your artistic expression with said progressive rock super band. From 1977 until 1980, you, keyboardist/electric violinist Eddie Jobson (Curved Air, Roxy Music, Frank Zappa), guitarist Allan Holdsworth (Soft Machine, Tempest, The New Tony Williams Lifetime, Gong) through 1978, and drummer Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimson, tour drummer for Genesis), who was later replaced by drummer Terry Bozzio (formerly of Frank Zappa's band). There is some tremendous Youtube footage of the reformed U,K, with Wetton, Eddie Jobson and Terry Bozzio from their 2012 world tour. No doubt King Crimson, circa 1972 - 1974, boasting guitar maestro Robert Fripp, Wetton, violinist/keyboardist David Cross and drummer...

Widely and rightly regarded as not only one of the finest martial arts films ever made, but one of the greatest works in of all Chinese cinema, King Hu’s A Touch of Zen (Xia nü, 1971) is most often lauded for its extraordinary fight sequences. Why the film is so exceptional, however, is that as great as these fight scenes are (and they are spectacular), they may not even be the best part of the movie. With 180 minutes to work with in its complete uncut version, which will screen in a new 4K restoration at Film Forum April 22 through May 5, Hu launches A Touch of Zen above most of its genre, above even his own impressive output, amplifying the essentials of the martial arts film while infusing it with other cinematic ingredients. The first shot of A Touch of Zen is of a spider moving in on its cobweb-entangled prey.

“Rhythm is everything in cinema,” says director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
Making the unique choice for the Birdman soundtrack, Iñárritu went with an almost total drum score by four-time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez.
Sanchez is considered by many critics and musicians alike to be one of the most prominent drummers, bandleaders and composers of his generation.
Sanchez will open the 2014 Hollywood Music in Media Awards with a special drum performance from Birdman. Held at the Fonda Theater in Hollywood on Tuesday, November 4, Sanchez will play his critically acclaimed drum score live to a scene from the film.
Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career,...

On a windy night, a black-clad stranger rides into Daugherty City, Texas. He flips a coin to a scruffy drunk who is strapped for the price of a drink. He exposes a crooked dice game in the local saloon, where most of the townsfolk seem to be congregated. Then he departs. In the meantime, down the street, a gang of acrobatic robbers breaks into the bank and heists a safe containing $100,000 in Army payroll money. The getaway crew escapes town before a wounded trooper can raise the alarm, but out on the trail they run into the stranger, Sabata, who picks them off with a tricked-out rifle and recovers the stolen money.
Thus, in under 15 minutes of running time, Gianfranco Parolini neatly sets up the events that will drive the remaining 90 minutes of his 1969 Spaghetti Western, "Ehi amico... c'è Sabata,...

1. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis: The pair pull off a “heist” on the Billboard Hot 100 as they become the first duo in the chart’s history to land their first two singles at No. 1. 2. Mariah Carey: After a few less than “triumphant” starts, it looks like she has a hit on her hands with “#Beautiful” featuring Miguel. Do lambs like hashtags? 3. Paul McCartney: A telegram requesting his presence to play bass with Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and Tony Williams has surfaced. The recording never happened because of Hendrix’s death, but that’s way cooler than Sir Paul playing with...

London -- Miles and Jimi. Jimi and Miles. Fans of the late trumpet and guitar masters have long known that Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix had been making plans to record together in the year before Hendrix's sudden death in 1970.
But less attention has been paid to the bass player they were trying to recruit: Paul McCartney, who was busy with another band at the time.
This tantalizing detail about the super group that never was – jazz standout Tony Williams would have been on drums – is contained in an oft-overlooked telegram that Hendrix sent to McCartney at The Beatles' Apple Records in London on Oct. 21, 1969.
"We are recording and LP together this weekend in NewYork," it says, complete with typographical errors. "How about coming in to play bass stop call Alvan Douglas 212-5812212. Peace Jimi Hendrix Miles Davis Tony Williams."

Seventy-one disc box set gives new meaning to the word “comprehensive” At the end of 1967’s Miles Smiles, the second great album from Miles Davis’ second great quintet, the trumpeter’s gravelly voice emerges from “Gingerbread Boy” like Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey: “Teo, play that,” he hisses to producer/saxophonist Teo Macero in a slight singsong. “Teo, Teo, Teo, Teo—play that.” Macero had produced Davis’ earlier classics, including 1959’s Kind of Blue, but by the late ’60s the trumpet giant and his new quintet—saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams—were entering a whole new...

A new track entitled "When the Money Goes" from Jay-z has made its way out. Up to date, there hasn't any statement whether the single is recorded for his upcoming eleventh studio album "The Blueprint 3" or crafted for another project.
"I ain't asking you to do a life bid with me/ I don't want you to die for me, baby, live with me," Jay-z raps in the song. "I'm just saying when the going gets rough, don't forget all the shine at the time when I was showing up/ Show me the same love you showed me when I was blowing up/ You told me it was Roc for life, throw it up."
In working on "Blueprint 3", Jay-z reveals to MTV that he will take his time to make out-of-the-box music. "I wanna make it beyond and above. I'm gonna take my time with it. ... I think I need some restrictions.
