One of the biggest concerns amongst web content creators is that branded entertainment will destroy artistic expression as product integration increasingly compromises story and vision. However, producer/directors Alex Johnson and Lance Weiler of the Workbook Project (Wbp) are attempting to do just the opposite with Radar, which premiered on yesterday on Babelgum. Radar, produced by Wbp Labs, is a weekly three-minute, made-for-mobile and web series that goes behind-the-scenes of innovative projects and events across different creative disciplines. Season Two highlights include episodes about the live art event Art Battles, 3D printing startup Makerbot/NYC Resistor, performance artists Undetermined Measurements and Mark Horowitz's Google Maps Road Trip. Johnson, a former interactive strategist at Adventure Pictures and advertising agency Deep Focus, is taking the lessons she learned there and using them to support and showcase cutting edge work. In the case of Radar, the brand is the art itself. Says Johnson, »

The following is our first report by Lance Weiler from Power to the Pixel. I've just arrived in London for the third annual digital innovation forum Power to the Pixel which consists of a conference, project pitch forum, day of workshops and a think thank. Tomorrow the conference phase of the event kicks off. I'll be taking part in each of the phases of the event. Starting tomorrow with a presentation on Story Architecture — a look how storytelling is evolving in the age of connected devices and the real-time web. I look forward to Power to the Pixel each year. It has quickly emerged as the premiere European destination for new models and all things transmedia. There is quite a bit of buzz about the prospect of delivering stories... »

As you may have read, Four-Eyed Monsters co-creator Arin Crumley has launched a new project, OpenIndie, that aims to create a new model for the distribution of independent film. I'll let Crumley explain it: As Crumley notes, OpenIndie is using Kickstarter to fundraise towards its goal of $10,000. With 17 days to go, OpenIndie needs just over $7,000. If you're intrigued after seeing the video, please consider heading over there and contributing. A $100 contribution gets you a one-hour consulting session with Crumley on the distribution of your own film. Also, check out this latest podcast from Lance Weiler and his "This Call is Being Recorded" series. It's with Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler, who talks about his new... »

Digital pioneer Lance Weiler joins the fray with a modest proposal for how the film industry should embrace innovation as it faces the digital future: Where the industry goes from here is going to require a rethinking of the infrastructure that supports it. To realistically move forward, innovation, experimentation and R&D is needed to help create an Open framework that will improve the funding, creation, distribution and discovery of truly independent … »

This weekend, as the Tribeca Film Festival rolled on just blocks away, I had the opportunity to moderate a panel for New York Film Academy producing students on the various challenges confronting film producers in a mid-recession, New Media environment. Hosted by SAG Indie and the Ifp, the panelists included Cinetic Rights Management's Matt Dentler, former CAA agent and current Hunting Lane Films partner Kevin Iwashina, and The House of the Devil producer Peter Phok. We were eventually joined by cross-platform impresario and Filmmaker Contributor Lance Weiler, who despite being held up in traffic for most of the proceedings, offered his inimitable perspectives on audience aggregation, alternative reality gaming and the impending demise of... »

Premiering on Babelgum today is a new doc web series, "Radar," created by a number of people familiar to readers of Filmmaker magazine. The Workbook Project's Lance Weiler, whose "Culture Hacker" column will begin appearing in the next issue of Filmmaker, produces, Alex Johnson directs, and the d.p. is Tom Quinn, one of our "25 new Faces" for his feature The New Year's Parade. The Workbook Projects Lab series looks at creators who are exploring new forms of storytelling in their work, and here's what the series' site says about the debut piece, "Next Door Neighbor": We all have a next-door neighbor and a next-door neighbor story. With this realization in mind - comic book artist, Harvey Pekar collaborator and founder of webcomix... »

Kudos to Noah Harlan for braving the tape-recorded audio wilds of the breakfast conversation I took part in at SXSW this past week. At the festival CinemaTech's Scott Kirsner gathered myself, Ted Hope, Lance Weiler, Brian Chirls, Liz Rosenthal, Brett Gaylor and Caitlin Boyle for a morning roundtable in which he asked us what had been on our mind while attending the festival. Each of us spoke for a few minutes and then there was a group discussion. As Harlan notes, the audio quality is poor, and I think an edited version, which I hope one of us can put together sometime in the near future, will be more useful than listening to the tape. Still, Harlan listened to the talk in its entirety and used it as the jumping-off point for a blog... »

Just after I posted a link to Lance Weiler's article in the current issue in which he discusses data portability and how filmmakers should not aggregate all their social networking content on third-party networks like Facebook, and a day or two before I post my interview with Tommy Pallotta on why he left the popular site comes a series of of postings online about Facebook's new Terms of Service policy. In a post titled "I'm Done with Facebook," Edward Champion writes, "I would advise any writers, artists, and photographers to remove their content posthaste, and not give Facebook the right to profit on your hard labor. Creative Commons and community is the solution. Not autocratic assignation of rights." Chris Walters at The Consumerist... »

While in Rotterdam for the festival I caught up with director and producer Tommy Pallotta, who recently a) finished a new doc, American Prince, that will premiere at SXSW next month; b) moved to Amsterdam where he is engaged to Femke Wolting of the cross-media production studio Submarine; and c) left Facebook. The first two life events, of course, are far more interesting than the third, but Pallotta's departure from the world of social networking is what we decided to talk about for the purposes of this short interview for the blog. As a director/producer, Pallotta has always explored the nexus between film, art, culture and new technologies (he is the producer of Lance Weiler's Him, the Arte France Cinema prizewinning film at this year's... »

Because our Winter, 2009 issue went up online during the Sundance Film Festival, I think some of what's in it has been slightly overlooked by the blogosphere. One article I want to point you towards is Lance Weiler's "Virtual Discovery." It looks at some of the ways that creators are building audiences by embracing collaborative models of marketing and even production. Weiler also discusses the »

Congratulations to filmmaker, new media creator, and Filmmaker contributor Lance Weiler, who was awarded the Arte France Cinrma prize here at this year's Rotterdam Cinemart. In his remarks when presenting the award, Arte's Michel Reilhac said that the award acknowledged the visionary nature of Weiler's project and noted that it speaks towards the type of new thinking about audience and »
