Keeping the Mood Light at The Lovely Bones Premiere

3 December 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Susan Sarandon, Christian Ashdale, Peter Jackson, and Saoirse Ronan at The Lovely Bones premiere in New York City, on December 3, 2009. Photographs by PatrickMcMullan.com. “I didn’t even recognize you!” Susan Sarandon said to an Alexander Wang-clad Saoirse Ronan last night before the lights dimmed at the New York City premiere of the film The Lovely Bones. In the movie, which is based on Alice Sebold’s 2002 novel of the same name, Ronan, 15, plays Susie Salmon, who is murdered in 1974 and watches from heaven as her family tries to track down her killer. Sarandon plays Susie’s booze-bag grandma who helps the Salmon family cope with the tragedy. “It’s great as a young actress to get to be in the company of such great actors who have been around for a very long time and who are extremely comfortable on set,” Ronan said of her Oscar-winning co-stars Sarandon and Rachel Weisz, »

Look Sharp

13 November 2009 5:30 AM, PST | Interview Magazine | See recent Interview Magazine news »

Today marks the DVD release of the penultimate season of Jag (that's Judge Advocate General, for the uninitiated). For ten seasons, CBS chronicled the impeccably styled David James Elliott, Catherine Bell, Patrick Labyorteaux, John M. Jackson, Karri Turner as they loved, argued, pined, and applied the stipulations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and international law. Canceled in 2005, it is the only television show thus far to have been officially endorsed by the Department of Defense, the United States Navy, and the United States Marine Corps. As a tribute to this fallen hero, we studied the Spring 2010 runways for signs of its influence. Below, some looks from Alexander Wang, Loewe, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Rag & Bone suitable for conducting a court-martial. »

What’s the Point of Fashion Week?

16 September 2009 8:50 AM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

The front row at the Marc Jacobs show, on September 14, 2009. From PatrickMcMullan.com. You don’t need to be well versed in Veblen to be wary of Fashion Week. The tents, the after-parties, the introduction of the terms “majorness” (it means really great!) and “jegging” (it’s a jean legging!) all seem—now more than ever—like the exertions of a tragically decadent culture reassuring itself that everything’s fine, we’re all still fabulous. Back in the day (pre-1993, to be exact, which marked the first official New York Fashion Week), buyers and editors would come to a designer’s showroom, look at the designs and patterns, place their orders, and go get a glass of white wine somewhere. Now it’s become a media spectacle, with a month’s worth of advance press and previews, 3,000 registered attendees, more celebrity sightings than Oscar night, and fashion editors and stylists »

New York City Still Knows How to Party

14 September 2009 3:29 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Courtney Love performing at the Alexander Wang party. From PatrickMcMullan.com. At first it looked as if the Fashion Week party scene was going to be dull and duller. That's definitely not been the case. Buckle up, kids, it was one very wild weekend—and the Marc Jacobs party (we've heard reports of people offering cash to get on the guest list) hasn't even happened yet. »

Fashion Weekend Bursts With Starlets, Famous Fashion Faces!

13 September 2009 11:52 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

New York Fashion Week didn't slow down over the weekend, and the front rows were star-studded gearing up for last night's big event, the VMAs. Lindsay Lohan ducked into Alice + Olivia and Shenae Grimes, Blake Lively, and Rachel Zoe all scored spots at the Diane von Furstenberg show on Sunday. Mischa stepped out for the Herve Leger show as well as to attend an event for The Beautiful Life. Rachel McAdams sat alongside Anna Wintour at Alexander Wang and posed with Leighton Meester backstage at Altuzarra. With so many big events taking place in New York, the fashionista stars were all over. Hilary Duff and Amanda Bynes were front and center for the Herve Leger show, which is no big surprise considering how often they, especially Amanda, are seen wearing the ubiquitous bandage dresses. Kirsten Dunst mixed things up at Band of Outsiders, while Hayden Christensen was out without his fiance Rachel Bilson at Lacoste. »

Are Celebrity Fashion Lines Here to Stay?

5 August 2009 3:19 PM, PDT | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Seventh Avenue Starlets. Erin Wasson, Hillary Duff, Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen, and Amber Valletta. From PatrickMcMullan.com. Last month, Diane von Furstenberg, president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, announced the 2009 inductees to the fashion organization. Among the talented 31 designers were Alexander Wang, Maria Pinto, the Olsen twins, and Jason Wu. One of these things is not like the others, huh? The official recognition of the Olsen twins as fashion designers is a milestone in the celebrity brand movement, and comes at a time when everyone from industry pundits to Women’s Wear Daily have been forecasting the downfall of the celebrity genre. The pint-sized duo were at first reluctant to admit their involvement in The Row, a pricey line of tailored basics, and called their relationship to Elizabeth and James, a trendy, more accessible line of clothing and accessories, a “licensing” deal. In interviews, both women »
