Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired worldwide rights to Lance Kawas’ thriller Good Thief, also claiming North American rights to Sonny Mallhi’s Hurt and Phil Harding’s The Reunion. The Red Arrow Studios company will release the first title on Tvod and digital platforms on November 30, with the second debuting in select theaters and on internet, cable, and satellite platforms on December 10, and the third arriving on all Tvod and digital platforms in February.
Good Thief follows a pair of thieves (played by Peter Donahue and newcomer Shomari Giles) on the outskirts of Detroit who rob a neighborhood pawnbroker (Jimmy Doom) of his valuable baseball card collection, only to find out they’ve unleashed something far more sinister. Aaron Sizemore penned the script for the film, which also stars Melanie Mahanna and Bobby Laenen. Kawas produced with Hicham Benkirane’s company, Hbk F.C. Myriad Pictures is handling international sales.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
Warning: This article reveals critical plot plots from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
Of all the surprises seen in “Rogue One,” none was more unexpected — or more divisive — than the return of Grand Moff Tarkin, whose presence might have been less of a shock if actor Peter Cushing hadn’t died in 1994.
While this isn’t the first time that a movie has used technology to bring someone back from the grave, the prominence of Tarkin’s role in “Rogue One” has rekindled the debate over digitally manipulating deceased performers. For this week’s survey, we asked our panel of critics a question (or two...

The gym of the Hollywood United Methodist Church is dressed to the nines. Paper and foam fish hang from the ceiling. Blue and silver streamer curtains line the walls. A statue of Poseidon towers over tables strewn with punch bowls. About 100 people add a rainbow’s array of color to the gym with 1950s-era dresses and suits. But they’re not doing the hand jive or the bop – they’re busting out their ’80s moves as the band plays Whodini’s 1984 funk-rap song “Freaks Come Out At Night.” The scene is a nighttime shoot in mid-March 1985 on the set of “Back to the Future.” Harry Waters Jr., who played Marvin Berry, the leader of the band at the dance, recalled the surreal experience of jamming with contemporary songs in between takes for a gym full of extras in 30 years out-of-date clothes. “It was a party! It was entirely too much fun,...

When an actor can't reprise their role in a sequel, how do you fill the gap without the audience noticing? Here are a few solutions...
Filmmaking's a tricky business, and creative decisions are often informed by pesky details like conflicting schedules, retirement plans and pay disputes. So when studio executives give the greenlight to a film sequel, and an actor in a major role suddenly can't - or won't - appear, filmmakers often have to come up with some creative ideas to make sure their star's absence doesn't distract cinemagoers too much.
From recycling snippets of old stock footage to the strategic application of eye patches, here's a selection of the clever things directors, writers and producers have done to cover the absence of an actor in a sequel. And we start with an infamous case that prompted a fairly major change in...

Close calls in movie casting history always fascinate me. The possibility of some other actor inhabiting what has become the definitive version of that character in your head is mind boggling. The reasons why people turn down roles, especially in successful franchises, are especially confusing. Those last minute casting changes are heartbreaking at times, especially when you see the aftermath of events, and how the actor's careers were affected.
With all of the casting switch-ups there have been, we've decided to aim our sights at recasting in movie trilogies. We've broken it up by recasting of characters that took place during filming, between a film and its sequels, and before the actor began filming their part. We've also included a close call, and some honorable mentions, as well as rare some footage and photos. Enjoy!
During Filming:

The Comic-Con convention floor is filled with all kinds of cool, nerdy things this year (see our Preview Night gallery here for a taste), but there isn't much that tops an appearance from one of the original DeLoreans used in the Back to the Future franchise. Only a handful of these still actually exist, and we've been told that this particular one was used in Back to the Future III. All weekend long fans can sit in the DeLorean and get their picture taken (for $20), and all proceeds go towards Michael J. Fox's foundation for Parkinson's research. Some random faces from the franchise will be stopping by, too, including Claudia Wells (the original Jennifer), Jeffrey Weissman (the George McFly look-a-like replacement for parts 2 and 3), and Billy Zane (Biff Tough Number...

Actor Jeffrey Weissman got his big break auditioning for, but not being cast in War Games. Instead he caught the attention of a big agent and was soon cast in the Twilight Zone movie in the, "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet" story, with John Lithgow. He did small parts in Johnny Dangerously, Crackers with Sean Penn and Donald Sutherland and a few guest star spots on TV series like Dallas and Scarecrow and Mrs. King before landing a co-starring role opposite Clint Eastwood in Pale Rider. In a recent interview he told us, "It was a gas being on location with Clint. He was a real gentleman and did everything first class. It was a nice event."
After that came Back to the Future II. He played George McFly, Marty’s father, in the two sequels. He recalled what struck him most about making the film was the set decoration.

Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy Quick Thoughts: It's been 25 years since Back to the Future hit theaters and I was only eight years old when it did. Surprisingly, I can still vaguely remember how cool I thought it was and how amazed I was when Doc Brown's DeLorean flew directly into the screen at the very end. I was even enamored with Back to the Future Part II four years later and Part III was even better the following year. Of course, since that time I've grown up, but still, parts I and III remain personal favorites with the first one recently listed at #2 on my Top Ten Time Travel Movies list. However, the second one is almost unwatchable at this point for me. It just isn't a good movie. Thankfully the western aspect of Part III is so well done, with all of the characters from...

As Megan Fox ducks out of Transformers 3, what happened when other movie franchises and their personnel parted company?
With Megan Fox's departure from Transformers 3 currently making the news, we look at other actors and directors who have, for one reason or another, left a movie franchise. What happened next, for the franchise and for the person concerned?
Megan Fox - Transformers 3
Who?
A regular fixture in men's magazine listings of desirable women, 2007's Transformers gave Megan Fox her first lead role after several years of small television roles.
Why?
Fox's recent comments in Wonderland magazine can't have done her any favours. "He's like Napoleon and he wants to create this insane, infamous mad-man reputation," Fox said. "He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is."
While Fox has since claimed that she left the Transformers 3 production voluntarily, it's still widely thought that...

During the press junket for "Hot Tub Time Machine," actor Crispin Glover opened up about the problems he encountered on the "Back to the Future" set that caused him not to return. "On the DVD to the 'Back to the Future' trilogy, [co-writer, producer] Bob Gale has said something that's totally fabricated," said Glover. "He said I asked for twice the amount of money that Michael J. Fox asked for in the first film. In the negotiation for the second film, they offered me less than half of what any of the actors that were being asked to come back in the film . Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson. They had all done studio films, and they'd made a lot more money. I was being penalized." Negotiations fell apart and Glover didn't return for the rest of the trilogy. As a result the studio hired Jeffrey Weissman...

When adventurous treasure hunters Rick and Evelyn O'Connell return for their third film, this summer's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," one of them will look a bit different than they had previously. That's because Evelyn was once played by Rachel Weisz, who passed on this sequel and was replaced by Maria Bello. Likewise, the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Rachel Dawes from "Batman Begins" continues in this summer's "The Dark Knight," without Katie Holmes; Maggie Gyllenhaal fills in there.
It's a busy year for actors replacing other actors in sequels . we've already had a new Hulk (Edward Norton) and this fall, we'll have a new Punisher to match (Ray Stevenson) . so it's a good time to look back at some of the most notable substitutes. Sometimes new actors in old roles can make a huge impact; Antonio Banderas broke through with American audiences with "Desperado,...
