As a long time fan of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, I've always wanted to see a feature film adaptation of the comic. We've seen elements from the comic brought to life, but we've never seen a completely faithful live-action adaptation.
A fan and filmmaker by the name of Wyatt Weed has made his own film adaptation of the 1986 comic and it actually turned out pretty cool! Especially considering the fact that he made the film with only $2500 over the course of 24 days in a 17-month time span.
It's not perfect and it's a little rough around the edges, but taking what went into developing it into account, it's pretty solid.
Adapted from Issue #1 of Frank Miller's seminal 1986 comic series, filmmaker Wyatt Weed (“Shadowland,” “Four Color Eulogy”) offers his unofficial fan’s take on the Batman mythos. Following the death of Robin at the hands of the Joker,...

The Dark Knight Returns: An Epic Fan Film screens Monday, Nov. 7 at 9:30pm at The Tivoli Theater as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. Ticket information can be found Here. Inspired by Frank Miller’s seminal 1986 graphic novel, local filmmaker Wyatt Weed (“Shadowland,” “Four Color Eulogy”) offers his unofficial fan’s take on the Batman mythos. Following the death of Robin at the hands of the Joker, Bruce Wayne (Weed) hung up the cowl and cape 10 years ago. But now Gotham City is in the grip of a violent crime wave, and the venerable 55-year-old billionaire has decided that the time might be ripe for the Caped Crusader’s return. It will shown with Committed. In this DC Comics fan film from former St. Louisan Terry Ziegelman, the Joker and Harley Quinn take a time-out from battling Batman to explore their own issues in couple’s therapy.

Oscar bait performances by Reese Witherspoon, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Timothy Spall, a Tenacious Eats “Movies for Foodies” event, and a tribute to the St. Louis-born silent film star King Baggot are some of the many highlights of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. Cinema St. Louis announced the 2014 line-up today and it’s the usual hi-quality mix of independent films, foreign films, locally-made films, end-of-year studio awards product, and retro programming.

The St. Louis International Film Festival is in full swing, but if you’re already tired of preachy documentaries and reading subtitles, you have the chance to enjoy a good, old-fashioned vampire movie. The St. Louis-lensed thriller Shadowland will be screened For Free Sunday night, November 17th at 8:30pm. Writer/producer/director/special-effects artist/llama wrangler Wyatt Weed, along with co-producer Gayle Gallagher, will be on hand after the screening for a Q&A and will be selling DVD’s of the film (which I’m sure they’ll be glad to sign). The event happens at the St. Louis Mx Theater at 618 Washington Ave. (7th Street and Washington Avenue) in beautiful downtown St. Louis. With this years St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase, we’ve again proven that our city is packed with ridiculously talented filmmakers, actors, and other artisans.
The St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase, an annual presentation of the nonprofit Cinema St. Louis, serves as the area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. The Showcase screens works that were written, directed, edited, or produced by St. Louis natives or films with strong local ties. The various film programs that screened at the Tivoli from July 14-18, 2013 serve as the Showcase’s centerpiece. The programs ranged from full-length fiction features and documentaries to multi-film compilations of fiction and documentary shorts. Many programs included post-screening Q&As with filmmakers. Filmmakers of all ages within a 120 mile radius of St. Louis were strongly encouraged to submit their works, or at the very least attend the event to celebrate the amazingly talented St.

Review by Wyatt Weed, Pirate Pictures
Once again, the St. Louis International Film Festival is fast approaching. Primarily sponsored by Stella Artois and now in its 20th year, the fest has really established itself as one of the best around. It will hit multiple venues around the city beginning November 10th and continue through November 20th.
This is a call, a challenge to the local filmmakers out there: Get up, put on your shoes, and go see some of these films. You owe it to your fellow filmmakers and yourself as well, because the work is amazing.
As one of the volunteers involved in assembling the shorts programs, I have to tell you, the shorts I have seen thus far are nothing less than spectacular. This past summer’s Showcase of local talent featured some of the most technically proficient pieces I have ever seen, and this years’ Sliff is...

Shadowland is a unique film that, despite its tight indie budget, works. If Bram Stoker ever decided to write his novel, Dracula, from Lucy Westenra’s perspective, this film would be it.
In this movie, she is known as Laura (Caitlin McIntosh). She comes into vampyric existence trying to comprehend modern times. Some incident in the past has caused her to lose her voice, and McIntosh's ability to emote the better part of this film is part of this movie’s charm. Viewers soon figure out that she just wants to be left alone, but at what cost? Since she is a ‘mute,’ what she does to remember what happened to her life is a mystery that slowly unravels itself.
McIntosh does a superb job in expressing frustration and confusion without words. Just as equally noteworthy is the work writer,...

Shorts Program 8: Horror Shorts includes 8 individual short films of various styles, for a total running time of 95 minutes. Played consecutively, these films offer a broad and entertaining showcase for independent horror filmmakers in the St. Louis area.
The Cask Of Amontillado (13 minutes)
Directed by Hugo Fleming, The Cask Of Amontillado is a tale of revenge, based on the story by Edgar Allen Poe. Two men (Mark Bunch and Billy Benner), with their minds altered by the effects of Budweiser 40s, wander deep into a subterranean realm, whereas only would may ultimately return. The film is more of a operatic ode to Poe, that a traditional narrative film. The Cask Of Amontillado contains no dialogue, instead told entirely by the very words of Poe himself. Illustrated by a haunting piano and vocal score (Somewhere Under the Rainbow, written and performed by Heather Rice) that draws on the dark heart of Poe’s literary horror.

There are two notable horror films moving to DVD and Blu-Ray this week and one other, which is mostly known for softening the horror genre. Joshua Grannell's debut film, All About Evil releases today and this is an independent film, with many well known actors participating. Thomas Dekker will star with Natasha Lyonne and Cassandra Peterson aka Elvira. The film puts real life murders on the screen for fans to watch, until they are the next to die! Moving on to Shadowland, which is the first time this film has been seen by 28Dla, readers will find an independent and creative take on the vampire myth. Vampire hunter faces vampire in this production from Pirate Pictures. The last is The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - which releases later in the week (December 4th). This is The week to invest in a PS3 just so you can buy and download the fantastic Dead Nation exclusively on the Playstation Network. Trust us - it will be worth your while.
If you are not a gamer, this week's horror offerings are limited to some fangless bites with the latest installment of Twilight, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (and all its related merchandise), staking (ha!) out a Saturday release all by itself. There's also Vampires Suck, but the release party flash mob in Hollywood on November 30th sounds more interesting than the film itself.
Dead Nation (Video Game)
Available exclusively on the Playstation Network for $14.99, Dead Nation (Review) is said to be home to the "smartest zombies" to ever be placed in a video game, meaning that these baddies will perform surprise attacks, drop down on you from buildings, and even grab at you through fences. On top...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"The Fantasia Collection"
Released by Disney Home Entertainment
While the headliner of Disney's incredible group of releases on November 30th will be the four-disc Blu-ray double feature of "Fantasia" and "Fantasia 2000," it's what's less publicized that should be exciting to both Disneyphiles and film fans in general. Starting with the hi-def debut of the two "Fantasias," Disney will finally include amongst the films' copious special features (many ported over from the out-of-print DVD set) the 1946 Salvador Dali-Walt Disney collaboration "Destino," along with an 82-minute making-of documentary. And incidentally, Disney is also releasing three standalone documentaries that shouldn't be overlooked in "The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story" about the songsmiths behind the studio's most famous musicals like "Mary Poppins," "Walt & El Grupo," which details the company-shifting trip Walt Disney took with his animators to Latin America as part of the Good...

Very nice! Saint Louis’ own Shadowland, directed by Wyatt Weed, has a wicked awesome new poster… just in time for the film’s appearance at this year’s Chicago Comic Con Wizard World Convention, which runs August 19-22 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center (Rosemont). Shadowland will be playing on Saturday night at 8pm Cst at the Convention Center. Director Wyatt Weed — as well as stars Caitlin McIntosh, Jason Contini, and Carlos Antonio León — will be in attendance on Saturday.
Synopsis:
An old church in a modern North American city is undergoing a renovation. Construction equipment and piles of debris cover the grounds. A deep pit has been dug for new sewer pipes.
Night falls. A woman crawls from the pit. She is weak and covered with mud, her face beaten, her throat cut. She is unable to speak, remember who she is, or how she got there. This is Laura.

During last month’s 2010 Con-Tamination here in St. Louis, producer Gayle Gallagher took some time to talk to me while promoting her award-winning film Shadowland. Directed by Wyatt Weed, Shadowland is the vampire story of a woman with amnesia on the run from a mysterious bounty hunter who either wants to kill her for her crimes – or save her soul.
The movie had it’s theatrical release at the Tivoli Theatre last July. In the interview, Gallagher touched on the many local location shoots, the visual effects and the film’s interesting score.
Even Dee Wallace Stone (The Howling, E.T.) stopped by during the convention for a quick picture with one of the more lofty props from the film.
The film is still screening for audiences in the U.S. and other countries. Look for it at the upcoming Fright Night Film Festival on July 30th in Louisville, Ky. For...

It’s been said time and time again, and it bears repeating every so often, that if you’re a filmmaker working with a low budget, the best thing you can do is come up with inventive ideas. Ideas are free. It doesn’t cost a dime to create an original and engaging story. This is something writer/director Wyatt Weed has taken to heart and achieved with his first feature film, ‘Shadowland.’
Purely written for the screen, ‘Shadowland’ is among the best, original, vampire movies in recent memory. Told in non-linear fashion, it keeps the viewer enticed in its mysteries without ever force-feeding exposition or crossing over into boredom. The film is driven by plot and character, something Weed has no trouble in delivering ample amounts of.

Retro Dreams: Director Wyatt Weed ponders the state of film and how he got here. For most people, dreams don’t come true.
Sure, sometimes you marry your childhood sweetheart, or get the job that you really wanted, the one with the great benefits and the sense of security, but rarely does the childhood dream come true: astronaut, president, secret agent.
For me, the dream has come true – and it is an amazing experience to be aware of it as it happens.
When I was 5, man landed on the moon. I was enthralled, and subsequently committed to being an astronaut for at least the next 6 years – until I saw a movie called “Jaws”, that is. Jaws made me aware of movie making and movie magic, but what I gravitated toward was oceanography. I was obsessed with the study of sharks for at least the next two years of my young life.

Ok, I know you vampire fans can be a fanatic lot, so this list is sure to upset some of you, but this is My list. I can’t be wrong – you know why? Because it’s my list! Seriously, please comment and debate, and maybe we’ll all end up seeing some movies we haven’t seen before.
Wyatt Weed’s Top Ten Vampire Films 1. Interview with the Vampire (1994)
In my opinion the most well produced, adapted, and directed of all vampire films. Great source material, serious treatment of the subject, fine direction and acting. And it didn’t cost $100 million to make.
2. Blade (1998)
If “Interview” is the yin, “Blade” is the yang – action packed, stylish, great characters, and a believable, emotional new take on the old vampire clichés.
3. Dracula [aka: 'Horror of Dracula'] (1958)
This is the first and still one of the best of legendary Hammer Studios’ vampire films of the 50’s and 60’s.

FX Makeup Artist, Rachel Rieckenberg will be in attendance at the ‘Shadowland’ Screenings on Friday, July 24 and Thursday, July 30 to talk about FX Makeup and answer any questions you may have.
Rachel is a graduate of the Blasco School of Makeup and has quite the extensive portfolio on her MySpace page, she worked with Director Wyatt Weed to come up with the look of the vampires in Shadowland (who have four upper fangs instead of the typical two), as well as the cuts, bruises and scars on the actors in the film. Rachel will be at the 7:15 and the 9:40 shows on Friday July 24 and Thursday, July 30. (buy tickets here)...

Are you an aspiring filmmaker? If not, do you know someone who is? If so, you may see one of their films during the St. Louis Filmmaker’s Showcase. If not, you’ll still see plenty of great feature and short films during this 9th annual love affair with local filmmaking. On that note, even if you just simply love great movies, this is still a wonderful event to patronize.
The Ninth Annual Slfs will be held July 18-23, 2009. This event focuses exclusively on the work of local directors and filmmakers, as well as expatriates with strong local connections who have gone on to use their creative talents in other cities. Tickets are on sale now!

Back in November of 2008, I saw a film called ‘Shadowland’ at the Saint Louis International Film Festival (Sliff). ‘Shadowland’ is a fresh take on the classic vampire story, written and directed by Wyatt Weed and starring Caitlin McIntosh and Jason Contini.
The cool thing about this poster is that it highlights the romantic element of the film as well as the more traditional Gothic influence on the vampire story. ‘Shadowland’ will be playing at the Tivoli Theatre during the Saint Louis Showcase series from July 24 through July 31, 2009.
