“Scandal” broke ground in 2012 when it launched on ABC starring Kerry Washington in the lead role of Washington, D.C. “fixer” Olivia Pope. Washington was the first African-American woman to star on a primetime network show in almost four decades. (She went on to be nominated for an Emmy for the role twice — first in 2013 and then again the following year.)
“She’s been a very three-dimensional, independent woman at a time when female characters really weren’t antiheroes,” series creator Shonda Rhimes says of Olivia Pope. “I hope that’s something that’s happened and now feels very normal and obvious — that female characters can be antiheroes — and [that] it feels normal and obvious that women of color can be leads of shows. …Hopefully that is something that the show has done.”
Washington herself notes that she has inhabited the role of Olivia longer than she has held any other title — including wife and mother.

The 1974 film “Foxy Brown” starring Pam Grier was a financial success, grossing $2.4 million on a $500,000 budget. At the time, the cult movie was recognized and praised for depicting a strong and powerful African-American woman. Now, per Deadline, a TV adaption of the classic is in development at Hulu with Meagan Good as the lead.
The project, executive produced by DeVon Franklin and Tony Krantz, will be written by “Empire” scribe Malcolm Spellman and Ben Watkins (“Burn Notice”). The original film followed Brown as she sought revenge against the man who murdered her boyfriend. The TV series is being reimagined as a modern version of the original Jack Hill-directed feature.
Good is also set to serve as producer, with Jason Weinberg, Evan Hainey and Drew Comins as executive producers. MGM TV is the studio.

While live-blogging the Oscars you really don't get too much of a chance to take in all the acceptance speeches. I catch a few moments here and there, and I can pretty much tell when the air is being let out of the room as well as those moments where someone is really capturing the moment. What I've put together below are the five speeches where I think the winner really managed to stand-out. I also love the true excitement coupled with the words chosen in these speeches. Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave, especially, seemed to capture the room with her infectious smile as much as Jennifer Lawrence a year before, not to forget her brother, Peter, who photobombed Ellen's Twitter-breaking selfie and is clearly someone very special in Lupita's life and she in his. In its opening scene, Canadian dramedy Good Dog directly references Curb Your Enthusiasm. Its lead character, neurotic TV producer George (Ken Finkleman), is planning an unnecessary trip to Los Angeles to get Larry David’s blessing to use the title “Embrace Your Enthusiasm” for a planned fly-on-the-wall series about his life. It feels like a move intended to undercut criticism that Good Dog‘s a “Canadian Curb“, but one that doesn’t work. If anything, it just draws additionally attention to the fact this is a poor man’s version of the Emmy-winning Curb, and possible the worst comedy pilot I’ve seen in years.
It doesn’t help that I had no idea who Ken Finkleman was, and therefore no opinion of him to subvert. He’s an award-winning writer-producer-actor, who created and starred in a hit Canadian TV series called The Newsroom in the ’90s, amongst other things,...

Maverick partner Guy Oseary has partnered with Untitled Entertainment to work as a manager for the management/production outfit headed by principals Jason Weinberg and Stephanie Simon. Oseary will continue as a partner with Madonna in Maverick Records and Maverick Films. The move toward management has grown out of a long-term friendship between Oseary and Weinberg, the duo said, and is a logical step in that Untitled has carved out a niche for representing crossover artists from music to feature film and television. Although an official announcement only mentions Oseary's partnership with Untitled, sources close to the deal said the arrangement may see Untitled move into Maverick's Beverly Hills office. Sources also indicted that announcements are forthcoming about A-list names with whom Oseary will be working.
Simon Baker has circled his way into The Ring 2 for DreamWorks and helmer Hideo Nakata. Shooting starts in mid-May on the sequel, with Baker set to play the male lead opposite Naomi Watts in the ongoing tale of a mysterious videotape that proves fatal to viewers. Although it will be the first time Baker and Watts have worked together, the two have been friends for years -- both call Australia home and share the same manager, Untitled Entertainment's Jason Weinberg. Baker's wife, Rebecca Rigg, also is best friends with Watts.
