The "Mission: Impossible" franchise is a revolving door. Countless characters appear in one movie and then vanish without a trace, let alone a name-drop, from the next one. The only anchors from the beginning to the present are Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell.
These hi-and-byes happened behind the camera too. From the first 1996 "Mission: Impossible" up to 2015's "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," each film had a different director. This was what kept the franchise fresh even though the scripts were formulaic (Ethan's framed for treason by the real mole in every other movie). Each director had a different style and so told the story in a different way.
Brian De Palma's original "Mission: Impossible" had the most low-key set pieces but still had his usual boiling suspense; take the scene where Ethan is accused of being a mole by his handler Kittridge...

It’s tempting to say only Jake Gyllenhaal could play the tricky leading role of a disgraced police officer in Antoine Fuqua’s jittery “The Guilty,” but that would be silly, because icy star Jakob Cedergren did play this role — in Gustav Moller’s 2018 original. But Cedergren never went quite so crazy, got so explosive, so positively unhinged. Star-producer Gyllenhaal, who bought the rights to Moller’s film almost right out the gate, makes the film his own.
For the most part, it works. The same can be said about the film as a whole, which has gotten If you’ve seen Moller’s “The Guilty,” well, you’ve basically seen Fuqua’s, but Gyllenhaal’s performance adds a go-for-broke turn that capitalizes on the actor’s deep emotional reserves. The 23rd annual Art Directors Guild Awards took place on Saturday (Feb. 2). These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the winner of the Best Production Design race at the Academy Awards. Over the first 22 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar champ has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various genre categories. Fifteen of the Academy Award winners first prevailed with the guild, including the last five in a row.
The current Oscar frontrunner for this award, “The Favourite,” won at the Adg in the period category over, among others, two of its Oscar rivals: “First Man” and “Roma.” That race was rounded out by “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” One of the other two Academy Awards contenders — “Black Panther” — won the Adg fantasy film prize. The fifth Oscar nominee, “Mary Poppins Returns,” contended in that race. The contemporary award went to “Crazy Rich Asians.

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Just below are the 2015 Art Directors Guild nominations and as much as it may seem like Nightcrawler and American Sniper are currently bathing in nominations from all corners, what other contemporary films were going to get nominationsc The period category, however, does consist of a few alternatives that weren't nominated such as Mr. Turner and Fury and I can't help but wonder what the guild would have done in attempting to categorize Noah... Is it a period film or a fantasy filmc I'll leave that one alone... Perhaps one of the more surprisingly absent nominees is Maleficent. You could say there were too many special effects, but then again, isn't that what today's fantasy films primarily arec That said, just below are the nominations for contemporary, period and fantasy films and you can find my current Production Design predictions right here. I see this one as The Grand Budapest Hotel's to lose,...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

Film Sketchr chatted with conceptual illustrator James Carson, who has previously worked on Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor. This time the focus was on his latest project, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. James was tasked with the responsibility of helping to design key sets seen in the film like, the Triskelion (primary headquarters for S.H.I.E.L.D.), Steve Rogers apartment and Nick Fury's operating room. For the full interview click here. Film Sketchr: The Triskelion has been a feature of the Ultimates comic books since 2002. Was there anything that you took from the source? James Carson: We used the comic references sparingly. It seemed like many of the comic book images were more of a futuristic type design. Production Designer Peter Wenham felt early on that the Triskelion should be grounded in modern day sensibilities, and also representational of what S.H.E.

Four talented magicians mesmerize an international audience with a series of bold and original heists, all the while pursuing a hidden agenda that has the FBI and Interpol scrambling to anticipate their next move in Now You See Me, a visually spectacular blend of astonishing illusions and exhilarating action from director Louis Leterrier (Clash of the Titans).
The Four Horsemen, a magic super‐group led by the charismatic J.Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of hightech, high‐profile magic shows, first amazing audiences by remotely robbing a Paris bank while in Las Vegas, and then exposing a white‐collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts, baffling the authorities with their intricately planned capers.
FBI Special Agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes—and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist.

Fans who are eagerly anticipating Marvel's Cinematic Phase 2 (which kicks off with Iron Man 3 next month), will be happy to hear the announcement that production has officially started on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. To go along with that, Marvel has released the first official image and synopsis for the film, which gives some hints about where the film will go. Apparently, Black Widow has more of a leading role this time around...
Outside of the first Iron Man film, of all Marvel's lead-up movies, I think Captain America was one of the better ones. It wasn't perfect, fell into something of a cookie-cutter plot at times, but it was one of the more enjoyable and entertaining comic book movies. So I'm interested to see what comes next, and how they'll move the Captain into the mordern day following the events of Avengers.

Marvel has released the first official photo from Captain America: The Winter Soldier and announced that the movie has started shooting in Los Angeles! Thy've also released a little plot summary for the film that goes like this...
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will pick-up where Marvel’s The Avengers left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.
I'm very excited to see that Black Widow is going to play a big role in this story, and not just have a small cameo. This sequel is going to be great. I'm looking forward to seeing how everything turns out!
The movie is set to be released on April 4th, 2014. You can check out the full press release below!

The first official image for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has arrived along with an extensive synopsis, both courtesy of Marvel. The image itself is quite striking and expertly sums up Cap's internal conflict as he fully steps into the modern world. How will he reconcile the shield behind him and the S.H.I.E.L.D. in front of him?
I have to say, this is a great teaser image for the sequel to "Captain America: The First Avenger." If there was one thing fans wanted more of from "Marvel's the Avengers," it was time-displaced Steve coping with the new world around him. This one image pretty much says, "hey, we're dealing with it now." And that's great.
Check out the full synopsis, and a rundown of its major reveals, below.

This review was written for the theatrical release of "The Bourne Ultimatum"."The Bourne Ultimatum", the culminating film of the trilogy begun five years ago with "The Bourne Identity", gets under way with a burst of nervous energy and extreme urgency and never lets up. It's a 114-minute chase film, dashing through streets and rooftops of any number of international urban sprawls with Matt Damon's redoubtable Jason Bourne hot on the trail of -- himself. That might be the genius of the series: A James Bond-like character who can escape any pickle and thwart any villain, but all in a quest for his own identity. Jason is not out to save the world -- though he might do that -- he'd just like to know his real name.
Director Paul Greengrass, who only made the astonishing "United 93" in the interim, returns for his second "Bourne" film (after 2004's "The Bourne Supremacy") to bring the roller coaster ride to an end in a dead heat where all the plot points and (surviving) characters of the three films converge. Audiences will eat it up: This is a postmillennial spy-action movie pitched to a large international audience. You hardly need subtitles.
Article Templatehttp://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1119669402http://www.brightcove.com/channel.jsp?channel=769341148 var config = new Array();config["videoId"] = 1135484455;config["lineupId"] = null;config["videoRef"] = null;config["playerTag"] = null;config["autoStart"] = false;config["preloadBackColor"] = "#FFFFFF";config["width"] = 286; config["height"] = 277; config["playerId"] = 1119669402; createExperience(config, 8); The cool thing about this movie is that the real revenge is not against bad guys in the CIA, but against the high-tech world that maddens mere mortals. Your mobile phone drops calls? Your car needs towing after a parking-lot fender-bender? Well, Jason can switch phones and patch into the world from trains, subways, stairwells and undergrounds. Any car he steals leaps up sharp inclines, plunges off of roofs or smashes into other vehicles until reduced to smoldering metal yet can still outrace any car on the block.
And his body! Blow it up with a bomb, expose it to brutal hand-to-hand combat or throw it into the East River, and it gets up with a few manly scratches.Yes, there are a few plot holes. But few are likely to care. A smart cast of veteran actors gives the film just enough emotional heft to carry you through the silliness. Damon has definitely made Bourne his own. For all his physical dexterity and killing instincts, Damon brings a Hamlet-like quality to the CIA-trained assassin suffering from a five-year spell of amnesia who can never quite tell who his friends are, or rather, which of his enemies might be a true friend.
Joan Allen returns as the CIA investigator who has slowly come to see that Jason might be the real deal. And Julia Stiles as an in-over-her-head agent again shows up for no credible reason other than the producers want her back. (They're right.)
Newcomers include a flinty and increasingly antsy David Strathairn as a head of a black-ops program that has its real-life model in all the extralegal programs sponsored by the current administration. At one point, he declares "you can't make this stuff up," and you know the filmmakers are nodding toward today's Washington.
Scott Glenn appears as a law-ignoring CIA director, though he might remind you more of the current attorney general, and Albert Finney crops up toward at the end as a Dr. Mengele figure behind a behavior-mod program that created any number of Jason Bournes.
The movie swings through Moscow (filched from the previous film); Paris; Turin, Italy; London; Madrid; Tangiers, Morocco; and New York as Jason Hones in on who did this to him. (That's another thing -- he never has to endure airport security checks!)
A fatigue factor sets in somewhere; it might vary from person to person. Yet the sharp intelligence behind the screenplay by Tony Gilroy, Scott Z. Burns and George Nolfi (though other hands reportedly contributed) gives the plot, salvaged from the Robert Ludlum Cold War spy novel, a genuine buoyancy. The film is trying to get at something, no matter how crudely, about corruption within the American espionage system, with its secret reliance on renditions and torture in the name of freedom. This might not be the best way to illustrate the problem with credibility-stretchers at every turn. But then again, how many people look at documentaries?
Greengrass tops himself with each passing minute by staging terrific stunts and chases through crowded streets, buildings and rooftops. Cinematographer Oliver Wood and editor Christopher Rouse gives the film its lightning speed and jagged edges with a close, hand-held camera and quick edits while John Powell's score pulsates pure adrenaline.

The Bourne Ultimatum, the culminating film of the trilogy begun five years ago with The Bourne Identity, gets under way with a burst of nervous energy and extreme urgency and never lets up.
Director Paul Greengrass, who only made the astonishing United 93 in the interim, returns for his second Bourne film (after 2004's The Bourne Supremacy) to bring the roller coaster ride to an end in a dead heat where all the plot points and (surviving) characters of the three films converge.
