In the late ’70s and early ’80s, CHiPs was one of the hottest shows on television, and the show turned its stars, Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada, into instant celebrities, with their faces adorning T-shirts, posters, and schoolkids’ lunchboxes everywhere. Wilcox has great memories of the years he spent on the show. Speaking at a fan event, he talked about some of the things that made him proud to be on CHiPs. For six seasons, starting in 1977, CHiPs took a lighthearted look at law enforcement through the adventures of Ponch and Jon, a couple of California Highway Patrol motorcycle patrolmen who had a knack for finding themselves in the middle of the action — action that often included outrageous chases, crazy crashes, and big pile-ups. Larry Wilcox, who starred (and rode) alongside partner Erik Estrada, has a lot of great memories of making the show. Speaking at a fan event, he talked about how the most amazing part of the production was seeing the show’s old-school stuntmen at work. A lot of slashers in the early ‘80s leaned on a mystery component, so it would only seem natural that the small screen would adapt this method to attract the horror crowd; however, being unable to show anything by network standards leaves you with only the mystery of the killer to fall back on. Such is the case with Deadly Lessons (1983), a fun enough slasher without the slashing and a stacked cast.
Originally broadcast on March 7th as The ABC Monday Night Movie, Deadly Lessons was schooled by Alice/One Day at a Time on CBS and NBC rolled out their own movie competition; but ABC always had a knack for attracting strong casts and interesting horror based material. Deadly Lessons has the cast part nailed, and offers up an interesting enough thriller as long as you’re not expecting too many slasher tropes, small screen or not.

This is either going to be really good or so bad, it’s great. But either way, ABC’s relaunch of Battle of the Network Stars (premiering Thursday, June 29 at 9/8c) is looking like the summer’s must-see — especially since on Tuesday the full list of competitors was released. The celebrities we’re most psyched to see throwing down in events like the kayak relay race and dunk tank:

Dorothy Stratten had the world at her fingertips in 1980.
She had rocketed to fame as the Playboy Playmate of the Year. Now, Hollywood was calling. She landed guest roles on TV shows such as Buck Rodgers and Fantasy Island.
Things got even better for her when she earned a substantial role in the movie They All Laughed, a comedy film starring Audrey Hepburn, Ben Gazzara and John Ritter.
She maintained warm relationships with several Hollywood heavy hitters, including Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.
But Stratton’s personal life was messy. Her marriage to her controlling small-time manager, Paul Snider, was on the rocks.

One half of the CHiPs TV series’ iconic duo doesn’t show up in the big screen reboot – and now he’s revealing why.
Larry Wilcox – who portrayed California Highway Patrolman Jon Baker in the 1977-1983 show – does not make a cameo in the new film, although his former castmate, Erik Estrada – aka Frank “Ponch” Poncharello – does.
“It’s a complex issue, but basically, I wasn’t invited to my own party,” Wilcox told Vulture.

Borrowing character names and a few elements from the Larry Wilcox- and Erik Estrada-led television drama CHiPs, Dax Shepard’s remake feels more like a big-budget reboot of his delightful shit-kicking action comedy Hit and Run. His sophomore feature as a director delivers, fittingly, a few sophomoric laughs operating at the same frantic energy level as his previous film. Although its structure is similar to that of a loose Judd Apatow sensibility (which can be quite painful, as was the “extended cut” of the 40-Year-Old Virgin), CHiPs is a buddy comedy that’s more interested in homosocial bonding than the actual mission. The problem is the bonding, as sweet as it is, grows a little tiring and the film is structured so that we’re far ahead of our heroes, and where’s the fun in that?

Frank “Ponch” Poncherello, the undercover FBI agent tasked with investigating corruption in the California Highway Patrol as portrayed by Michael Peña in the new action-comedy Chips, is heterosexual. Normally, that isn’t something that would be deemed important enough to note in the opening paragraph of a review. But this movie, loosely based on the late ’70s-early ’80s NBC cop show starring Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada and blatantly emulating the 2012 movie adaptation of 21 Jump Street, seems to think it’s really, really important for audiences to know that Ponch is not a homosexual.
He’s so straight, in fact, that he gets defensive and angry when he’s greeted by a man in his underwear, even if they happen to be in a locker room at the time. As Ponch explains it, it’s not homophobic to have a phobia of another man’s body, as long ...

No one really asked for a “CHiPS” movie, right? As far as can be determined from the rowdy, laugh-challenged mess that is writer-director-star Dax Shepard’s badges-and-bikes action comedy, baked-in nostalgia for the cheesy ’70s-’80s slab of filler prime time is barely evident. After all, the presumed audience probably wasn’t born when Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada retired their helmets, shades and Kawasakis. Besides, the original TV show about California Highway Patrol studs was already its own light-entertainment parody of sorts, so apart from keeping the names Jon Baker and Ponch, you approach this “CHiPS” for what it is: one more.

Not 24 hours before I met up with Dax Shepard to discuss his CHiPs reboot (or as it's now called, Chips), Kristen Bell had done the same, interviewing her husband and their costar, Michael Peña, as a special correspondent for Entertainment Tonight. That's a tough act to follow, and even more so after hearing how she did from Shepard: "Much hotter than your average host, I gotta say," he deadpanned. "I don't actually know who she was replacing, so that's not directly comparing her to someone else. But any question that she asks goes down with a spoonful of sugar."
Despite the taste of my questions (salty?), Shepard happily discussed his wife and how she ended up playing a "sh*thead" in his movie, the perks of casting famous friends, and hard-r ratings -- it's the same Chips you love, now with more dick jokes!

Wizard World Comic Con visited Portland, Oregon last weekend and they provided me an opportunity to attend. The experience had it’s good points and it’s bad which I will get into.
Batman-Kevin Conroy
To start, it was much smaller an affair than I anticipated. I think back to Rose City Comic Con back in September, which utilized the entire Oregon Convention Center with the main hall and numerous meeting rooms for the various panels. Wizard World used the main hall as well as two sets of meeting rooms which made the event feel smaller. That’s not a bad thing in and of itself, just an observation.
The line to get into the convention hall was long. The biggest problem I had with it was that the Wizard World staff utilized only one set of doors for the entrance. Everyone had to be scanned with a...

Because one nostalgic, self-aware movie reboot of a classic television property isn’t enough for 2017, here’s the trailer for CHiPs. Dax Shepard wrote and directed this take on the ’70s show, and assumes on the role of Jon Baker, originated by Liz Lemon crush Larry Wilcox. Shepard constructed a modern, explosion-heavy spin on the buddy narrative—because what else are you supposed to do these days?—in which Michael Peña’s Frank Poncherello is actually an FBI agent working undercover to investigate crooked highway patrol officers. Really, however, Poncherello’s defining characteristic here seems to be a fear of coming into contact with Baker’s dick. Anyway, Shepard’s wife Kristen Bell is also on this ride, as are Maya Rudolph and Vincent D’Onofrio, the latter of whom we’re going to guess is playing a bad guy. CHiPs motors into theaters March 24.

Dax Shepard is committed to next year’s big-screen CHiPs reboot. As the writer, director, producer and star of Warner Bros.’ forthcoming cinematic revitalization, Shepard isn’t just filling in Larry Wilcox’s shoes as Officer Jon Baker in the upcoming movie. While the actor’s background suggests something slightly ironic and heavily comedic, possibly along the lines of 2004’s Starsky and Hutch or, more recently, 21/22 Jump Street and next year’s Baywatch, that’s actually not what Shepard has in store for us.
In a recent interview with EW, who debuted the photo above, Shepard talks about how he’s taken an approach similar to Bad Boys and Lethal Weapon. While the film’s not going to be entirely straight-faced, it’s also not going to be a tongue-in-cheek lark, either.

Kendall Jenner had a lot in common with the guy she planted her first kiss on ... their dads both starred in the '80s crime drama "CHiPS." Kendall copped to kissing elementary school crush Chad Wilcox during a game of truth or dare back in the 5th grade. Turns out Chad is the son of actor Larry Wilcox, who most famously played Officer Jon Baker. Caitlyn Jenner, then Bruce, famously replaced Larry's co-star Erik Estrada...

TV shows have found many different ways over the years to work around the pregnancy of their actresses. Sometimes, they do lots of episodes where their characters are always sitting behind a desk, or holding a giant purse, or (in a memorable "Cheers" episode when Shelley Long was pregnant) trapped in an air conditioning duct. "The X-Files" had Scully get abducted, while "Frasier" simply suggested that Daphne had just put on a lot of weight. "New Girl" is taking a multi-pronged approach for its next season. The first five episodes were filmed at the end of production for last season, and to allow the show to resume production while Zoey Deschanel is on maternity leave, Jess will be sequestered on jury duty for a few episodes. And on top of that, the loft will temporarily get a new roommate, played by... ... Megan Fox? Per the press release, "Fox will play 'Reagan,...

After playing a villain on “Daredevil,” Vincent D’Onofrio is in talks to play the bad guy in Warner Bros.’ “CHiPS,” an individual with knowledge of the negotiations told TheWrap Tuesday. The film is an adaptation of the classic 1970s cop show of the same name. The NBC series, which ran from 1977 to 1983, followed the adventures of two California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers. The big-screen version has already enlisted Dax Shepard and Michael Pena as beloved officers Jon Baker, played by Larry Wilcox, and Erik Estrada’s Frank Poncherello, respectively. Shepard is also directing and co-writing the screenplay after Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgove wrote.

Hot off his acclaimed turn as Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin in Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio has snagged yet another villainous role – this time in Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the classic TV series CHiPs.
Dax Shepard and Michael Pena will take on the lead roles of motorcycling buddy cops Jon Baker and Frank Poncherello, who come up against a big-time ring of exotic car thieves led by a ruthless former cop (D’Onofrio). Shepard is also directing the pic, having already written the script from previous drafts by Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgove.
D’Onofrio is enjoying a second career wind thanks to the widespread acclaim his portrayal of the Daredevil villain has received. He spent a decade starring on Law and Order: Criminal Intent before that, but now his star is rising with a key role in this summer’s Jurassic World as well as...

He’s played a bad guy or two in his time, and he’s recently been burning up the small screen as nuanced threat Wilson Fisk in the Marvel/Netflix Daredevil series. So you can see why Dax Shepard might have picked Vincent D'Onofrio to play the villain in the new CHiPs movie.Word broke last September that Shepard had locked in a deal with Warner Bros. to write, direct and co-star in the film adapted from Rick Rosner’s cult TV series that saw Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox as dedicated, khaki-clad cops Frank “Ponch” Poncherrello and Jon Baker, who kept the mean streets of California’s highways safe from crime between 1977 and 1983. With Shepard taking over the Baker role and Michael Pena filling Ponch’s groin-troubling shorts, not much else has been revealed about the film’s angle, which is written by Shepard based on an earlier script...

Special correspondent Sheryl Underwood interviews the cast of the beloved cop show.
It’s been more than 30 years since Ponch and Jon rode off into the sunset on the hit buddy cop show CHiPs. The cast sat down together for the first time with special correspondent Sheryl Underwood to talk on-set drama and what they've been up to since turning in their badges.
Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada played California Highway Patrol partners Jon Baker and "Ponch" Poncherello on the show and while rumors of cast conflicts persisted when they were filming, the two downplayed any feud.
"As far as I'm concerned, I always felt like, you know, we're different personalities," Wilcox told Underwood. "That's okay."
"Yeah, we French kissed and made up," Estrada joked.

Dax Shepard will write, direct and star in the CHiPS movie for Warner Bros., which will also star Michael Pena.
Dax Shepard's 'CHiPS' Movie
Shepard is turning the erstwhile CHiPS TV series into a movie in which he’ll play Officer Jon Baker opposite Michael Pena’s Frank “Ponch" Poncherello, reported Deadline. In the NBC TV series created by Rick Rosner that ran from 1977-1983, Larry Wilcox played Jon Baker and Erik Estrada played Ponch. The series followed the two khaki-clad officers as they patrolled California highways on motorcycles.
Shepard’s Primate Pictures is producing the film with Andrew Panay, while Rosner, who oversaw 139 episodes of the original series, will be onboard as an executive producer.
CHiPS will be following in the footsteps of other TV shows from that era that were eventually transferred to the big screen – including The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) and Starsky and Hutch...

Dax Shepard is set to develop a big screen adaptation of the classic motorcycle cop series CHiPS. He will write, star, and direct the movie, which will also co-star Michael Pena (End of Watch). Like the TV series, the movie will revolve around two California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers.
Shepard will play Jon Baker, the "by-the-book officer" played by Larry Wilcox in the TV show. Pena is set to play Frank Poncherello, Baker's "wild partner," who was played by Erik Estrada.
CHiPS was such a cool show to watch, and always managed to entertain. It ran on NBC from 1977 to 1983 with 139 episodes. Fans of the series might be happy to know that creator Rick Rosner will be an executive producer on the series.

For someone who grew up with a painting of CHiPs hanging in the entryway of his house (my step-dad did it for a “TV Guide” ad or something), I don’t remember much about the actual TV series. It had a pair of cops on motorcycles, made a star out of Erik Estrada and for a brief moment near the end of its six seasons featured former Olympian and future Kardashian father figure Bruce Jenner. I honestly have no memory of the tone of the show when it was on, but it does seem to have become more comical in retrospect (is it the tight pants?). Enough to be perfect fodder for one of those movies based on a TV show that’s closer to parody than faithful adaptation. When Wilmer Valderrama was reportedly in the running to play Ponch (the Estrada role), in a big-screen version, that made total sense. Especially...

Whatever boundaries once existed between the big and small screens have all but evaporated over the past decade. Now, filmmakers and actors flow freely between television and movies, free of the stigma that once vexed a young Clint Eastwood eager to put the “Rawhide” days behind him. Three reports surfaced online over the past week to further link the two mediums. First up, Deadline reports that the world must prepare itself for a “CHiPS” movie. Yes, the same late 70s/early 80s show that featured khaki-uniformed motorcycle cops and starred the winsome duo of Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox. Warner Bros. has tapped actor-turned-director Dax Shepard to helm the big-screen adaptation, as well as write and star in it, no doubt based on his previous feature, the disappointing—at least to us—2012 action comedy, “Hit And Run.” Fortunately—or unfortunately, depending on your point-of-view—the studio wants a film closer...

Warner Bros. have turned to Dax Shepard to write, direct and star in a big screen version of CHiPS, the popular TV series which ran from the late 70s/early 80s. Shepard is perhaps best know for starring in Parenthood. The original series focused on two motorcycle highway patrolmen in California.
Shepard is set to take on Larry Wilcox’s role as Officer Jon Baker. Michael Pena (who will be seen in Ant-Man next year) meanwhile will play Frank “Ponch” Poncherello, the role made famous by Erik Estrada.
There has been talk of turning CHiPS to the big screen for a number of years now, with one recent pitch (which would have seen That ’70s Show star Wilmer Valderrama play Ponch) failing to ever get off the ground. The action-comedy aired on NBC from 1977 to 1983, and centred around two motorcycle cops of the California Highway Patrol.

The Hollywood reboot machine shows no sign of slowing down, as Warner Bros has tapped Dax Shepard (Parenthood) to write, direct and star in a big screen version of decades-old TV show, CHiPs. The series, which ran from 1977 – 1983, was essentially a police procedural, centred around two California Highway Patrol Officers, and really won its audiences over with the charming performances of its leading men – Larry Wilcox as Jon Baker, and Erik Estrada as Frank “Ponch” Poncherello. Those roles are now set to be filled by the equally charming Michael Pena (End Of Watch) as Ponch, and Shepard as Baker.
At the time of its original broadcast, the sight of Wilcox and Estrada in their clingier-than-clingy uniforms, astride powerful motorcycles, became as iconic as Catherine Bach’s ‘Daisy Dukes’ from The Dukes Of Hazzard – but unlike that show, CHiPs had hitherto failed to achieve a big screen reboot. While Starsky And Hutch...

There have been many a big screen reboot of classic t.v. shows, Starsky and Hutch, The Dukes of Hazard, and the upcoming The Equalizer to name just three, and while some of them should have stayed on the small screen, that doesn't stop Hollywood from green lighting the next one. Which brings us nicely to CHiPS, which Deadline report to be slated to go ahead at Warner Bros. with Dax Shepard (Hit and Run) attached to write, direct, and star. Following the adventures of two California motor cycle cops, Shepard has signed onto the role of Officer Jon Baker, originally played by Larry Wilcox, and Michael Pena will step into the shoes of Erik Estrada's Frank 'Ponch' Poncherello. While most of these big screen reboots have been comedies slyly aware of their small screen roots, word is CHiPS will be a buddy cop movie in the vein of Lethal Weapon or Bad Boys.
