Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. So that's how David Lynch does an info dump. First, with a cheeky, knowing scene featuring the brothers Horne: "Jerry, what's going on?" asks Ben (Richard Beymer) after his cannabis-infused sibling (David Patrick Kelly) phones him from the woods. "I think I'm high!…I don't know where I am!" Jerry screams, perhaps speaking for a good subsection of the Twin Peaks revival audience, who have, over the six prior installments, been given only glimpses of a larger picture. Narrative momentum comes in asides; the more prevalent longueurs are reserved for atmosphere and mood, for full immersion in apparent stasis.Part 7 shakes things up, following the brotherly freak-out with several story reveals that come in quick succession. But there's a niggling sense throughout all the...

2017 is William Bell’s 60th year in the music industry. He’s 77 years old. Cream, the Byrds and Linda Ronstadt have recorded his songs. And this year, he’s up for his first Grammys.
Strangely, they’re in what could be considered opposing categories — American and traditional R&B — but it makes sense for Bell, who never quite fit into easy categories. Performer, songwriter, producer — Bell has done it all.
Born William Henry Yarborough in Memphis on July 16, 1939, Bell, like a lot of soul singers from his era, first started singing in church when he was just 8 years old. He...

The story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (aka HBCUs) began before the Civil War and influenced the course of our nation yet remains one of America’s most important untold stories. Until now.
Veteran documentarian Stanley Nelson’s latest work traces the century-and-a-half story of HBCUs in the documentary film “Tell Them We Are Rising” revealing the crucial role of HBCUs not only in the identity of black Americans but in the nation as a whole.
A haven for Black intellectuals, artists and revolutionaries — and path of promise toward the American dream — Black colleges and universities have educated the architects of freedom movements and cultivated leaders in every field.

"Abominations" was a Very Special Episode of Legends.
Unfortunately, I'm going to have a lot of people breathing down my neck, because I don't think DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 Episode 4 worked.
Individually, the plotlines were fine, but together they were hard to stomach. The line that really drove that home for me was from Stein, "I suppose there will always be those who will seek to dehumanize us, but I believe there are more that cling to hope, despite the darkness."
It wasn't until he mentioned dehumanization that I correlated slaves and zombies. Just...no. Maybe I was reading too much. Wouldn't be the first time!
So. Some dude from another planet crashed on earth, Mississippi, 1863. Silly me, I thought he was a metahuman. Nope, just a zombie, because those with the virus are often flying through the universe. Whatever.
Ray: You Ok?
Mick: We were attacked by zombies.

Chicago – There are previous examples of films that were made with a president as a character while he was in office, including “P.T. 109” (John F. Kennedy, war story), “W.” (George W. Bush, Oliver Stone biography) and “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (Franklin D. Roosevelt, cameo). President Barack Obama has joined their ranks, but the subject matter of “Southside With You” is decidedly different. The film chronicles his first date with Michelle Robinson, now the First Lady.
Conceived, written and directed by Richard Tanne, “Southside With You” is a charming day-in-the-life first date that pairs the young Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) – ex-Chicago community organizer and freshly minted Harvard Law School grad – with Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter). There are glimpses of Michelle’s home life, with her mother Marian (Vanessa Bell Calloway) and father Fraser (Phillip Edward Van Lear). Filmed on location in Chicago,...

This week in the world of wrestling, Seth Rollins wrestled four times in a week, which is three times more than Hhh and Stephanie McMahon have wrestled all year combined. This is despite them being booked far stronger than the champion. Elsewhere, Kane did his best Abyss impression by developing his own split-personality, and Natalya, the best WWE woman wrestler of the past few years, returned to her first match on a Raw in over five months. She lost in four minutes. Viva la revolucion?

WWE has made more changes to their commentary teams on both Raw and Smackdown following the end of Tough Enough. The new permanent team on Raw will be Michael Cole, John Bradshaw Layfield and Byron Saxton. The Smackdown team will be Rich Brennan, Jerry Lawler and Booker T.
One of the notable moves is Saxton replacing Booker full time on Raw. It’s an interesting choice because Booker was in the seat for most of the year and then he was a coach on Tough Enough for a few months. It was expected that Booker would get his spot back, but WWE decided to keep Saxton there full time. Saxton was on Smackdown before that, so Booker switched with him.
The announce team for pay-per-view events will likely remain Cole, Lawler and Jbl.

The fallout continues for Hulk Hogan (real name Terry Bollea) following the news that he was recorded making racist remarks several years ago. Shortly after WWE announced that they were terminating their contract with the former professional wrestler, his future on Tough Enough is also in shambles. In fact, a source tell E! The story of iconic soul label Stax Records is en route to stage and screen with Evergreen Media Holdings and Oscar-winning 20 Feet From Stardom director Morgan Neville. Neville will executive produce a feature adaptation of author Robert Gordon’s 2013 book Respect Yourself: Stax Records And The Soul Explosion, tracking the inception of the influential record label that created in 1960s Memphis by a white banker and a black radio DJ amid the civil rights movement.
Evergreen also has inked a separate deal with Rondor Music International, a Universal Music Group company, for rights to use the Stax music catalog that put out such soul classics as Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour,” the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There” and tracks from the likes of Booker T. and the MGs, Sam and Dave, Isaac Hayes and more.

Just last month, Concord Music Group announced that it was developing a Broadway musical about the iconic music label Stax Records, which launched the careers of such soul artists as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and Booker T. & the Mg's amid the racial tension of the civil rights era. Stuart Benjamin, the Academy Award nominated producer of Ray, is co-developing the musical, and the plan is to launch by spring of 2016. Is it possible though that the producers lined up the wrong rights to make this happen? That's what a lawsuit filed by Tony DeRosa-Grund's Evergreen Media

Current Njpw and former Tna tag team the Young Bucks have made a big splash outside of major American promotions, and continue to play on the emotions of their fans with their recent tweets.

Disney fans, this was a Saturday Night Live for you.
Going into the episode, it seemed likely there would be at least one musical sketch moment. After all, Anna Kendrick was a Tony nominee when she was just a teenager, starred in the cult classic Camp, and is perhaps best known as the lead in the a cappella comedy Pitch Perfect, which somehow spawned a huge radio hit for the actress with her cover of “Cups.” (Don’t worry. That was – cleverly – spoofed last night as well.)

It's a very special episode of "WWE Raw," as WWE turns back the clock to take things old school. That means a retro arena design, an old ring and several returning legends to delight the fans.
Scheduled to appear on the show are "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase, Bob Backlund, Roddy Piper, Ric Flair, The New Age Outlaws, IRS, Ron Simmons, Scotty 2 Hotty and Diamond Dallas Page. Of course, WWE always trots out quite a few surprises on these special episodes as well, so there's no telling what they have in store.
There's also the ongoing story lines, leading up to the "Royal Rumble." Daniel Bryan will debut as part of the Wyatt Family, Brock Lesnar is back, Cm Punk continues to make The Shield look like fools, and John Cena and Randy Orton return after missing last week's show.

Welcome to this week’s results and review write up of WWE Raw, the flagship show of the biggest sports entertainment company in the world.
So, tonight is a special “Slammy Awards” themed Raw, with awards being given out throughout the evening in a variety of categories, including “Superstar of the Year”, “Rookie of the Year”, “Diva of the Year” and “Match of the Year”. So let’s get going shall we?
The show begins, live from Washington, with local boy, and most-over guy in WWE, Daniel Bryan, making his way to the ring to a monster pop and thousands of “yes” chants from the fans in attendance. His opponent tonight is the dancing, silk shirt wearing, former Johnny Curtis, Fandango, who is accompanied by the lovely Summer Rae. The match isn’t a long one, but allows both men to get some offence in before the inevitable victory of Bryan.

Ranking right up there alongside places like Sun Studios, Graceland and Hitsville, USA, as some of the music world's holiest and most legendary places, is Muscle Shoals. It might not be as well known as those others, but the studio played an important, influential and crucial part in shaping the American soul and rock 'n roll musical landscape, and now the story is getting a much deserved, big screen telling. Directed by Greg Camalier, "Muscle Shoals" zeroes on two key factors that made the studio the hitmaking machine it became: Rick Hall and The Swampers. The former was a producer extraordinaire, while the latter was the studio backing band that equally stood tall next to more famous folks like The Funk Brothers, Booker T. & The M.G.s, The Wrecking Crew, and Mfsb, providing the sound and flavor that powered hits by Aretha Franklin, The Staple Singers, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett,...

"20 Feet From Stardom" is an exceptional music documentary that shines the spotlight on some wonderfully talented backup singers -- gifted musicians who were never fully able to make that short walk to the front of the stage to become successful solo artists. Drawn from over five decades of talented artists, along with interviews from superstars like Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, the work joins a pantheon of other exceptional music documentaries that do more than simply present a series of tunes, but focus on some of the most intense and important aspects of creative expression, of the vagaries of "success," and the challenges and luck involved that far supersede anything as fundamental as talent.

The close of this week’s Raw was an apt send-off into the oxymoronic PG-13 Extreme Rules, giving us something we don’t see every week, if ever: Triple H and Brock Lesnar engaging in fisticuffs. It almost didn’t happen; Lesnar was set to strut out of the arena until Hunter, inside of a steel cage, referred to him as “Brock Lesnar… the Bitch”. Up until that point, I was still admiring the fact that Lesnar shows up to collect a paycheque each week for simply standing there while Heyman speaks on his behalf. He’s truly living the American Dream.
Heyman divulged to Triple H that he and his client “enjoy the perverse pleasures in life”. I know, Heyman. I saw the pictures you posted to your Twitter account before this current WWE run, and they sure as hell weren’t PG-13. Heyman’s final taunt was to...

Mr Butter Fingers allowed the Urn [Anderson] to hit the floor just as soon as it arrived back in his hands. “I am not just any other man,” he said, juggling the trophy around his legs. “I am Cm Punk and there is nobody in the world that is better than me.” He professed that Taker could ably crush any other wrestler at Wrestlemania… except him. The crowd shared his convcition in spite of their booing. Punk has spent the better part of the last few years carrying the company’s flagship show on his back and although – narratively speaking – it doesn’t seem as if he’s capable of ending the Undertaker’s undefeated streak, he truly deserves to.

Pinpointing emergent, primetime-ready tunes for those shows is one challenge, but for her work on Scandal, another drama from Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes, Patsavas faced another one — breathing new life into old-school R&B classics. Below, Patsavas discusses how she takes a well-worn track like Kool & the Gang’s “Jungle Boogie” and gives it new meaning, plus her one major exception in Scandal’s soulful set list.

I met the documentary filmmaker Samein Priester last spring while I was at The MacDowell Colony. He screened his documentary short 1st &4Ever, which elicited an emotional response from all of us who saw it, and it launched my friendship with Priester. We talked about film and life and he showed me footage from other projects. There is a quality to Priester that is also evident in his work: you want to listen to him.

Thq’s WWE ’13 is due out in stores later this fall and after revealing new characters, downloadable content and a special Collector’s Edition packaging, we’ve finally been given the entire roster list for the massive game, which features current superstars, divas and superstars from the Attitude Era. It’s an impressive list of names that only makes the wait seem that much longer.
What’s particularly interesting about this list is the inclusion of various Attitude favorites that haven’t been in the WWE for some time. I’m of course talking about Billy Gunn, Road Dogg, X-Pac and Booker T. These superstars are without a doubt an important part of WWE history, but they’ve been mostly absent (aside from Booker T) from the WWE Universe ever since the rival company Tna formed. I’m happy to see WWE striking up deals with said superstars, because reliving...

Today in "Sandusky's Lawyers Are Grasping at Straws," we have news that all coaches shower with boys, not just Jerry Sandusky. All the cool coaches, anyway.

Former coaches Richard "Dick" Anderson and Booker T. Brooks (Awesome Name!) took the stand today to testify that it's totally normal and not at all weird or creepy to shower with boys, regardless of whether or not you know those boys. That's Football, You Guys. Granted, they wouldn't hug the kids or make rhythmic, skin-on-skin slapping sounds with them, but showering is completely cool. How can ye coach the youth if ye have not seen them in their pre-Fall state, naked and innocent? Defense lawyer Joe Amendola hopes their testimony will demonstrate to the jury the regularity with which Sandusky's actions occur in the coaching world.

As a member of Booker T. And The MGs, Donald "Duck" Dunn played with one of the best bands in rock, soul, and plain old human history. As the band's bassist, he was buried way down deep in a groove made famous by singers like Otis Redding, Sam And Dave, Wilson Pickett, and countless other greats of the '60s and '70s. Dunn was the one who made songs, and then millions of people, move. This perpetual forward motion was eloquent, undeniable, and sexy, but it was not inexhaustible. After playing two shows at the Blue Note Night Club in ...

The legendary bass player and songwriter, part of the sixties Memphis soul band Booker T. and the MGs, passed away early this morning in his sleep. Dunn was in Tokyo on tour with his longtime bandmate and high-school friend Steve Copper, who wrote on his Facebook wall that "the World has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live." Dunn's musical influence is hard to understate, having worked with the Blues Brothers, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and a host of others over the years. In 1992, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and five years ago received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with Booker T. Among their greatest hits: "Green Onions," which Dunn and Copper can be seen performing here in this video from a 2008 Memphis Tour of Australia.

Truth-Telling from Mississippi to Israel to China to Texas
Yes, truth is the essence of documentaries. But whose truth? What truth? In dangerous times, truth is elusive. When pain lingers, truth digs deeper into the obscure. Regardless, sometimes truth must come out. Sometimes there is no choice. Sometimes even fear is no match for truth — such as in Booker’s Place: A Mississippi Story.
In 1965, filmmaker Raymond DeFelitta traveled to Greenwood, Mississippi to shoot a documentary for NBC News on racial tensions in the South. DeFelitta initially planned to capture the conflict from the perspective of Southern whites, yet the highlight of his film turned out to be a brief monologue by an African American.
Booker T. Wright‘s presentation was candid and honest, even poetic, and strongly biting. In articulating the unpleasant truth about a Black American living in racist Mississippi, Booker became a human face for a system...

Memphis, Tenn. -- Tenor saxophonist Andrew Love, who formed the award-winning Memphis Horns duo with trumpeter Wayne Jackson and played unforgettable lines behind the royalty of soul, rock, pop and R&B, has died at age 70, his wife said Thursday.
Willie Love told The Associated Press on Friday that her husband died Thursday night surrounded by family and friends at his Memphis home. Love had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
Love is best known for his work with Jackson as The Memphis Horns. The two were awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in February, only the second instrumental backup group in history to receive the honor.
"He played with such feeling. He played with grace, soul," Willie Love said. "Andrew played notes from his heart."

There is much to discuss about last night's Grammy Awards, but before I start a lot of trash talk, I want to honor the music legend that was Whitney Houston.
I was out for dinner when I got a text with the news and spent the remainder of the night into the early hours trying to find a way to process it. Even typing this out now seems like it shouldn't be happening. Her talent was immeasurable and it is apparent in the words of her close friends that she was someone who brought light and love into many lives. Many of you probably have specific memories with certain songs. I don't have a specific memory but hearing just her name reminds me of almost two decades of change in my life and in hers.
I can't speculate as to what happened but I know that I feel guilty, just...

We already know President Obama likes to listen to (and occasionally sing) Al Green songs. And he's told us that his iPod has a bit of Jay-z and Lil Wayne on it. But with the toughest re-election campaign of his career on the horizon, what music will Obama 2012 be using to pump up crowds at rallies?
Judging by a playlist uploaded to Spotify this week, it looks like a cheerful, noncontroversial mix of classic rock, country, soul and R&B, but, alas, no hip-hop.
Instead, in a clear bid to appeal to the broad middle, Obama chose songs by beloved soul acts like Booker T. & the Mg's ("Green Onions"), Earth Wind & Fire ("Got to Get You Into My Life"), The Impressions ("Keep on Pushing") and, yes, Green (the pleading...

2 Days from TLC, Big Show faces Jack Swagger and Orton and Ryder face Barrett and Ziggler. But first, Josh Matthews introduces Booker T ahead of his return to the ring against Cody Rhodes. Cole shows footage of Rhodes attacking Booker last week. He asks Booker if hes ready. “Do I look ready?” The fans think he does. Booker says he didn’t want this, cause he was happy being on commentary. But still “To to hell with Michael Cole.” Booker says its about Cody trying to make a name for himself. And the Book will be damned if Cody gets legitimised off his name. Funny how he still uses the Five Time WCW Champion line, even though hes also a WWE Champion. I would have thought the WWE Nit pickers would have been all over that one. He adds that he’s going to win the Ic Title from Rhodes.

I know it’s hard to do, but admit it: those Booker T. & the Mg’s records are kinda corny. Yes, yes, they’re fun, they’re groovy, they’re funky, and they’re slathered with so much Memphis-style sauce, it wouldn’t be hard to mistake ‘em for a dish at Payne’s BBQ. But still, those Beatles covers, that Rascals cover, hell, even “Green Onions” . they’re all just kinda corny in a lighthearted, we-cracked-the-bottle-open-and-this-is-what-poured-out kinda way. This is an observation that nobody likes to make, mainly because it casts an aspersion on the World’s Best House Band, the guys that defined the Stax take...

If you've ever heard the needle dropped on a Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings 45, you know how expertly their music invokes the sounds of 60's and early 70's soul. And if you've ever seen them live, you know how effortlessly they can transport you there, like well-dressed deep soul time travelers. Director Philip Di Fiore captured this phenomenon in a three-part short film, which we have here for the first time in it's entirety, "Game Gets Old: the Trilogy."
Feast on that below and then read the chat I had with Sharon Jones over the phone while she was in Queens with her Mom -- we had to put our conversation on hold more than once while Jones took care of business and looked after her Mom's health. It's plain that she's still struggling after all these years but she and independent Brooklyn label, Daptone, have come very far sticking to their guns.
