Nicolas Cage is ill-served by this very silly movie.

Do fish have dreams? Do they dream of ominous iguanas, perhaps? Or maybe the disembodied breakdancing souls of freshly capped gangsters? More to the point, will Nicolas Cage ever make another movie that makes sense? Judging by his new one, "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans," and considering his current financial straits, the prospects seem dim.
The director — the esteemed Werner Herzog, stupefyingly enough — claims never to have seen Abel Ferrara's original 1992 "Bad Lieutenant," and I think we can take him at his word. The Ferrara movie, which I'd recommend seeing before — or better yet instead of — this one, concerns a viciously bent New York City cop; and Harvey Keitel, in the title role, is the embodiment of rank, skeezy corruption. In Herzog's take on the story, »

The prospect of moving out of our parents’ houses and venturing out into life on our own is usually either an exhilarating relief or adventure we look forward to or, for some is perhaps the most frightening experience of their lives. For Herman Spooner, it ends up being both. Drake Doremus co-wrote and directed this charming indie dramedy about finding love when life feels like it can’t get any worse.
Matthew Lillard (Scream, THIR13EN Ghosts) plays the lovable loser Herman Spooner, but everyone just calls him “Spooner”. Herman, I mean… Spooner, lives at home. He’s about to turn the big 3-0 and his parents have put their collective foot(s) down and set a deadline. HermanSpooner is to move out on his own by the time he turns 30. For Spooner, who is less than stellar at his job as a used car salesman, working under the oppressive regime »

Splinter (2008) Synopsis: A young couple crosses paths with an on-the-run criminal and the three of them end up stuck inside a gas station, hunted by a voracious and ever changing parasitic creature. The three have to work together if they have any chance of surviving this night from hell. Killer Scene: I love this film from start to finish, but if I had to pick a single scene, it would revolve around the parasitic hand that infiltrates the gas station and sets about making their night even worse. A hand may not sound threatening, but this scene is awesome and conjures up fond memories of the demonic digits of Evil Dead II. KillSheet Violence: There is a fair amount of blood spilled here, with broken bones and cuts, an excellent arm amputation scene, and an infected raccoon going Captain Insane-o on a gas station attendant. Not overly violent (there are only like 6 characters in the whole film »

Nic Cage acting all hopped up on drugs and stuttering his way through a story about pirate treasure and a missing spoon while showing off his shack/childhood castle? Nic Cage does that in his sleep, buddy, and he does it here, in this clip from Werner Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”. The loony crime/drama co-stars Cage, Mendes, Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, Brad Dourif, Michael Shannon, Shawn Hatosy, Xzibit, Denzel Whitaker, Shea Whigham, Irma P. Hall, and probably won’t be entertaining you in a theater near you anytime soon. Unfortunately for Kilmer, this looks like it’ll hit a couple of theaters in limited release before going directly to DVD and cable; but then again, Kilmer is probably used to that. Via Apple. »

I watched a lot this week, but most of it was in theaters and not all at home. On Monday I saw The Road and Where the Wild Things Are (review); Tuesday was Astro Boy; Wednesday was Law Abiding Citizen (review); and Thursday was Good Hair (review) and my second time seeing An Education (review). On top of that I already mentioned how I watched the unrated version of Drag Me to Hell a second time on Blu-ray, which actually is quite bloodier than the PG-13 version that was in theaters, but I would say it detracts from the film's quality compared to the original. Beyond those flicks there are a few more, and as always a few quick words on each follows.
As always, remember you can keep tabs on my personal Netflix queue right here. I now have 50 friends on the movie rental site and would love to »

Yahoo have debuted the first trailer from Nicholas Cage’s new movie, ‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans’. The movie also stars Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, Vondie Curtis Hall, Shawn Hatosy, Denzel Whitaker, Xzibit, Shea Wigham, Katie Chonacas, Brad Dourif and is a remake of Abel Ferrara’s ‘Bad Lieutenant’ made in 1992 which starred Harvey Keitel.
The name makes it sound terrible although the images I posted previously and this new trailer actually make it look pretty good. The problems may come with the fact that it has Mr. Nicolas ‘hit and miss’ Cage in it and we could be in for a bumpy ride!
‘Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans’ has no UK release date as yet.

The new trailer for Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant : Port of Call New Orleans has been posted on Yahoo! Movies. The film, a remake of the Abel Ferrara classic Bad Lieutenant, stars Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Shawn Hatosy, Denzel Whitaker, Xzibit, Shea Whigham, Katie Chonacas and Brad Dourif.
In the film, Cage plays corrupt detective, Terence McDonagh, a man whose drive to score drugs is only matched by his dedication to the job. Determined to get his way, he wields his badge and gun at every turn, while investigating the killing of five Senegalese immigrants, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The highly functional addict uses his intuitive sleuth skill set to scour New Orleans for the next score and the murderers. Together with his love, a prostitute played by Eva Mendes, he descends into his own underworld, driven and tormented by desire, »

Below we have two new posters for Werner Herzog’s film “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” remake of sorts of Abel Ferrara’s infamous 1992 film, which originally starred Harvey Keitel.
Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs — while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (Eva Mendes). Together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manically humorous.
The film also stars Val Kilmer as the cop’s partner, »

Welcome to your Wednesday morning television briefing. The Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan is reporting that former Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles star Lena Headey has signed on to star in HBO's fantasy drama pilot Game of Thrones, based on the novel series by George R.R. Martin. Headey, who toplined the now-canceled Terminator, would play Cersei Lannister, described by Ryan as "a woman of royal blood who is every bit as smart, cunning and devious as the powerful men around her." She joins a cast for the pilot (directed by The Visitor's Tom McCarthy) that includes Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, Mark Addy, Jennifer Ehle, and a slew of others. Headey's character is the sister of Jamie Lannister (Coster-Waldau) and the wife of King Robert (Addy). Jonathan Liebesman's The Killing Room -- starring Nick Cannon, Timothy Hutton, Peter Stormare, Chloe Sevigny, Shea Whigham and Clea DuVall -- premiered at Sundance earlier this year but never made it to U.S. theaters. It'll be available for purchase on DVD on October 19 in the U.S., but you can already Netflix it or rent it at something called a "video store." In the film, four volunteers for what appears to be a paid research study get caught up in a classified government program. Quick! What number do Americans choose most frequently between 1 and 33? I would have said 12 because I always say 12 and I'm such a contrarian, but now 7 is making a lot of sense to me, too. Mind control. The official trailer is below. What do you think, and may we monitor those thoughts? And Choose A Number. »

Fango just heard from Jerry Chandler of Synapse Films, who gave us the scoop on a pair of new acquisitions that reflect his and Synapse partner Don May Jr.’s renewed commitment to independent genre features. “We stayed away from new indie films for a number of years, because they weren’t selling,” Chandler tells us, “but [their 2009 releases] Header and Sick Girl were too good for us to not put them out—when a title is as compelling as those two are, we have to handle them.
“That’s why Don and I got into this business, not just to throw stuff out there that isn’t as good, but might be an easier sell,” he continues. “Don and I debated about coming up with a name for a line of these titles, and for the life of us, we could not come up with anything that sounded right. However, we »

In June of last year we posted a piece on John Alan Simon's adaptation of Philip K Dick's Radio Free Albemuth wondering where it was. Since then, I've had a phone conversation with the director who told me the reason that it's taking so long is that they want to do it right, low budget and all. I know they've redone the cgi for the satellite multiple times and all in all, he says he'd rather take his time then put out crap. Well it's getting close folks, he tells me they are a month or two away from a finished product and we're quite excited. The film stars Alanis Morissette as Sylvia (which he tells me is perfect for her role), Ashley Greene as Rhonda, Jonathan Scarfe as Nicholas Brady, Shea Whigham as Phil, Katheryn Winnick as Rachel Brady, Hanna Hall as Vivian Kaplan, »

Werner Herzog's self-proclaimed-non-remake Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans starring Nicolas Cage has just received an online burst of coverage thanks to a promo reel that has just arrived online. The film is described as an updated version of 1992's The Bad Lieutenant, but Herzog has said he has never seen the original which received an Nc-17 rating with the depraved title character (Harvey Keitel) heavily involved in drugs, gambling, sex and stealing while a New York police officer. Well, whether Herzog never saw the original or not it appears he has tapped into that description to excess. Along with Cage the film features Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Shawn Hatosy, Xzibit, Shea Whigham, Brad Dourif and Denzel Whitaker and is expected to hit theaters at the end of this year. My assumption is the promo below was made for Cannes as sale »

Chicago – One of my favorite horror movies of the last several years, Toby Wilkins’ “Splinter,” will be the centerpiece of a signing event at Dark Delicacies in Burbank, Calif. on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 2 p.m. If you’re anywhere near the store, you should check it out. I would.
Splinter was released on Blu-Ray on April 14th, 2009.
Photo credit: Magnolia Director Toby Wilkins and stars Jill Wagner and Shea Wigham will appear at the event to sign copies of “Splinter” and Wilkins will also sign copies of “The Grudge 3,” which comes out on DVD on May 12th, 2009 from Sony.
A sample of my “Splinter” review:
“What does director Toby Wilkins do with “Splinter” that so many horror directors miss? He understands how to build tension and the power of the unseen. “Splinter” works because it places the focus on the well-rounded, believable characters instead of just their trap or their enemy. »

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – “Splinter” has been steadily building buzz since audiences first had a chance to see this twisted creature feature and now it’s destined to become a cult phenomenon on Blu-Ray and DVD. The film won six awards at Screamfest 2008 and earned praise from Variety, CBS-tv, Entertainment Weekly, and New York Magazine on its theatrical run. Horror fans are going to love this film for years to come.
Why? What does director Toby Wilkins do with “Splinter” that so many horror directors miss? He understand how to build tension and the power of the unseen. “Splinter” works because it places the focus on the well-rounded, believable characters instead of just their trap or their enemy. It’s a modern film take on what filmmakers have been doing for years and feels like a movie John Carpenter and Sam Raimi would love.
There are major echoes of both Carpenter »
