The body count keeps climbing on True Detective: Night Country — and this time, we know exactly who did it.
The season’s penultimate episode (which dropped early on Max on Friday, ahead of this Sunday’s HBO premiere) opens with Navarro still reeling from the death of her sister and Danvers grilling junkie recluse Otis Heiss for information on the ice caves. He shows her an entrance and will tell her how to get inside… if she’ll get him some heroin. Danvers turns him down flat, but when she and Navarro check out the entrance, they find it sealed off by a rockslide.

We’re halfway through the critically acclaimed True Detective: Night Country six-episode season, and even the arrival of episode three hasn’t made the killer’s identity any clearer. Episode three opens with a trip seven years in the past and a visit with the murder victim at the heart of the investigation.
Ennis Police Officer Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) shows up to arrest Annie Kowtok for trespassing and destruction of the mines and is met with screaming from inside the building. The building turns out to be a birthing center, and Navarro discovers that Annie is currently busy performing midwife duties. Instead of immediately arresting Annie, Navarro finds herself helping with the delivery. The new mom-to-be realizes the baby isn’t crying and becomes hysterical. Annie works to revive the baby, and suddenly,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “True Detective” Season 4, Episode 3, “Part 3” — the third hour of “Night Country.” Read our previous review here.]
“Be prepared,” the nurse says, as she brings Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Navarro (Kali Reis) in to see the last surviving member of the Tsalal research team. “He’s hard to look at.” And she’s right. Anders Lund (Þorsteinn Bachmann), the founder and director of the base, is a ghastly sight. His amputation stitches are still fresh. The one hand he has remaining is black and blue. Burn marks cover his face, which makes his frosted blue eyes all the more unsettling.
And if you thought the convulsions were difficult to witness, just wait until he’s completely still, sitting up, passing along messages from the great beyond.
It’s hard to say “True Detective” earns this scene as much as it needs it. Episode 3 sees the investigation hitting snag after snag: Their latest lead,...

The third chapter of Night Country begins and ends with women screaming. The late Annie K is there for both scenes — the first a flashback, the second a shaky cell phone video. Future Islands have returned with “The Fight,” the latest single from their forthcoming album, People Who Aren’t There Anymore.
Built around a down-tempo beat, “The Fight” is colored by an ethereal synth soundscape of hazy chords and glistening counter-melodies. Underneath, a deep, steady bass line holds down the bottom end, while overtop, the band’s Sam Herring delivers the kind of impassioned performance that only he can provide, singing fiery lines about self-preservation. “I won’t fade away,” the chorus goes. “I will face every day/ As if it’s my last one/ And I will keep you safe/ Just like our past was/ Fight for love every day.”
“The Fight” also arrives with an animated music video, matching the tonality of the song with abstract depictions of a dark-haired figure in red. Watch it below.

The AppleTV+ series The Changeling began by introducing us to the couple: Apollo and Emma. This was their story. But not the story they had dreamt about. Somewhere in the middle, both of them crossed over into a horrific fairy tale, both literally and figuratively. This world was associated with the name ‘Cal’. There were many references to it, and it seemed he or she was the mastermind behind brainwashing Emma and destroying Apollo’s dreams of being a good father. Who was this mysterious Cal? Before that question could be answered, William Wheeler came into Apollo’s life, and things started unfolding. Both of these characters belong to the New York City that ‘we never knew existed’. Oh, but it does, according to the show, and we have neglected it to our peril. Let’s take a look at these two characters that represent good and evil in a...

If you watched Friday’s season finale of The Changeling and still have questions about the dark, odd fairytale that’s entangled Apollo’s family, rest assured: You are not alone.
In the beginning of the episode, we’re told that in 1825, a group of Norwegians fled to the United States seeking religious freedom. But the journey was incredibly arduous, as heavy seas capsized the boat many times over. How did they make it alive? “They had help,” the narrator tells us.

The AppleTV+ series The Changeling is a weird concoction of family drama, mystery, thriller, and an absurd horror tale, borrowing elements from Greek and Norse mythology. There are many lenses through which one can look at each episode, but the best way to not lose track is to stick to the characters. The central theme of the story is parenthood, and Lakeith Stanfield plays Apollo Kagwa. Apollo married Emma Valentine, and they gave birth to Brian, named after Apollo’s father. The tale takes a gory turn when Emma does something unthinkable to Brian. Apollo, who had his own issues growing up, is a complex character that is portrayed sincerely by Stanfield. Let’s take a closer look at Apollo Kagwa.
Spoilers Ahead

While fully aware of Japan’s Ghost in the Shell and its impact as a Manga and Anime, I never experienced any version of it. As a result, I watched the recent live-action film version without preconceived notions. I knew all about the casting controversy but until there’s an actress of Japanese descent who can open a movie wide, casting decisions, such as this, will continue. So get over it.
Masamune Shirow created an interesting meditation on where humanity is going as he, like Ray Kurzweil, foresees the day when man and machine blend into a singular being. It won’t be overnight, nor will it be neat and easy. As a result, the question of what does it mean to be human permeates the film as written by Jamie Moss, William Wheeler, and Ehren Kruger and directed by Rupert Sanders.

One of the most audacious cons in history is aided by the certainty that no one would tell a lie so obvious.
A film about an outrageous hoax, based on a true story as told in a book written by the perpetrator of said hoax. With so many layers of reality between the actual events and their onscreen translation, should we assume everything in 2007’s The Hoax is accurate?
Perhaps the more important question is: does it matter?
My feeling is that a film’s first prerogative is to entertain. In any adaptation (whether from real life or another medium of fiction) concessions will be made to the necessity of visual drama. When real life is the model, I’m less concerned with accuracy so long as the film is never presented as evidence of the real events. (In other words, JFK is great drama. You can say it’s a great movie, but...

Rupert Sanders’ Ghost In The Shell live-actioner dawns with universal promise. Rainbow-colored building exteriors erect a neon-laced megacity (once again New Port City). Scarlett Johansson bursts through plate-glass and bullet-times the shit out of some mecha-Geishas. We haven’t yet endured a barrage of slaps to foreign culture and racial appropriation. Yes, Sanders lives in better times for the first few minutes of his synthetic-assassin tranquilizer – then it’s like an aesthetic “Abort” button is smashed. Dark nights negate any 3D usefulness, drowning skyscraper-tall advertisement holograms and eye-catching beautification. Life fleets, pacing tumbles and the whole thing begins to feel like a legless cyborg crawling out of futility.
Oh, and to those who cried whitewashing? Oh man. You guys are gonna be Sooooo pissed. Especially after all the marketing attempts to assure otherwise. Anywho…
Johansson transplants herself into the cybernetic shell of Major, a government operative whose human brain sits in an engineered super-body.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Trite characters, very well-worn clichés of Sf cinema, and a mystery that is completely transparent. All about production design, and even that is familiar. I’m “biast” (pro): big science fiction fan
I’m “biast” (con): not much of an anime fan
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
No, I have not read the manga by Masamune Shirow. I have not seen the 1995 animated film. (I’ve seen Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.) I have not seen the 2002 animated TV series. I have not seen the 2013 animated web series. I have not seen the 2015 animated film. (All of these originated in Japan, and fit solidly into the genre of anime, a particular subcategory of storytelling of which I am not much of a fan.)

There are two types of Scarlett Johansson roles that we’ve been getting over the past few years. One is affecting work in things like Her or Under the Skin, while the other is in action films, both of the Marvel ilk, as well as things like this week’s release Ghost in the Shell. I don’t mean this as an insult though. Johansson is possibly the best actress out there at transitioning between tugging at your emotions and entertaining you by kicking some ass. As such, this new release should continue raising her star wattage, paving the way for one of her future dramatic outings to finally get her that elusive Academy Award nomination. Ghost in the Shell is a science fiction / action film based on a very well regarded Japanese comic book. Set in the near future, it follows Major (Johansson), who is is the first of her kind.

Scarlett Johansson stars in the cyberpunk anime adaptation, Ghost In The Shell. Here's our review...
Think about some of the techno-thrillers that emerged in the mid-90s: Sandra Bullock vehicle The Net, say, or Michael Douglas-Demi Moore harassment-in-the-workplace Vr opus, Disclosure. Watch them now, and they look almost painfully quaint.
Now take a look at Ghost In The Shell, director Mamoru Oshii’s 1995 adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s manga; 22 years on, and it’s barely aged a day. It imagines a future where human and machine have long since fused; typists can have their hands replaced with ten-fingered robot limbs capable of banging out 1,000 words per second. Minds can be augmented for faster learning; eyes can be replaced with more powerful optical sensors. Yet in this future Tokyo, where humanity is on the cusp of leaving its body for a life in cyberspace, there’s a growing sense...

Ever since a western remake of Akira was tentatively announced more than a decade ago, Hollywood studios have been trying to crack the anime scene. On paper, many of the genre’s more prominent icons – namely Death Note, Alita: Battle Angel and Ghost in the Shell – lend themselves to a big-screen adaptation, what with their rich cyberpunk settings and built-in audience.
The first two properties are currently simmering in various stages of production, meaning it’s Rupert Sanders’ live-action Ghost in the Shell movie that has the honor (burden?) of instigating Hollywood’s new wave of mega-budget anime movies. Pegged for release on March 31st, Paramount has today rolled out yet another featurette that shifts the spotlight over to Section 9, an elite task force formed around The Major. Ghost in the Shell is now only three weeks away from its theatrical release, and the promos continue to pour online. The latest two – one featurette, one blink-and-you’ll-miss-it TV spot – are designed to shed some light on Scarlett Johansson’s ass-kicking Major as she sets off on a journey to discover the truth behind her missing identity.
Engineered to be the flagship product of Hanka Robotics, Johansson’s one-of-a-kind cyborg is deployed onto the streets of neo-Tokyo with one goal in mind: to stamp out any and all terrorism before it bubbles to the surface. Doing so will force The Major on a one-way collision course with Kuze, the chief antagonist of Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell movie.

With four films likely premiering (or already set for a release) this year, Jake Gyllenhaal has now found his next role. The Enemy star is set to join Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly for The Sisters Brothers, according to Variety. The latest film from Palme d’Or-winner Jacques Audiard (Dheepan, A Prophet, Rust and Bone), the neo-noir western is an adaptation of the novel by the same name from Patrick DeWitt, which centers on two brothers (Riley and Phoenix) who are hired to kill a man. This will be Audiard’s first full English-language film and as for Gyllenhaal, following last fall’s Nocturnal Animals, he’ll have Life, Stronger, Wildlife, and Okja all arriving this year.

After appearing in two huge blockbusters in the form of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and X-Men: Apocalypse, it looks like Oscar Isaac is hoping to get back to some smaller scale stuff. Sure, he does have Star Wars: The Last Jedi releasing at the end of the year, but he’s also lent his talents to Annihilation and Suburbicon recently. The former sees him reteam with his Ex Machina director Alex Garland, while the latter has him working under George Clooney.

Bob Cooper and Richard Saperstein’s Los Angeles-based production company has unveiled details of its Second World War double agent thriller.
Isaac will portray Juan Pujol Garcia, a man who without any special training managed to persuade the Germans and the British to hire him as a spy and won gallantry medals from both sides.
in reality his allegiance lay with MI5 and through a fake network of agents Garcia helped the British fool the Germans about the June 1944 Normandy landings, a critical juncture in the war.
William Wheeler wrote the screenplay and Cooper, Saperstein, Chuck Weinstock, Jason Spire, and Isaac will produce.
“Juan Pujol Garcia is unlike any character we’ve seen on film – he’s a chameleon and a master manipulator, deeply haunted by his past, with an unreadable agenda… and his actions have world-changing consequences,” said Cooper, who is attending Berlin for the screening of Maudie and will discuss the project with buyers.

Hollywood is rarely in search of the new, so each year brings a longer list of adapted screenplays and a shorter list of originals.
Sundance launched American indie-in-Paris Whit Stillman’s witty adaptation of an early epistolary Jane Austen novella, “Love & Friendship,” which boasted rave reviews for Kate Beckinsale as a bitchy gold-digging mom, and long legs at the arthouse box office ($14 million).
Veteran indie distributor James Schamus returned to his first love, screenwriting, for his well-reviewed directorial debut “Indignation,” adapting the Philip Roth novel about college love, which performed modestly at domestic arthouses ($3.3 million). Lesser-known “Indignation” fared better with Roth than rookie director-star Ewan McGregor and writer John Romano’s film version of the better-known novel “American Pastoral.”

Twenty-eight years ago, we discovered the world of street children within the harsh, raw, underbelly of Delhi. Yet, it was a life these children had chosen in preference to home and family – which had obviously become entirely intolerable.
There is so much missing from the lives of these children – food, security, health, education and love. All these, we urged ourselves that they needed and had a right to – a secure space to sleep, to play, and to dream. This realization paved the way for creation of Salaam Baalak Trust (Sbt). The Trust was established in December 1988, with the proceeds from the film Salaam Bombay – directed by Mira Nair.
Sbt has over the years successfully worked with over 73000 (till 2016) children restoring a significant portion back to their own families.

So, what studio is bringing sports fans and movie goers together? None other than the “house of mouse”, the Disney studios! Multiplexes have been bombarded by their releases this year, many from their “specialty subdivisions” like Disney/Pixar (Finding Dory) and Disney/Marvel (Captain America: Civil War) with a potential blockbuster from Disney/Lucasfilm (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) arriving in a couple of months. They’ve still got the Touchstone Pictures imprint for the more adult-subject films, while the Walt Disney Studios imprint has mainly been used for their non-Emoryville-made animated features like Frozen and this year’s Zootopia, Jungle Book, and Pete’S Dragon. But over the last decade or so, after snapping up the Espn basic cable TV channel, they’ve been releasing several true-life sports stories squarely aimed at family audiences, usually rated PG. Two years ago it was the baseball saga Million Dollar Arm,...

We all know what a heartwarming Disney sports drama feels like. Glossy, sentimental, going for rousing win moments. When Ugandan-Belizean Disney executive VP production Tendo Nagenda read Tim Crothers’ 2013 Espn magazine feature about Phiona Mutesi, a chess master who rose up from selling corn in the Kampala, Uganda slum of Katwe, he knew he’d found the right story. But he knew that if it was going to resonate, this couldn’t be soft-focus or glib. He had to find a director with the sensibility to keep it real.
For that, he approached veteran New York filmmaker Mira Nair, who has also lived in the Ugandan capital of Kampala for 27 years. He invited himself to tea, and she jumped on board.
They developed “Queen of Katwe” (September 23) with writer William Wheeler. Nair finally met Mutesi when she was in New York to play against Kasperov, she told me in our interview.

There’s nothing surprising or adventurous about Mira Nair’s “Queen of Katwe,” a sincere and sensitive dramatization of a 10-year-old Ugandan girl who became a world-renowned chess champion. Despite some of the harsher elements of the impoverished backdrop where Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga) grows up, Nair has made exactly the kind of feel-good tale of triumphant spirit entailed by the material. As Mutesi, Nalwanga delivers a serious, credible performance in which her intelligence outweighs the limited resources of her immediate surroundings; she’s complimented by a jubilant David Oyelowo as passionate coach Robert Katende and a ferocious Lupia Nyong’o as Phiona’s conflicted mother Nakku Harriet. Their perseverance unites the underprivileged community and sets the stage for a celebratory finale.
So why does “Queen of Katwe,” written by William Wheeler from journalist Tim Crothers’ book, feel so unsatisfying? The Disney-produced story simply lacks any genuine sense of urgency.

Relative newcomer Madina Nalwanga stands tall as the Queen of Katwe in today’s new featurette for Mira Nair’s awards-friendly drama.
The film chronicles the remarkable story of Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga) who, at only tens years of age, displayed a knack for the age-old game, drawing support from her family and rural community. It’s a support that pushes Mutesi on to the world stage, capturing the imagination of chess aficionados across the globe, before eventually going on to become a Woman Candidate Master in light of her eye-catching performances at the World Chess Olympiads.
It’s a remarkable tale, and it is little wonder why Phiona Mutesi’s meteoric rise hasn’t been adapted to the big screen before. Nonetheless, Mira Nair is calling the shots from behind the lens, building on a streak that comprises both Monsoon Wedding and Reluctant Fundamentalist. Speaking of which,...
