Exclusive: HBO Films is developing Gorbachev, a movie about former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev from Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone. Gorbachev serves as a consultant on the project, which captures the dissolution of the Ussr through his eyes. Gorbachev was the first and last President of the Soviet Union, serving from 1988 until the union’s dissolution in 1991. He ushered democracy into the Soviet block by introducing glasnost and perestroika and helped end the Cold War. The movie, written by former Hell On Wheels showrunner John Shiban and executive produced by DiCaprio, Jennifer Killoran, Hanks, Goetzman and Industry Entertainment’s Keith Addis, stems from DiCaprio’s relationship with Gorbachev. The two met when the Russian Nobel Peace Prize winner appeared in DiCaprio’s environmental movie The 11th Hour. Gorbachev later presented the actor with an environmental award at the Cinema for Peace Gala in Berlin.

It had been a while since I last offered a full-fledged Oscar prediction update and in the time between I have seen Flight, Wreck-It Ralph, Lincoln and Hitchcock. So yesterday I went through the current standings and the only topline category I didn't change was Best Supporting Actress where the race is really going to come down to what kind of performance Anne Hathaway gives in Les Miserables. There is a chance Samantha Barks or even Amanda Seyfried may be able to make a case coming out of Les Mis and I'm not going to count Kerry Washington (Django Unchained) out entirely or Frances McDormand (Promised Land), though those all seem like longshots compared to what I've seen so far and the reactions to those performances. That said, what I've put together below is a list of the standings as I see them right now with a few comments where I felt necessary.

Daniel Day-Lewis in LincolnPhoto: Dreamworks Pictures Well, one of the major unknown features of the awards season has been seen and the response is largely positive in many of the right places. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln screened last night as the not-so-surprise screening at the New York Film Festival and plenty of praise has been placed on the film, Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role and lots of love for Tommy Lee Jones who is said to "steal the picture". It should be mentioned the film was said to be an unfinished cut so some trimming may still take place (though it has already been rated PG-13 by the MPAA so changes seem unlikely), but reactions had folks referring to it as a "rock solid monument to Abe", "heavy and heady" and "the best film Roberto Rossellini never made. Also one of the best Spielberg did make." Tony Kushner's...

These are two categories I always have a hard time with considering I don't read scripts before seeing a movie, wanting to go into each and every one of them knowing as little as possible, and I rarely read them after the fact. So what am I basing my opinion on? Gut instinct, buzz around the net, history and anything I can possibly glean from watching the films themselves. To be honest, I don't think the voters are doing anything all that different. While studios do tend to make virtually every single screenplay up for consideration available to read (which I will make available again this year as I have in previous years), I don't read many of them, though I will browse through them on occasion as I did with the screenplay for Martha Marcy May Marlene last year, which drummed up a healthy amount of conversation. I wonder,...
