Peter Pan, Wendy, and the Lost Boys are on a new adventure in the trailer for Disney’s “Peter Pan & Wendy.”
The first look at the upcoming film, which debuted at D23 Expo on Friday, opens with Ever Anderson as Wendy stumbling upon the Lost Boys — who are not all boys. When Wendy points out the discrepancy, she’s met with a sassy, “So?”
It isn’t long before Alexander Molony’s Peter Pan appears to whisk Wendy away. And, of course, it wouldn’t be “Peter Pan” unless the famous boy who wouldn’t grow up was being pursued by Captain Hook, played by Jude Law, who plays a pretty mean bad guy, guaranteed to make you at least a little uneasy. We also got a brief glimpse at Yara Shahidi, who plays a stunning Tinker Bell.

The film’s cast, including Ever Anderson as Wendy, Jude Law as Captain Hook and Alyssa Wapanatâhk as Tiger Lily, took the stage for the reveal.
“It’s been really amazing to be able to play Wendy,” Anderson said. “Wendy and Peter are equals in this film.”
“We got to mine their backstory a little more and try to know their past, when they were friends,” Law added. “It was nice to layer in that understanding of why Hook is so iconic.”
The D23 audience got to see the footage in person, which showcased the first looks at the classic characters in a grittier, more realistic take than we’ve seen before. Starring Alexander Molony and Ever as the titular characters,...

ReFrame, the coalition formed by Women in Film, the Sundance Institute and IMDbPro, has designated a total of 20 films among 2018’s 100 highest-grossing titles to receive the ReFrame Stamp, which recognize standout, gender-balanced films.
The list released Wednesday includes Fox Searchlight’s Oscar Best Picture-nominated The Favourite, Paramount’s Transformers pic Bumblebee, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, Stx’s I Feel Pretty and Lionsgate’s The Spy Who Dumped Me. Nine additional films outside the top 100 were awarded stamps after applying (see the full lists below).
The stamp, launched last June, awarded 12 film stamps in 2017. But the group’s 2018 study found continued disparities in female representation and women of color, with just 4% of the top 100 films directed by a female (down from 6% a year ago), and 23% written by a female. A total of 37% featured female leads, with only 9% being women of color.

A Wrinkle in Time is a film that demands a very pointed perspective, and while that may not be the kiss of death for what is clearly a family-oriented story, it needn’t have been the case. With that in mind, this is a film that divides its audience and renders itself enjoyable only for those who are young enough to be mesmerized by glittery landscapes and floating and/or flying creatures. Those young enough to find themselves enraptured by the general sense of wonder that simply is storytelling will likely find much to enjoy, but even still the overall effect is closer to that of an amusement park ride than something that truly has a story. Meg (Storm Reid) is likable enough and “everygirl” enough that audiences will quickly find themselves rooting for her, and the Mrs. trio are odd and magical enough to instill a sense of adventure in the target audience.

Much has been made of the budget allotted to the big screen adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel A Wrinkle in Time and how Director Ava DuVernay was a woman tackling something so massive. That’s a lot of press and pressure on a risky venture considering the novel may be beloved but not in the public consciousness. Thankfully, there have been other hits and misses to take attention away from the fact that this entertaining effectively flopped.
The movie, out today on Blu-ray from Walt Disney Home Entertainment, is a solid if flawed adaptation, that somehow missed the magical touch to enthrall younger viewers. Ava DuVernay‘s latest film “A Wrinkle in Time” entered the Oscar discussion in a unique way this week when Academy Awards host Jimmy Kimmel invited a bunch of celebs to crash a screening of the film next door to the Dolby Theatre. Three years ago DuVernay’s film “Selma” (2014) earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination but she was infamously snubbed, creating an outcry for more females and people of color to be recognized. Two years later her Netflix doc “13th” (2016) received a bid for Best Documentary Feature, so DuVernay officially became an Oscar-nominated filmmaker. Will Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” which will be released Friday, March 9, bring DuVernay back to the Oscars in 2019?

For some time, director Ava DuVernay and Disney have been hard at work at adapting the classic Madeleine L'Engle novel A Wrinkle in Time for the big screen. Yes, it’s an all too familiar tale that’s been adapted several times before, but make no mistake, this is undoubtedly the most high profile adaptation yet. As such, it has a budget to match it, and from what we can tell, it certainly shows quite a bit.
Between the bright colors, A-list talent, and vibrant imagery, DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time looks like it may be quite the crowd pleaser.

When you first heard that Pete’s Dragon was coming to theaters, you probably expected something that would become one of the biggest films of the year. Of course, the cynical among us probably expected something to ruin their childhood.
Either way, once Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford were attached, you had to take notice. But, in a year that was filled with bizarre disappointments, the movie didn’t take off the way it deserved.
Well, it’s headed home, and if you didn’t catch it in theaters, you really want to mark your calendars, because I know a lot of younger audiences didn’t get a chance to see this, and they’re going to love it. The release is pretty loaded with bonuses too, but in keeping with the current trend, they may not be things that younger viewers are especially interested in.

It seems very strange to me that it took until 2016 for me to meet David Lowery face to face. Not because I expect I should meet every single working filmmaker. That’s just silly. I’ve met a staggering number of writers, directors, actors, and people working at every other level in film and television over the years, but there are are plenty of people I’ve never run into, and I’m fine with that. With David, though, I have a history. You see, he used to be a spy for me. More accurately, he was a regular reviewer at Ain’t It Cool under the name “ghostboy,” and his beat was the festival circuit. I edited dozens and dozens of his pieces over the years, and I came to rely on him as a guy with a very strong sense of what he does or doesn’t like,...

Nine years before he completed production on the multi-million dollar Disney remake of “Pete’s Dragon,” David Lowery was living out of the back of his car, editing corporate videos. The Dallas native directed his first feature, the little-seen “Lullaby,” at age 19. The ensuing years found him collaborating with a close-knit group of local film-savvy friends, but little in the way of upward mobility. “I never put a premium on making a living,” he told me in a recent phone conversation. “It was never one of those things that was important to me.”
Lowery’s work at the time suggests as much — it’s anything but commercial — and yet it provided him with an ideal platform for a massive career move as one of Disney’s newest secret weapons. “Pete’s Dragon,” a $60 million re-imagining of the 1977 live-action-animated musical film, has all the hallmarks of Lowery’s earlier work: a serene,...

Watch the brand new trailer for Disney’s Pete’S Dragon, featuring spectacular never-before-seen footage of Pete’s dragon, Elliot.
See the film when it flies onto the big screen in 3D August 12.
A reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film, Pete’S Dragon is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who just so happens to be a dragon.
The movie stars Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World”), Oakes Fegley (“This is Where I Leave You”), Wes Bentley (“The Hunger Games”), Karl Urban (“Star Trek”), Oona Laurence (“Southpaw”), Isiah Whitlock, Jr. (“Cedar Rapids”) and Oscar® winner Robert Redford (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”). The film, which is directed by David Lowery (“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”), is written by Lowery & Toby Halbrooks based on a screenplay by Malcolm Marmorstein and produced by Jim Whitaker (“The Finest Hours,” “Friday Night Lights”), with Barrie M. Osborne (“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Great Gatsby”) serving as executive producer.
For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley).
Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott.
And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.
Disney’s Pete's Dragon opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016.

Disney's new take on Pete's Dragon lands in cinemas this August. Here's the trailer...
Disney is still counting up the cash it’s made on its live action telling of The Jungle Book (directed by Jon Favreau). And whilst its next live action take on an animated film isn’t expected to have quite the same impact at the box office, we’d imagine the studio is quietly confident about its new Pete’s Dragon.
The movie stars Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, West Bentley, Karl Urban and Oona Laurence. David Lowery is directing, having co-written the script with Toby Halbrooks.

While some may already feel burned-out by the summer movie season, there are more promising films to come. One of our most-anticipated features will arrive in mid-August. It’s David Lowery‘s follow-up to his sublime drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints: a reboot of Disney’s 1977 Pete’s Dragon. If you’ve never seen the original, it follows a orphan kid who brings his magical dragon to a new town. With a cast featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Karl Urban, and Wes Bentley, a new trailer has now arrived.
“We explored pink, just to see what would happen,” Lowery tells EW, commenting on his title character’s design. “From the get-go, the aesthetic was always to make everything feel as handmade as possible, including effects. To really have it feel like a blur between a very grounded realistic world and a world in which a big green dragon that can turn invisible can exist.” Check out the new trailer and poster below.

Making it three for three with Entertainment Weekly scoops – following hot on the heels of new images for both Jason Bourne and Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters – the outlet has unveiled a new still for David Lowery’s (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) live-action fairytale, Pete’s Dragon.
Yes, Pete’s reptilian ally may have been camera shy up until now, but today’s all-new shot showcases the beast – bearing the name Elliot – in all its furry glory. Emerging from a 40-year hibernation, Pete’s Dragon is a total reimagining of the Disney classic, introducing newcomer Oakes Fegley in the role of Pete, a lonesome 10-year-old that takes solace in the company of a rather unusual friend.
In breathing new life into the motion picture, the House of Mouse was conscious to retain much of the creature design glimpsed in the 1977 original. According to Lowery, there were “certain things about the...

Last week saw the debut of the first poster for Disney's upcoming Pete's Dragon remake, along with the promise of the trailer to come. Now it's arrived, and you can check it out right here to see your first look at the revamped classic.
If you're a fan of the original Pete's Dragon and eager to see what the remake will be like...well, you may have to keep waiting. The first teaser has arrived, but it does little to tell you about the movie or sell us on the need for its existence:
See what I mean? I may be coming down on it a bit harsh, but I was expecting a little bit more from it. If you know nothing of the original story, this trailer won't help new audiences out, and seems to actively avoid the whimsical nature of the movie which made it so fun to begin with.
