- In 1974, became the first and only Australian Prime Minister to formally recognise the annexation of the Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania - into the Soviet Union. This recognition was denounced by the Opposition, exiled members of the Baltic States, and contradicted the United States policy of non-recognition of Soviet rule.
