The children of Steve Marriott, along with his bandmates and fellow rock legends, are fighting against the potential release of recordings featuring new AI-generated versions of the late singer’s vocals.
According to Variety, the recordings were authorized by Marriott’s third wife, Toni Marriott, to whom the rock icon was married to for only two years before he tragically died in a fire at age 44 in 1991.
Steve’s daughter Mollie, on behalf of her siblings, has issued a statement decrying the potential release of these AI-generated recordings. Her stance has been endorsed by Small Faces’ Kenney Jones and Humble Pie’s Peter Frampton and Jerry Shirley, along with such legends as Robert Plant, David Gilmour, Bryan Adams, Paul Weller, Paul Rodgers, and others.
The statement reads as follows:
“The Marriott Estate is due to release an AI solo album of old and new songs of my father, Steve. Sadly,...

Jack O’Connell may be about to be seen on screen in the Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black,” but the actor has also stepped behind the camera to shoot a video for another U.K. music icon, Paul Weller.
The Brit — who stars as Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s feature alongside Marisa Abela as the late, legendary singer — has made his directorial debut with the music video for “Nothing,” a track set to be part of Weller’s new album “66,” releasing in May.
“It was a good stroke of fortune,” O’Connell tells Variety. “Paul’s been a mate for a while and he’s got a bunch of new music coming out. He asked me to be in [a video] and I said, ‘Can I direct it instead?’ He obliged. And now we’ve edited it and cut it together.”

The sort of platitudes that often accompany many retrospectives on classic albums, describing heroic narratives in which scenes are burst onto and names are cemented in history books, don’t necessarily fit the Smiths’s 1984 debut very well. Prior to the release of The Smiths, the band had already been voted Best New Act by NME readers. The band’s early singles received radio play from tastemakers like John Peel, and their live sessions for BBC proved so popular that they were rebroadcasted several times.

As we welcome in the New Year, we can reveal our annual (non-exhaustive) list of U.S. and international movies we think could grace the festival circuit in 2024. We’ve stuck to our criteria that the project must already be in production and have not already been announced for a festival. More than 70% of our selections last year went on to debut at a major festival. Those that didn’t were largely delayed by the strike or are still in post-production. If the titles below make the cut, it will be a thrilling year on the festival circuit once again.

Focusing on the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer, leukaemia, Hodgkin’s and related diseases.
Tct’s top priority is building units in NHS hospitals specifically for teenagers with cancer. As well as superior medical facilities, these units are equipped with day rooms, kitchens and chill-out rooms where teenagers can relax and feel at home or have friends and family to visit in a comfortable environment. There are computers with internet access, pool tables, playstations, satellite TV, musical instruments, and other things teenagers might like to occupy their time with, or share with friends. Most importantly, the units provide an environment where teenagers can meet others in a similar situation and allow patients to build friendships and mechanisms to cope with their disease.

The landmark 1985 charity concert, Live Aid, has been turned into a stage musical. Titled Just for One Day, the show will feature songs by Queen, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and more, and is set to premiere next year at the Old Vic in London.
In a new interview, the original Live Aid’s organizer, Bob Geldof, explained that the show is “based on actual testimony from the day,” and will give a stage to “real people telling their story.” To that end, it won’t be your run-of-the-mill jukebox romp, but rather, a fresh narrative meant to inspire a new generation of rock music lovers.
Among the other artists whose songs are included are: David Bowie, The Who, U2, The Police, The Pretenders, The Cars, Status Quo, Paul Weller, Sade, The Boomtown Rats, Bryan Adams, Diana Ross, and Ultravox.
“This isn’t a tribute thing,” Geldof told the BBC.

Live Aid was a concert like no other, organized by Geldof and fellow rock ‘n’ roller Midge Ure in July 1985 to raise funds and awareness for the famine crisis then taking place in Ethiopia.

Only the most contrarian music fans would maintain that Paul McCartney didn’t significantly impact pop music. His songs — with The Beatles, Wings, and solo under his own name — remain some of the biggest hits ever. A fellow musician called Paul and John Lennon idiots in the early 1960s. The pair obviously proved him wrong. Decades later, a solo Paul song made Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour reach out to Macca and tell him how much he liked it.

Their celebrity fans include Harry Styles, Dave Grohl, Haim and Jeff Lynne of Elo, who put it very simply when he said, “I love The Zombies.” Their 1968 album Odessey and Oracle is a psychedelic pop masterpiece, one of the most enduring records of the decade, yet by the time it was released, the band had already broken up, tired of being exploited by rogue promoters, and out of favour with Sixties pop pickers. When one of the singles from that album, “Time of the Season”, hit number three in the US Billboard charts in early 1969, the group’s singer Colin Blunstone, possessor of one of the most beautiful voices in rock’n’roll, had taken a job in an insurance company. “The first couple of days, there was a bit of pointing,” he recalls in the new Zombies documentary Hung Up on a Dream, “but that first day, I had...

There was one moment, Alex Moore confesses, when he felt like Emperor of Wigan. Due to play a local show at a roller-skating rink a few days ago, this unassuming singer – frontman of breakout indie rockers The Lathums, the town’s biggest local heroes since The Verve – decided, naively perhaps, to walk the only road down to the gig. Right into the arms of an adoring mob.
“Everybody that was going to the gig was on that road,” the 23-year-old grins coyly, leaning into the wreckage of bongs and crisp packets littering the kitchen table in the band’s HQ. “Got noticed immediately, literally a couple of steps, [everyone was] taking pictures and that. And then they all just lifted me up. Honestly, hundreds of people lifted me up and carried me to the venue. I didn’t take a single step. They were carrying me going: ‘Alex! Alex!’”

I was in ’ere last night!” says a hungover Richard Hawley as I greet him in his favourite Sheffield pub: Fagan’s. It’s a cold January afternoon and the musician is standing at the bar, chatting to the owners of 40 years, his friends Barbara and Tom. It’s a classic old folk club, with wooden-panelled walls dotted with picture frames and Guinness memorabilia. Despite his claim of being worse for wear, the 56-year-old is looking dapper, the rock and roll bridge between Elvis and Alex Turner. He’s wearing a tartan bomber jacket, handmade by a friend in the US. His dark hair is slicked back. He’s grateful to still have this asset; “I’m quite relieved,” he laughs, “most of the lads I went to school with look like footballs with eyes!” Hawley quit hard liquor a few years ago, but that doesn’t mean he can...

He continued: “I knew there would be a little bit about it obviously, but not that much. It was kind of nuts. In Scotland, I was on the cover of all these newspapers today.”
Cumming returned the honour to mark his 58th birthday, explaining his reasons for doing so in his Instagram post sharing the news.

The festive 1984 hit “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” can usually be found on every yuletide playlist in December, despite its almost blindingly depressing lyrics.
Nearly everyone knows the story behind the song. Band Aid, an amalgamation of the biggest stars of the 1980s, was formed by Sir Bob Geldof and Ultravox frontman Midge Ure, who gathered everyone together to record the song in London to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia.
To this day, the song has raised £200m, which is well above the initial £70,000 target set by Geldof. It was so successful, in fact, that Geldof has returned to the studio several times over the following 38 years. In total, there are four versions of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”.
With the combination of lyrics by Geldof and Ure and the voices of arguably the best singers of a generation, the 1984 song was a hit. The video...

With the director currently in post-production on Challengers, this is expected to be his next film.

A multi-million dollar defamation lawsuit filed against US musician Phoebe Bridgers has been dropped.
The case was originally filed by producer Chris Nelson back in September 2021. Nelson sued the “Kyoto” singer for 3.8m (£3.2m), claiming she spread false accusations about him.
At the time he alleged defamation, false light, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and intentional interference with prospective economic relations.
In the original suit, it stated that that Bridgers had “consensual sexual encounters” with Nelson and his then girlfriend, Emily Bannon “around 2018”, which continued until Bannon and Nelson broke up in 2019.
Following his split with Bannon, Nelson claims that Bridgers “maliciously and intentionally posted the false and defamatory statements about [him] as part of a vendetta to destroy [his] reputation that was inflamed by defendant Bridgers and his [ex-girlfriend, Bannon’s] sexual relationship”.
The defamation relates to an Instagram post from October 2020, where Nelson claims Bridgers made “false and misleading statements” on her account,...

Paul Weller has hit out at The Cure frontman Robert Smith in a recent interview, calling him a “fat c***” and suggesting he would “slap him”.
Weller’s comments were made when an interviewer suggested that a song from Noel Gallagher’s forthcoming album sounds like “A Forest” by The Cure.
This then seemingly propelled Weller into a state of what the writer described as “revulsion”.
"Really??!“ Weller replied in the cover story interview with Record Collector.
"I can’t f***ing stand them. F***ing fat c***, with his lipstick and all that b*llocks. He is my age as well, isn’t he?" Weller said.
"He’s a f***ing kn*b end," he continued. "I don’t like him. There you go. There’s someone I would work with. I’d f***ing slap him, or something."
The Independent has contacted representatives of Weller and Smith for comment.

The John Lewis Christmas Advert 2022 song will be a cover of the classic Blink 182 song “All The Small Things”.
The cover is by an artist called Michael Geier under the pseudonym: Puddles Pity Party.
The song was originally covered by Geier back in 2017, making the track the first in several years to have not been commissioned by John Lewis.
Geier is an actor, musician and entertainer from Georgia in the US. He is best known under the Puddles Pity Party alter ego, where he performs cover songs as a sad clown.
Puddles first gained attention when a video of him performing a cover of “Royals” by Lorde went viral, with 32 million views to date.
The sad clown also made it to the quarter-finals of America’s Got Talent in season 12 in 2017 but was eliminated shortly after getting an “X” from Simon Cowell.

Billy McFarland has admitted that he was “wrong” to go ahead with Fyre Festival in his first interview since being released from prison.
McFarland was at the centre of a high-profile scandal in which ticketholders were lured to a “luxury music festival” held on Pablo Escobar’s former private island in the Bahamas, with Blink-182, Migos and Disclosure booked to perform.
However, the event was a notorious disaster, collapsing in chaos after issues with food, security and accommodation arose. It was the subject of two documentaries that aired on Hulu and Netflix in 2019.
In 2018, McFarland – a repeated scammer – pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud. He was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay back 26m (£23m) to investors, but was released early in March 2022.
On Friday (4 November), McFarland made his return to our screens as he sat down with Good Morning America for his first TV appearance following his release.

For a second, it’s like 2005 has barged into the pub demanding respect. Richard Archer, singer with Staines’ indie rock massive Hard-Fi, arrives at a Thames-side Richmond boozer with his bright blue eyes flashing and the jaw-length hair he sported pre-pandemic shorn back to his classic indie bovver-boy cut. He’s as energised as he ever was when leading some of the most raucous gig scenes this writer saw that entire disrespected decade, when entire Academies would be bouncing right back to the (drunk dry) bar to clock-off clubland punk anthems “Hard To Beat” and “Living For The Weekend”. He was champion of the skint but shot-crazed, a roaring mouthpiece for the left-behind street stars of surveillance culture Britain.
The haircut is appropriate: it’s now 17 years since the band’s debut album Stars of CCTV ram-raided the UK charts, but Hard-Fi are undergoing a Semtex blast of popularity.
